When you have guns, why use a sword?

It's because everything in RPGs is measured by stats, even out of battle, for example you never see the big tank of a guy running up walls but the agile one will
Every attack takes off a number based on weapon strength, character strength and target defence, if the character is using a good broadsword and the enemy a bad pistol, likely the case, the pistol would take of damage before you got close enough but you're so strong that you can bop him a few times because he's weak....

I guess it makes sense for each weapon type to have it's own strengths and weaknesses a sword won't have range but will be accurate, strong, easy to defend with and a gun will have range and strength but accuracy related to target distance and it's kinda impossible to defend with, adding in that in fantasy you can dodge bullets easily with enough skill, I think that might explain lol

Because using guns in RPG combat is boring. Thats just me though, combat is just so boring and lame when guns come into play aside from very specific circumstances.

Pretty much: Swords are fun and cool, guns are lame and carry no tension.

Bringing a knife to a gunfight is indeed suicide unless we're talking extreme close quarters ambushes.

However, the thing about games, films, and other media is that they're realms of the imagination where we can change the state of reality to circumvent the boring mundane facts of life and substitute awesome.

In a game like Dawn of War 2 the chainsword and other such melee weapons tend to be able to do more damage because of things such as being powered like a power axe or having a really, really sharp blade like a chainsword. A bolter doesn't have the penetrating power of the chainsword (unless special ammo is used). That and when you engage and enemy in melee it can mean he's not as likely to use his big guns for fear of taking out his own men.

blades are scarier then guns. and if the enemies are going to politely wait for you to walk over and attack then why not use the weapon you are best with.

The idea is that their bodies are highly resilient to all forms of "Small" damage. A bullet is small, while a sword slash is big.

Seriously, that's usually the logic behind it. To see this phenomenon in non-JRPG's, see Devil May Cry, in which it actually makes sense, what with the constantly healing Demon's, Devils, and such.

Because in Jrpgs (pronounced jer-puh-juhs) guns don't fire bullets. They actually shoot tiny swords, hence why the do less damage. Bigger sword more damage.
I have to say, despite the fact that I groaned at your pronounciation insistence.. I laughed whole heartedly at the rest of that.

A sword is cooler than a gun.

It also requires actual, you know, skill to use a sword.
Way before PCs and consoles were invented, this is what the warrior nerds would flame war over, guns and swords.

because in an RPG, it's all about the stats. Some weapons bring stats but we'll not go in to that. If an Attack Power: 100 sword with a HP char of 100 fights an AP: 20 Gun with a HP char of 20, then the sword will win.

I'm pretty sure it was more like who had to play Cleric in DnD.

Guns jam, swords won't but they will go blunt yet even then it is still a block of metal, I suppose.

I've played MW2, hitting with a gun at certain ranges against a fast moving knife user can be hard, then there is the deadly reloading.

Of course, some sword users are cooler, some gun users are cooler. Now, unarmed is where it is truly at.

Because swinging a gun won't cut someone in half unless it's a gun-blade.
Fun fact: When soldiers got stuck on barbed wire in front of machine gun nests in WW2, the gunners used their gun to cut the body out of the way.
