Where do games need to progress most this decade?

Less focus on hardware. (Personally I can't wait for the motion sensor crap to blow over.)

And indeed more focus on AI and story. That's pretty much it, there are a few other gripes I have with the industry but I can live with those.

Imo colour needs to improve a little. I am getting tired of the brown and grey, and also for some reason I don't really like bloom either (though maybe that's just me). I would be very happy if this could be achieved while attaining 'realistic graphics'.

Gameplay-wise, really, good gameplay has existed for years, I don't think it's a matter of improving, or progressing, but rather finding new mechanics. Obviously the only thing that can improve then, is good controls and less bugs.

ALso, I guess AI needs work, but I generally don't mind cheating AI, can potentially give the game more challenge than it normally would have.

What we need to see in the next decade (if we want better games), is more developer time, less release date pressure/rush. Give the developers time and they will make not only a better game, but a game WITH LESS BUGS.

less corporatism

more time
This right here. So many good games have failed because they were either rushed for E3 and or the holiday system. Also these "yearly" deadlines are killing creative freedom and time for proper testing.

If the industry can stop with this motion controlled bullshit I'll be happy.
This because they're focusing way too much on this as a killer ap / end all be all type of thing. Most of the times the games never live up to the hype and or are not that fun in the long term.

Probably not the first to say this, but game devs/publishers need to stop using the internet as a crutch. I am sock of half finished games being released safe in the knowledge if people complain enough there is the option to patch it later.

In England recent changes in consumer law mean people have the right to take back PS3 versions of Fallout: New Vegas and COD: Black Ops due to them being not fit for purpose.

Speaking as a console gamer for me the two things the last decade will be remembered for is online gaming and 3D open worlds. I realise there were open world games on consoles before 2000 but nothing of the scale or success of GTA 3-IV or more recently Fallout 3.

Also the rise and fall of music games (guitar hero/rock band).

One last thought, quality of sound/surround sound (although this may just be me not having had half decent equipment in the past).

EIDT: I know it is fashionable to be rather po faced and claim graphics don't matter, but I look forward to graphics improving.
