If aliens did know about us and were capable of easily traveling the stars, why the hell would they stop by OUR planet and talk? That's like any one of us stopping by an ant hill and trying to talk to them.

We're a tiny race who can't get past our own religious views and xenophobia, why would ANYONE visit?
Didn't scientists go crazy when they found out that Mars had some tiny frozen bacteria in a lake somewhere? Or maybe it was when scientists found out that Mars once had water and strongly suggested that bacteria or some teeny tiny thingy had lived there at some point.
If the Aliens are smart enough to not only create a telescope of some sort that can see our planet from theirs and a spaceship powerful enough to reach our planet, is it that much of a stretch to assume they don't give a crap about our xenophobic ways and would be just as excited about the prospect of talking to intelligent life from another planet as we would be.

Even if we had contact, no government would -ever- admit it unless the evidence was overwhelming enough, that keeping the secret would be pointless." Individuals are smart, people are stupid." Yeah, Men in black quote right there. But it's so true

Whatever, we'll still have Prothean technology and mass relays in a few years so it doesn't really make a difference.

I'm pretty sure the only way people will ever, truly believe that there are no aliens on Earth is if aliens came to Earth and said, "Look, we're not here. Deal with it."
Oh, wait...

Actually, I do get the feeling that a couple of centuries from now, it's going to be us making life miserable for other species while robbing them of their resources. We *are* extremely talented at that.
Would not surprise me in the least. It depends on relative levels of technological advancement, but if we're in an advantageous position, you damn well better believe we'll kick out the natives and take it for ourselves.

If aliens were capable of coming to Earth, and they actually came here, it would be for one of two reasons. First, to conquer and claim our resources for their own or two, to make contact. Either way, it would not be a secret visitation. It would be extremely public and somewhat reminiscent of Independence Day before they started using their big beam o' death.

The only extra-terrestrial threat we have to worry about is that of an extremely un-intelligent comet or asteroid crashing into the earth in a massive impact event that would be like a billion Hiroshima bombs going off at once. It could wipe out 99% of all species on the planet in minutes, humanity would be wiped out with likely only a few thousands surviving out of 7 billion.

What we could do to avert this? Prepare for this? I don't know.

The point is such an impact is far more likely than being visited my any people in space-ships, especially if there really is not way to ever go faster than the speed of light.

I still think Science Fiction is wrong in making humans the technologically weakest race in most scenarios. Sure, it always plays to the narrative tension but on the real scale of things, I don't think that out ability to wipe out a pretty big planet and its seven billion inhabitants (that's us) a couple thousand times over speaks for our peacefulness and especially modesty when it comes to weapons technology. I'd even go so far as to claim that our weapons technology (including things like delivery mechanisms for nuclear weapons) is several decades ahead of many areas of civil technology (especially less well-observes areas in for example medical research).

So yeah, we are definitely the Klingons.

Suppose you're right about the possibility of them being very aggressive but I like to think that they'd be nice (since what kind of advanced form of life would brutally murder other intelligent life forms for resources, slavery or slight differences in cultures... uh, wait).
Although I do agree with you about the whole thing being very public. Scientists would see it coming, the media would find out and be swarming it in mere moments and groups of people would be taking pics and recording videos of aliens before the government could say "swamp gas".
Barack Obama and the White House are hiding nothing from us (relating to aliens having landed on Earth).

Or maybe they like to watch humans like we children like to watch ants? Or my favorite answer aliens come for voyeurism, aliens love human porn.

If aliens do exist, and they possess the technology to traverse the distance between stars, galaxies, dimensions or even universes, then why oh why do they still have to shove a hose up someone's arsehole to get medical data? Hell, even we humans have the "camera pill" colonoscopy now. Surely they could whip out a tricorder and just scan us without all the invasive anal spelunking.

"given the distances involved."

But we have the spacecraft Technology to Amplify Gravity, and close any two points in the universe and make the distance 0.

Interesting, how they state this, like we are fools to the obvious. We know the truth and will shall steal it and expose it to humanity!

The fact that they had to write this down mean that there is barely any intelligent life here, either.

Why would they even bother to respond to such a silly petition?
Highly suspicious!

I mean, if I get a petition going, asking the White House to clarify if there are Witches or not, will it get the same attention?

Th fact that they even had to issue that statement says a lot of not so good things about people's gullibility and superstitions.
only 17'000 signed a zero-commitment petition

When it comes to a lot of people doing dumb things we have far more worrying examples:
-twilight
-creationism
-justin bieber
-transformers movies
-other popular things that i think suck
