Where is the line?

Mostly just curious about "The Escapist" in general, but out of all the other websites I've noticed, the moderators here are probably some of the strictest ever when it comes to what is and isn't ok to post. That being said, I like that.

On gamefaqs or other places, you'll see people reply with "LOL" or "FAG NOOB" but if you were to just reply with that here, you might get a suspension or probation. I guess it's because the moderators want to create a more intelligent internet forum than the average game site.

That being said, where is the line drawn? If you were to go to the extreme, and say start a forum with random letters and say something along the lines of the aforementioned quotes, then you'll probably get a probation and the topic will be deleted. But, is there really no such thing as a stupid question here, or are there certain questions that if asked will earn you a probation?

Ultimately, this is a "where is the line drawn?" question, and I'd like people to try and come up with creative examples of things that would get you suspended. For fun, I guess.

(Saying something general like "Shouting random racial slurs" would be fine, but typing specific slurs wouldn't be a good idea. So, I guess I'm looking for very general ideas that WON'T get anyone banned if talked about, but in general context... Yeah.)

there's a line?

frankly you can get banned for almost anything, it just needs to be reported and be in breach of a minor rule (at least that's how it seems from my experience)

it's like mafia bosses getting taken in on tax dodging etc rather than murder

if you piss people off in the past, and you make a wrong move later on they'll get you on whatever they can

that makes it sound like the mods are out to get you though... maybe they are... maybe they're behind you right now... bet you wish you hadn't used all those capital letters and italics now, don't you...

If you aren't a total jackass, you will probably avoid moderator action. Trust me, I've had a couple of people get on a vendetta against me for an apparent wrong I did them, but since I was never rude or insulting, the mods never did anything against me.

Pretty much what they said, although you might wanna read "The banhammer and you", it covers a good 85% of the basics of not getting in trouble here.

You'll know when you cross it.

Which begs the question: if you have not crossed it, is there actually a line at all?

Well i post profanity all the time, they dont seem to mind, since we all use dirty words and the youngsters are probably even worse hehe

But i think no racial hate or direct hate and profanity id say,and always smile to seem brighter :p
How fitting that this person was suspended. Just look at his guilty post, for a good example of what not to do.
I guess they started to care about him posting profanity.

Things used to be stricter, but a recent surge in new members combined with a lack of reporting lead to alot of stuff slipping through the cracks.

When it comes to not crossing the line, all you really need is a glance at the Forum Guidlines (and/or Lord Krunk's The Banhammer and You) and a bit of common sense.

This and the posting guidelines themselves are pretty good

I'm not sure exactly where the line is but when you cross it... *shudders* You can never come back :O

I also know that the mods frown upon people who leave comments such as 'FIRST!' on newly made threads.

Why do websites censor out swearing and let such phrases as "LOL WUT" and "PWNED U NOOB" go untouched? Cursing is even more sophisticated then that.

The Escapist Posting ProTip #1:

When a news story is posted about how some kid was driven to murder by videogames...

DO NOT ASK IF THE VICTIM DROPPED GOOD LOOT.

I've seen quite a few bans for this very poor joke.

Lucky for you you got the Neo badge before you incurred modwrath.
