Seriously? The fact that Light does the things he does is entirely what leads to his downfall. It's his own arrogance that's to blame for his eventual defeat. The best way to do things would have been to do everything the same until L showed up. Then, stop using the Death Note completely, hide it, and spend as much time and effort as possible to find out what L's true identity is. Then, kill L with the notebook, and carry on killing criminals as normal. If Near had then turned up, rinse and repeat. Same for Mello. Light's arrogance in continuing to use the Note under L's nose was what made L so suspicious of him, and doing the same thing with Near later just sent everything crashing down around him. Otherwise Near wouldn't have even had a suspect to begin with...
Anyway, when watching it, I wasn't really rooting for anyone, I was simply reveling in the battle of wits and strategy between the two opponents. It's almost like a chess game, when you think about it...
