It's because everything in RPGs is measured by stats, even out of battle, for example you never see the big tank of a guy running up walls but the agile one will
Every attack takes off a number based on weapon strength, character strength and target defence, if the character is using a good broadsword and the enemy a bad pistol, likely the case, the pistol would take of damage before you got close enough but you're so strong that you can bop him a few times because he's weak....
I guess it makes sense for each weapon type to have it's own strengths and weaknesses a sword won't have range but will be accurate, strong, easy to defend with and a gun will have range and strength but accuracy related to target distance and it's kinda impossible to defend with, adding in that in fantasy you can dodge bullets easily with enough skill, I think that might explain lol
