I love how I can win almost any kind of 'worst [blank] in a game' thread with one simple word.

Drakenguard.

If you understand, then you understand. If you don't, then consider yourself lucky. *shudder*
Oh Gawd. That.
It's almost as bad as Dirge, but there is one, and only one thing it has going for it:
The rotating/morphing storyline is actually a pretty cool and ambitious concept.
Now...the actual execution...oh...it hurts to even think about.

...Still not as much as Dirge of Cerberus though. That game started with no ambition and sunk to depths that NOBODY was expecting. It was literally like someone's incredibly terrible fanfiction was taken in as part of some contest and used as the plot to a B-list fan-exploitation game.

Wait, is that TWO Squeenix titles I'm comparing? Oh fuck me I feel depressed all of a sudden.
No, Drakengard is a Cavia title. Square Enix just published it.

And I heard the storyline was really good for Drakengard. I didn't play it all the way through, but if it's anything like NieR then it's pretty damn fantastic.

Sonic 06.

Twice as confusing as Inception while being as stupid as 10,000 BC and as badly written as the Power Rangers.

Gears of War 2. the plot makes sense for a while, but about halfway into it they begin throwing in half baked plot elements. it gave me the idea that the story was written by 5-6 different people, then the pages were scrambled together.
the reason I say this over another, worse game is that it wa good going in, but ruined itself in the middle, and the ending was a letdown, as another half baked plot element was introduced
Ohh I forgot about Gears of War 2, to me most of the plot was "What the hell is that?!" "what's going on!?" "Mariaaaa WAAAHHH!!"
"DAMMIT! I LOST HER AGAIN!"
Line of the year all years. I laughed so hard when he said that after plowing through some badass locust bad guys in the game, following that by plowing through some locust bad guys in the cutscene before being ambushed by RANDOM MELODRAMA.

Serious Sam. Monsters attack, you kill monsters, some stupidity, more monsters, random levels in an order which makes no sense.
Still the most fun mindless shooter since Doom and Doom II.

Bad Company 2 - On top of it being incredibly dull and unengaging, but I was incredibly disappointed when the huge mechanical roar turned out to be....well, that. I mean, really? I know we're going for gritty realism here, but I would have been so stoked if it had turned out to be some enormous, tsunami-causing cyborg dinosaur thing. I mean, I know MW2's story was ridiculous, but at least it was entertaining.

Fallout 3, I love the game, but if there are two things I have to beat the game over the head for, they are: too many fucking subway tunnels, and a very unoriginal story.
While New Vegas may not have had an incredible story, it was at least more original.
heyyyy I liked the story but I've definitely agree with you about the subway tunnels.....*urgh*

OT: I can't think of to many games (that I've played anyway) that have had bad stories but from what I've seen and heard Modern Warefare 2's was utterly ridiculous

Believe it or not, the story actually fell apart at the end. It was pretty interesting and above average until then, and you didn't have to read the datalogs if you knew what the shitty lingo meant.

I actually haven't found a game with a bad enough story that it would make me hate it, call me easily impressed, but I prefer gameplay mechanics over story...But for the sake of the forum the game I least liked was Manhunt, that story and gameplay was just so bad I didn't even bother finishing the first level.

I'd say Alien Swarm... but come on, it was free, which also eliminates Duty Calls, so I'm going to say JUST CAUSE 2. Don't get me wrong, this is a 4 and a half star game, but the story is terrible, costing it that half star.

Fable, hands down.
Not necessarily for out-right badness, but just the fact that it reads like a checklist for every overused fantasy RPG cliche there is.
Young child suffers family-slaughtering trauma? Check.
Child possesses inherited super-human awesomeness? Check.
The Big Bad is a creepy dude in a mask? Check.
Blah Blah Blah, hoh hee hoh? Check.
It's not even bad enough to get a cheap guffaw out of. The tidal wave of mediocrity just washes in from the first moment and you end up treading bland water whilst also trying to get the stupid fucking target system to target the asshole I want to throw lightning at, no not the merchant I'm escorting, the Fucking Band - oh screw it.
And yet, I still play the damned thing just for the chance to murder hundreds upon hundreds of my fellow man.

Ha! I agree.
In the terms of modern warfare 2, It doesn't have much of a real good story. instead it just expects you to shot guys, move on, shot some more guys, hold out for a bit, move on again then get killed.

And duchacked, i literally laughed out loud when you reminded me of that.

Custer's Revenge. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custer%27s_Revenge]

4 pages, and nobody has mentioned it yet? Seriously escapists, is our memory so shallow?

Halo isn't that bad, CoD isn't that bad, cliched crap isn't that bad, JRPG games aren't convoluted enough to be that bad.

I mean, the only game I can think of that might be on that level is Rapelay.

... the story was one of the best parts of the halo series imo, the only thing that killed it for me was the length of the games

Porn games are cheating. That's like bringing up Uwe Boll or Martin Lawrence-in-a-fat-suit movies up in "worst movie" discussions; well of course those are terrible!
Agreed, but rape games are far worse than games about pornography. I didn't mention Leisure Suit Larry or some such, because games about sex, have their story driven around... well sex. That's not necessarily a "bad" thing.

Games based on rape, though are different, and Custer's Revenge is also horribly racist. I mean, you wouldn't say that any sex game is as bad a game as that would you? I'm trying to dredge the worst of the worst.

No ok seriously, Modern Warfare 2. I usually don't have problems following game stories, but that one was incomprehensible and stupid.

Damn. How could I forget the pinnacle of terrible game storytelling, Half-Life 2? It was so bad people had to create massive web sites to make up the story. Not fanfiction mind you, but the actual story.

*holds the riot shield tight*
I'm seriously hoping that was sarcasm.

As for the timeline of Homefront (a game in which I've no particular interest), it doesn't sound that idiotic to me. I mean, sure, it's not all that believable, but so's most of human history anyway.

You want a similar but utterly baffling scenario? Try the Red Alert series. Awesome games (first two anyway), but the story's ludicrous.
In the first, Stalin grows super-powerful and invades Europe, because Albert Einstein travelled back in time and removed Hitler.
And then in the second, psychic devices shut down US defenses, and a fleet of red zeppelins and DOLPHINS invade.

Jolly good fun, but it wouldn't make a very good novel. No wait, hang on...
