Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden.

He stares down vampire elders, defeats demons, has killed several Fallen Angels, one time raised a 65 million year old T-Rex from the dead to act as his steed (Harry named it Sue), has enough magic to bring forth every single ghost of humans killed by a coven of vampires within a mansion. And let's not forget that Harry kills a Black Court vampire with a laser-guided frozen turkey dropped from an airplane passing overhead. Also, Harry summons the Lord of the Wild Hunt, a fae on par with the Farie Queens themselves, and binds him. Harry also managed to drive a loup-garou (a kind of werewolf) off with a phenomenally powerful telekinetic blast that hurled it through three buildings.

Ender is smart a bit too much of a crybaby for my liking. I'd have to go with The Dixie Flatline from Neuromancer. Hiro Protagonist from Snow Crash. Zaphod Beeblebrox and Ford tied for the Hitchhikers Guide. And as already mentioned, the Saint of Killers for sheer bloody mindness (the scene with the angel of death and the devil is brilliant..).

Belgarath from David Edding's first 5 Belgariad books.
Aw, I loved those books. My favourite character was probably Garion, purely for the epic dungeon quote.

"I wonder how he'd like it if I threw him in the dungeon!"..."Do I have a dungeon? We'll improvise."

Damn, he was awesome. If were going William Gibson characters though, Automatic Jack from Burning Chrome is also pretty cool, as is Berry Rydell. And the Cuban/Chinese kid from Spook Country. Hell, most of Gibson's characters are awesome.

I'll go for Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye. Just a typical teenager really who hates the world around him, but has quite a bit of fun bull-shittin' people along the way.

Otto Skorzeny from Harry Turtledove's "Worldwar" alternate history series. The aliens were terrified of him!

I also like Zabulon from the "Night Watch" series.

The most awesome book character I have come across is Drizzt from Forgotten Realms. He has the maddest fighting skills ever. Plus, it's nigh impossible to kill him.

What about you? Find your opinions, and tell them to me.
Bah. Artemis pwns Drizzt. XD

Tyrion Lannister has to be one of my favorite characters from ANYWHERE.

EDIT: Sandor Clegane is worth a mention as well...even though
He's dead.

Popular Literature: Gandalf the Grey. "YOU SHALL NOT PASS, *****!"

Self-promotion: Dr. Vashpir (the 'H' is silent) from Into the Mountains. He strangles a guy to death using his spine as a garrote wire. HIS OWN SPINE.

Jeremy Ridgecliff from the Carson Ryder series.

Really, I recommend checking out J.A. Kerley's books out. If you're into crime-suspense drama, he's the guy for you. Good, mature reads. Loved them. I bought one of his books one day because I wanted something to do on holiday, I got so into it that I bought the others.

Rorschach from Watchmen. He is the definition of badass.
Not that I don't love watchmen (Understatement, I REALLY LOVE WATCHMEN. Caps illustrate my point here), but I don't think it's a book, really. More a graphic novel.
OT:
I think the best book character ever was Sherlock Holmes. Just a great character, I don't know why. Probably because he had very human flaws. In the Adventure of the Dying Detective, he was going mildly insane.
My second favourite would have to be Count Dracula. CHARISMA.

Leto the 2nd from god emporer of dune

he is a 15 year boy, with gentically iherited memories of all of his ancestors. who takes on the golden path (which paul, his father, never had the testicular consitution to under take) by converting himself into a half-worm and destroying all remaining spice producing worms so he is the only supply of current and future spice, thus he gains complete control of all the factions in the atradies imperium. he wryly uses this control to guide the genetic, pycological and cultural evolution of humantity for over 3000 year.

how awasome is that!
