I haven't played in years, but I still follow the Space Wolves even getting their new codex just for the new fluff. I just love their space vikingness. They're double hard space marines who (unlike the other chapters) don't take things like threats from Inquisitors too seriously and are actually loved by the masses of normal humans.

For the Wolftime!

With the announced release of a Warhammer 40.000 MMO, the upcoming "Space Marine" 3rd person action game, and the success of the Dawn of War franchise, I thought it'd be interesting to see which race has the most love from the gaming crowd.

It doesn't matter if you play the tabletop wargame, the computer games, or if you just like the background, throw in your opinion, and let us know who you love and why.

My choice is the Imperium. It's very hard for me to select a specific branch within the Imperium, as it has been my faction of choice for nearly two decades. Since I started playing in 1992, I played with Blood Angels, and I still have them today, but the Imperial Guard, an army I started in the early 2000's, has gained my love and respect due to some stellar performances on the tabletop. I even have an aquila tattoo!

But ultimately I have to go with the faction that started it all for me. The Blood Angels. I absolutely love their background. A chapter that idolizes physical perfection and aesthetics, but which suffers from an internal flaw bigger than even some Traitor Chapters. The Red Thirst, that psychic echo of Sanguinius' brutal death which reduces a Blood Angel to a blood-craving beast.

Their recent retcon upon the re-release of Space Hulk was retarted (95% of the chapter died fighting the Tyranids?! And no-one knew that until now... uh...), but the just-released COdex brings them back to their former glory, and then some.

So, yeah. I'm a Son of Sanguinius first, and a Guardsman second. Be that as it may, my choice is the Imperium.
Finally someone that is a Blood Angel!

OT: Space Marines; Blood Angels. Feel my Chainsword Heretic!

Tau. With Fire Warriors, Battlesuits, Hammerheads and The Greater Good as their philosphy and reason for fighting they are the coolest Faction in WH 40K.
I also like the multicultural aspect of the Tau, the fact that they are the only faction that is capable of even considering alliances and integrating other races in their army (unlike the other Racist, Xenophobic, Religoiusly Fanatic, Conservative, Exterminist, and Bloodthirsty races in 40K).

Imperial Guard, they take on the massive demons, hordes of Orks or Tyrranids that the Space Marines are too important to fight, armed with flashlights and leftovers.

Eldar.
While they're overlooked, or at least in this thread, I absolutely adore the Seer Council. They'd rip apart infantry.

Of course, W40k wasn't an infantry game, really. It was a vehicle one, and it made me sad to see such elite forces ripped apart by Land Raiders |:

the imperial guard make the most interesting reading for sure, ghosts series is probably the best in the black library. and space marines are balls out cool I played them table-top and DoW (always felt like cheating tbh, esp with the grey knights).
but if I had to side with a faction it would be as part of the Ordo Malleus inquistor

Inquisitor Lord Hephaestos Grudd, addressing Colonel Molian of the 223rd Gudrunrite Rifles
"Look upon this hammer I hold before me, for it is far more than a weapon. It is a symbol of the Imperial justice that smites the diabolic enemies of the Imperium wherever they are found, just as I. Though it has banished even a mighty Greater Daemon to the hell from which it was spawned, it remains true and pure, just as I. Furthermore, it is a symbol of my order and my office, of the authority granted to me by the divine will of the Emperor. By that authority, I am commanding you and your entire regiment to obey me without question or hesitation. Advance, or it will not be daemonic blood that stains my hammer this day."

Holy crap, I just started this game about half an hour ago.

So far, I've played Space Marines... I used to play it a while ago, can't remember much but I think I liked the Eldar.

In the DoW games, I've preferred Orks, Spehss Marines, and Tyranids. However, I've only played Space Marines on the tabletop, and they're awesome (exploding rounds of killer-death :D).

Imperial Guard. They're the men, thats all. Just men and rifles and tanks. It's kindof uplifting to see their pure human spirit put standard men and rifles and tanks up there with super-advanced aliens and necron warriors etc.
Oh, and Baneblade :)

+yay me, I figured out how to tag something as a spoiler, all by myself XD

Imperial Guard!

Who cannot squeal with joy when faced with quotes like:

"No spreading out, no fancy stuff, just smash through. Let's see how those degenerate sophisticates handle a healthy dose of pure unreasoning violence."

"Give me a gun, a google-eyed alien to shoot it at, and I?ll die a happy man."

"Hold Fast!"

"They're killing us!"

"So kill them back!"

"Your foe is well equipped, well-trained, battle-hardened. He believes his gods are on his side. Let him believe what he will. We have the tanks on ours."

Chaos.
"Your Slavery to the False Emporer ends today!"

'Course, there are Space Marine quotes aplenty. Almost enough to bring my traitorous butt back over.
Almost.
"Death or healing, I care not which you seek."
It sounds a bit more heretical than it acutally is.

Soon though...Soon...I shall start my Daemons army. Nurgle/Tzeentch sounds like a lot of fun.

'Cept, Chaos get those explody death rounds too. And horrid mutations depending on your god to boot.

"Those I cannot crush with words I will crush with the tanks of the Imperial Guard!" - Lord Solar Macharius

The Imperial Guard have always been my favourite army. I like the sheer firepower they can output, and the idea of normal humans facing off against huge alien terrors and eldrich abominations with nothing but rifles, flak vests and sheer grit and determination.

[small]And maybe a Baneblade or two...[/small]

Meh... Videogame-Warhammer doesn't work for me. I like modeling and painting my miniatures, then playing the tactical game face-to-face with people for a much better social experience^^. And teh only MMO i really liked ever is Fallen Earth oO. I don't enjoy RTS a lot...

And ANYTHING ELSE THAN SPACE MARINES! I'M SICK OF THEM!

I have always been a staunch supporter of the Iron Warriors. Great backstory and a good niche too. Stuck with them through thick and thin. I could even paint them! I also liked the fact that they had a legitimate reason for loosing it and falling to chaos. I also made a kick ass vindicator/leman russ hybrid which suited them down to the ground.

Iron within. Iron without!
what was their reason again?

I remember all of the others just not them....

oh BTW i would side with the Necrons or the Tau simply because i collect an army of both of them.
It was the fact that they were used time and again as cannon fodder to take down the toughest enemy strongholds with no acknowledgement of their efforts and sacrifices while the Imperial Fists swaggered around with clean shiny armour and perfumed hair with everyone singing their praises and admiring their fake tans and designer handbags....

Bitter? Me?
