Who still plays Star Wars Galaxies?

I used to play this game when it first came out. Quit just before the first mechanical vehicles appeared. I had grown bored with the game so i gave my stuff away, found a newbie on Tattoine(sp?) gav hime all my equioment including: Camo trench coats for any environment he mite have expierenced. Bone and Ubese armor and the best long range rifles money could buy at the time. Oh yeah, lots of spice and smuggler buffs.

Anyway i recently looked at some "Let's Plays" and the official website to see how far the game has come. I was wondering if its worth resubscribing too or if it even still has a fan base. I would also like to know how the space combat is it looks awesome. How is it?

P.S.: I have really bad grammar I'm sorry.

For God's sake, why WOULD I still play it, when half the game concepts I joined it for have been eliminated entirely?

Also: no one who manages to screw up Star Wars space combat, especially by turning it into a GRINDFEST, deserves my money.

Wow, is it really that bad now?

The Space Expansion was the last chance I gave SWG to get its act together. And on the first day, I shot down over 200 enemy fighters. Yawning the entire time, because even in my slow and unwieldy craft, it was a matter of slight course corrections and holding down "fire" to kill them one after another. All of this was necessary to "tier up" in order to qualify for better fighters. You would also collect debris from your kills to slightly improve various functions of your craft, but all of that was pointless anyways since kills were effortless to begin with.

And as soon as I realized I was just, ARGH, grinding, I said to hell with it.

Compounding my anger was the fact that, as a Veteran player, I was given a BEAUTIFUL --- and ultimately, utterly useless --- space yacht.

See, I'd originally conceived of setting up a spacegoing gambling casino. You know, like the old riverboats: you're going to Dantooine anyways, why not go there in style and carouse on the way? With a wide open and spacious lower deck, fully-glassed side panels with a resultingly gorgeous view of the galaxy, and an upper deck overlooking the lower, I figured I could have the lower deck set up with four or five "common" tables and the high deck for VIP high-rollers. There was enough room on top of that for a dance troupe and a bar, plus the forward cockpit was enclosed and internally lockable.

And then SOE outlawed in-game gambling.

So let's see: I can be a lame pilot with no need for skills to get kills, or a smuggler who, um, doesn't SMUGGLE anything, or a Bothan Politician with a Political Mastery tree that was not only nerfed but actually eliminated in terms of any functionality --- see where this is going?

Also, as soon as the Holocron Quests made Jedis a playable class, they overran the place. Literally every third player seemed to have a lightsaber, and the Empire generally couldn't care less until someone decided to lop off a Stormtrooper noggin.

SWG is a Star Wars theme park where you experience "content", not a "Galactic Civil War". Or at least it was when I quit, long long ago.

I never really tried the space expansion pack, so I can't really comment on that.

I did play pre-CU and I had immense amounts of fun. It might be the nostalgia having an influence on me, but really, I thought the game was great, being a Teras Kasi/Bounty Hunter and hunting Jedi. Also, met an all Danish guild, with some great people, which probably helped give me a great experience.

All of this however, is the pre-CU experience, I remember dreading the changes as soon as I found out what it really was about. It changed the game entirely, I only played for 2-3 days after it came out, and after that I quit. I might not have given it a fair chance, but it wasn't for me and from what I've heard, I was correct in quitting at the time I did.

I'm still amazed at how much they fucked up that game, if they would just revert to pre-CU/never implemented the CU, I would probably come back now. So yea, my advice is don't go back, it's not the same as when you stopped, and entirely different game.

Here's to hoping that TOR will be great, I miss a good Star Wars MMO.

I played through Pre-CU, CU and the NGE... How the mighty have fallen. SWG did one of the best skill systems I've ever seen in an MMO, this was removed, replaced with a WoW-wannabe system, bugs, broken quests and idiocy.

It's sad really, and ToR is not looking any better.

And I miss the community... I remember one New Year's eve, before SOE started pulling these stupid in-game "celebrations", were everyone was running around, setting off fireworks, partying. Twas great.

Fuck SWG, utterly ruined by NGE

All hail SWGEmu. Though I haven't played that for months, I'm still hoping it'll finish during my lifetime...

I joined after the Combat upgrade and loved it, but hated it after the NGE.
Jumped on a weeks free trial a while back and found that my old toon was still active, played for about an hour before uninstalling it. Seemed totally dead, massively buggy and laggy, and just generally no fun at all.

Another one here hoping for TOR to be something special, but its in biowares hands, so it will be!!

SWG was always terrible from the moment it was released, because they released it before it was finished. I was in the beta and it was clear that there was nothing to do in the game. All warnings that the game wasn't ready were ignored, release dates have to be met. The whole system of getting missions from NPC's was disasterously bugged and the grinding was horrible. Maybe it's just me but standing in a swamp kiling bats for hours to gain experience isn't my idea of fun. And turn based combat is stupid.

SWG basically put me off all MMORPG's with turn based combat. Which is almost all of them.

The servers are still up? I thought it had been abandoned ages ago. I mean if APB went down in about a month I'd figure tha SWG would be out for the count by now. I didn't really play it that much (tried it at a friend once). I was going to get it, but then I heard that there were changes in the game that alot of fans were not happy with. So I just went with WoW instead. Which is a bit of a shame, because from what I heard originally SWG was more interesting than just "grind, grind, grind, move to next area, grind, grind, grind..." (I know that there is more to WoW than that, the main reason I played it for so long was due to PvP, it was much more fun than the PvE I had encountered so far).
