It might or might not be strange, but when I first played the game I didn't actually know I was supposed to see Sheik as a guy. It doesn't actually show a lot of him obviously and there were no other glaring indicators to my pre/newly pubescent mind. I do remember having an advanced reading level and being able to actually appreciate the beautiful scenes in which Sheik was in, and still get a little choked up during them.
