Avoiding graphic novels and the Bible, Artemis Fowl. Hey, if you can do all that stuff just by being freaking smart, I give you props.
I agree, He caught a thing that could do just about anything with magic with only him, his smarts, and his butler. Butler is more badass though in that book

Almost any character from the His Dark Materials trilogy THE BOOKS not that crappy film cover, I guess Iorek Byrnisen stands out because he's a giant polar bear in bullet proof armour, what more could you possibly need?

Also special mention goes to Cain from the Old Testiment since he provided the inspiration for the character of Kain from the Command and Conquer series, who, i think, is one the the best characters in any game ever.

All of you seem to forget the two captains: Ahab and Nemo. They were some of my favorite characters, especially Captain Nemo. Even though he was only a captain of a submarine, he was still in one of the greatest books in history.

Samwise Gamgee, i'm sorry but that lad is epicly good. When he takes the ring off frodo, then gives it straight back when they meet up again, after frodo spends half the book being a whiney ***** about it. :D props to sam, imo.

Matrim "Mat" Cauthon from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books. I wouldn't call the dude a badass but he definitely has a unique persona. But yea; Drizzt Do'Urden runs a very close second.
