Shigeru from the Tales of the Otori series.

He dies in the first book, but his actions before his death paved the way for the unification of the region. That takes some serious mental acrobatics, not to mention spot-on foresight.

Well, since enough people have already said Rorschach, I will instead opt for Snape off of that 'Arry Potta!

Avoiding graphic novels and the Bible, Artemis Fowl. Hey, if you can do all that stuff just by being freaking smart, I give you props.

I've said this before, I'll happily say it again.
Skulduggery Pleasant.
Take a skeleton, put it in a suit, throw in some funny and add a pinch of detective and you get someone of pure awesome.

The "Dancer", a professional hitman/master-of-disguise in Jeffery Deaver's The Coffin Dancer
Mark Jessy, the protagonist from Rob Kean's The Pledge
John Rainbird, the shoe-collecting Native American hitman from Stephen King's Firestarter

...but most importantly:

Ciaphas. Motherfucking. Cain.

There are so many awesome characters from books...how can I chose just one?

I really like DEATH. He's great. And Sam Vimes. Both from Discworld.

I like Jon Snow from Song of Fire and Ice series. Although, Cersei is delightfully insane.

Always had a soft spot for Lirael from The Old Kingdom trilogy. Her development as a character was great.

The Marquis de Carabas from Neverwhere...

Too many great characters to pick just one.

Seconded, he's fucking epic. Although I found I connected more with Book, up until... you know.

And I have to say Al Giordino takes second place. Thanks to Sahara, now I picture Dirk Pitt as Matthew Mcconaughey. Which makes me sad; he can't act for shit.
