Death, we fear, because it is unknown, but death also makes us think, Should we live a pios life? Should we be altruistic? We have been told all of our lives that we should, so some great plainof eterna happiness hits us, or we will wake up as another being. But, in my opinion, I say that due to no sensory input, and no brain to provide conciousness, ourselves as we know it, through our eyes, go into complete nothingness, with nothing to see, so there would be no colour, black is a colour, so you wouldn't see black either, you would see no colour. No sound, sso it wouldn't sound like an echoey cave, no smell, no perception, at all.

You wouldn't even know you were dead, your brain wouldn't function, you'd have no memory, no anything. The closest thing I have to compare is a dreamless sleep, that fits most of the criteria, and in the end, jhust sleeping without dreams forever isn't that bad, is it??

I too have been thinking of what it would be like to not exist. I've had my wisdom teeth removed recently and was put under so I could fall asleep to not feel the pain. When I fell asleep it seemed as if only a second passed while I saw black (there was no dream). When I woke up I found out later that I was asleep for about an hour. It got me to think about nothingness. Its really hard for me to think about since I am alive and cannot think into nothingness. Like you said there is no color (even white) or sound, or anything. I feel as if it would be horrible to sleep forever without dreams, it sounds downright scary. (Probably why they made religion) I think that everything that has a life and conscious goes somewhere when they die.

You go to Cthulu, who tortures you forever.

His one tenet is: don't die. You broke it, so he tortures you forever. Makes perfect sense :)

OT: You rot in the ground.

some highscore maybe

but since there's so much to reach and so many different options in "life" I don't think it'll be a top score. slightly above average probably.

As long as I reached some of my personal goals in the end and had fun on my way, I'll cheerful welcome the game over. In the meantime I'm just collecting XP everywhere.

but hell yeah, I'm so curious to see the credits

To me, I honestly feel like either literally nothing will happen. You're gone. You feel, hear, see, nothing.

You're died.

That or it could be like a dream like state or maybe sleeping.

Pittsburgh..? [footnote]Cookies for people who get the reference[/footnote]

I think that since we lose our physical body, we go to a sort of mental existence. A higher existence. I mean... If we just thought nothing else, we would already not remember it since when we died, we would have forgotten everything and this very instance would not be possible to comprehend.

I do hope I get to see my family when I'm dead and they are.

Meeting Hades in age or passion, I plan to wait for those I leave behind in Elysium. Most likely though, they will be there while I sit in Tartarus.

all pseudo-poetic allusions to Olympianism aside though, I simply do not have any idea of what will occur after my death. I would like to think that there is an afterlife, but I am not sure even of that.

Seeing as how all that one was dissipates starting at the point of death onward(if not a little sooner for some folks), one moves on in every direction. Little things such as bacteria, scavengers and organ donation just help one get there(which is to say everywhere) a little faster.

Well, Calvin and Hobbes said "Pittsburgh".

*Looks around*

I guess I'll never know if I'm really dead or not.

Well there's the usual, but that's just ceremony for the body which is just an empty shell by that point. Aside from that, nothing. We're born, we live, we die. Nothing lasts forever, and frankly when it comes to life, I wouldn't want it to.

A hole in the ground.

Or maybe a vase on the mantle over your kid's fireplace if you're into that kind of thing.

Everyone knows when you die you get sent to the recycling bin, and from that point you can get restored or emptied. If you get empty you better hope the great user doesn't defrag the disk. Assuming we live in the matrix.

Either Calvin and Hobbes or South Park. Forgot which.

Anyways, my answer is simply this. Same place I was before I was born.

Not to push my current state of depression onto anyone else.
But i've been having misconceptions about death recently.
What do all you educated members of the Escapist think happens when one "moves on"?
Please don't use this thread as some kind of vessel to push religious views onto others.
Just except everyone else's opinions.
i know where im going when i die....in a coffin *drum roll*

ok seriously though...
im pretty sure that when you die (IMO) a chemical release happens in your brain and your perception of real world time slows down to the point its practically stopped...then you go where you tell your mind to...so everything that happens in your own little world you controll because its your little world not a premade one
Now thats something I think would be very cool and now I hope that is what does happen when you die.

We fall into a dark, empty place.
We feel nothing, we hear nothing, we see nothing.
We were there before we came to be.
We will be there when we end.
