Aewyre from Filipe Faria's "Chronicles of Allaryia". If ever you get ahold of a translation from this portuguese writer, don't hesitate, buy it. He's from Christopher Paolini's generation of Tolkien like writers, but way better. He's a bloody brilliant High Fantasy writer *.*

Lief (or Leif, cant remember spelling) from Deltora Quest
Darren Shan as himself
Seconded

Also some characters by David Gemmell

Druss the Legend - Legend, The First Chronicals of Druss the Legend, The Legend of Deathwalker(Is a brutal Axe weilding Warrior)

Jon Shannow - The Bloodstone series (Hes like Ray Mc Call off of Call of Juarez dealing death with a six shooter and a bible :)

Banokles One Ear - Troy series

Jaim Grymauch - Rigante series (3rd book, Ravenheart)

If you haven't read anything by David Gemmell I highly recommend him as a Heroic Fantasy writer.

James Barris from A scanner Darkly. He's just stupid in a smart way.

And the Tyler Durden of course.

Rorschach from Watchmen. He is the definition of badass.
Very true, He doesn't compromise, he just does things.

V From V For vendetta is also another choice, He's the equivalent of a british altair. Climbig buildings, assassinating important people with a hidden blade and covering most of himself and his face. Apparently the comic was written in such a way so that you could conclude yourself whether V was blowing up things and killing people for a cause or whether he's just insane.

- Brom from the Eragon books.
Keep in mind that if you only saw the movie version of Eragon, you missed out on alot. In the books, Brom is actually a talented swordsman and mage, who sacrificed the love of his life and his best friend for the sake of civilization. The definition of a hero done right.
Brom is awesome.

And I was going to say Alfred

Very meek but rose to the challenge when it mattered
Alfred is cool too. I loves the Death Gate Cycle.

Try Paul Atreides. Or if you want to go graphic novels The Saint of Killers.
Paul Atreides was a fat pussy. All he did after Dune was ***** about the jyhad HE created to milk a couple more childless years of humping Chaini out of the timeline. "Billions dead, in my name!" That was like every other one of his lines in Dune Messiah. Then he pussed out on the Golden Path so that his son would have to do it. Some badass, making his baby boy put on the fish suit and go crazy for a few millienium.

You want a bad ass, get Gurney Halleck, or at least Duncan Idaho.
Pretty much why I never read past the first book.

damn that's hard, so to make easier I'll state my top five

in no particular order

*Skua September- a character from Alan Dean Foster's commonwealth series; a giant of a man, with prematurely white hair, a thousand ways to kill you, and a sense of humor under fire that puts John McClane to shame

*Brian Duffy- the main character in the Drawing of the Dark (look it up, it's one of the best entertaining reads nobody has ever heard of): a drunken Irish Landsknecht, who spends much of his time kicking ass and getting shitfaced then kicking more ass, also he is the reincarnation of king Aurthur

*Bean- from the Ender's series, wickedly intelligent, and "badass-itude" in much higher degrees than even Ender could hope to achieve

*Drizz't- of course who couldn't mention him, though he does get waaaaaaaay to soft later on

*Elric of Melnebone'- not the most heroic or epic of the lot, but none the less fairly awesome; soul-sucking sword and all

"comic-book" characters don't really count as book characters

Roland, The Last Gunslinger, from The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
He's kind of like a knight, except he has 2 revolvers instead a sword, and a bit less chivalry.

After that, Duncan Idaho, he's pretty awesome.

Eisenhorn or Ravenor, both awesome
I like Eisenhorn more as a character, but I think Ravenor is better written.
While both are cool, I thought that Zygmunt Molotch was the best. He walks into the bar and thinks of 10 ways to take down the planet and 3 ways to take down the sector. Awesome.

Matrim Cauthain from the Wheel of Time series is pretty awesome too. Got the fighting skills and tons of luck.
