@ SlasherX: I assume you mean Alucard, the main character of Hellsing. If so; you are dead right (though he only counts if this thread counts manga as books, though it could be argued that they're a type of comic book).

I've also got to agree with those who said Ciaphas Cain, Harry Dresden and Shane 'Scarecrow' Schofield. For my own addition to the thread; I have to say Geralt of Rivia.

Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect of the Hitchhiker's Guide.
Death of Discworld is alright too.
And Mat Cauthon from the Wheel of Time series.

I think Kyon is awesome in how he is able to deal with all the crazy things that start to happen to him in Melancholy.

Qiwi Lin-Lisolet, Ezn Vihn, and Sherenkar Underhill from A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge.

There is no better hard sci-fi novel out there. None.

The most awesome book character I have come across is Drizzt from Forgotten Realms. He has the maddest fighting skills ever. Plus, it's nigh impossible to kill him.

Rorschach from Watchmen. He is the definition of badass.

Tyler Durden from Fight Club.
I'm in hell...

Try Paul Atreides. Or if you want to go graphic novels The Saint of Killers.
Paul is pretty badass but I liked General Agamemnon.

I started out as a Drizzt fan, but over the years, I came to realize that being the biggest, most unstoppable badass on the block is kinda cheesy. He doesn't ever really lose, and that kinda loses its charm after a couple story arcs. It's like Salvatore is too in love with his own creation to let anything truly bad happen to him.

Having said that, I'm gonna go with Roland from Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series. That dude has got some problems, and King isn't afraid to jack him up. Hell, he loses use of his shooting hand partway through the series. Let's see Drizzt get anything more than a temporary flesh wound.

Also, as far as dark elves go, I'm kinda partial to Phaeraun Mizzrym from the "War of the Spider Queen" series. A brilliant, ambitious mage who managed to survive until faced with a friggin' god. In a battle between him and Drizzt, I'd put my money on Phaeraun any day.
