I dislike it be 'cause of the whole "EVERYBODY JUST DIED-whoops, no they didn't" thing that they pulled. At least in the manga.

Because it killed One Piece. Toonami kept Naruto and canceled One Piece because people watched Naruto more :(

I'm starting to notice a trend in these forums... People are start to post way too many "Y U NO LIKE X?"... People dislike stuff... some people like chocolate, some people like beer, some people like wine, etc. Some people hate that stuff... some are more outspoken then others...

The thing is... Who cares what everybody hates? Just get over it... Some people are xbox fanboys, some are ps3 fanboys, some are cod fanboys, some are moh fanboys, etc... It's the internet! People will always ***** about what they dislike... Even more on the internet...

That's life... Deal with it...

EDIT: I don't really watch anime so I don't really know that much on the subject... But naruto looks like the justin bieber of anime... If he's supposed to be a ninja then there's something really wrong with the definition. But, again... I don't really know what I'm talking about so I'm supposed to be impartial...

The format just does not work well in an animated show (it works far better in the Manga), there is inteirly too much exposistion and the action is stretched out way too long. It's the DBZ effect turned to 11 - I watched an episode where Naruto spends the entire episode chasing some flying ninja who throws explosives back at him. He tries a thing and that doesn't work. He tries another thing and that doesn't work. To be countinued next episode.

This was the second episode in which he has been fighting this enemy.

It works far better in the Manga because in the manga things are usually resolved in a few issues, and the inward monologing characters have can be rationalized away as a 'time freeze' or 'simultanious events', whereas in an Anime thats just not possible.

Also the formulaic nature of combat in Naruto - try something try something try something HAH I FOOLED YOU THE WHOLE TIME I WAS ACTUALLY DOING THIS MNIGHT TWIST! does not work well for Animated.

The exception of course is anything with Rock Lee/Rock Lee being drunk, because Rock Lee doesn't HAVE long windy strategies or powered up Ninjitsu, he just punches people hella good.

Note that this isn't just a Naruto thing, this is endemic from Shonen in general, largely because they are all adapted from manga which requires exposition to tell the audience whats going on. Someone above mentioned Rurouni Kenshin and this is absolutly true.

What is badass in print will not be badass in animation if you do a DIRECT TRANSLATION.

Kishimoto has NOTHING to do with the Naruto anime, NOTHING, at most the anime production team will ask him to do character design for movie original charactes.

Kishimoto creates a manga which Studio Pierrot then adapts into an anime, which makes Studio Pierrot no money directly only through the associated merchanising i.e Video games, toys, posters etc does Studio Pierrot get profit just like with all daytime tv anime.
looks like i gave them too much credit. apparently they're just bad at their jobs.

i apologize to Kishimoto.

Good series end. Bad series drag on and get milked, essentially turning into a DBZ clone.

Good series: Outlaw Star. 26 Episodes. Any more and there would have been filler.

Good Series: Cowboy Bebop. Again, 26 episodes. The entire series was itself, nothing but filler, only 4 or 5 of the episodes actually having anything to do with an actual story.

Good Series: Rurouni Kenshin. 95 episodes. It ended up dragging on, but they did it in a graceful way, ending the series when it needed to be end, before things got bad.

Bad Series: Naruto. 220 Episodes. I will say, the first and most of the second season were good. I used to enjoy it alot. In fact, im sure if i dig through my closet i can find a headband or two. But it drags on and on and on and on. And its still going. WHY? Why must you still keep going?

Bad Series: Full Metal Alchemist. 111 Episodes. Again, at first, it was a great anime. I liked it for about the first 30 or so episodes. But then they decide, lets tank the series with another 21 episodes, full of massive plot holes you can fly a Gundam through. But that wasnt enough. Then, they wonder how they can milk its fame more. OH! I know! Lets redo the entire series a little more true to the story this time, but make it drag on for an additional 13 episodes, bringing its total to 64. A combined 111 episodes, half of which you already watched, because you saw the first series.

Theres a difference between a "Bad Anime" and a "Bad series". Look at Star Wars. The first 3 made were a Master Piece of cinema. The following 3, which were a prequel to the first 3, were pretty bad. The series itself was bad, because 3 really bad movies are involved in it.

Naruto is by no means a Bad Anime. And i dont hate it. I hate where it went.

I don't like Naruto mostly because it's story and characters are either cliche or badly flawed.

I HATE Naruto in the abstract because of how much popular it is in America compared to the far superior One Piece. But then again, Bleach is also more popular than One Piece, too, and it's also been going downhill too, so whatever.
Bleach maybe in the US, but One Piece is more popular then the both worldwide.

Because it just isn't that good, and sadly, yes, it IS over hyped. I don't really hate on things to excess, especially since when Naruto came out, I watched it religiously I'll admit, but that show has come to represent for me a negative in anime. Its so freaking popular, and its just second rate anime (IMO) that is the most popular manga in the USA somehow, when I read/watch stuff so much better consistently (again, IMO but I could easily gather supporting agreements). The premise I originally thought was cool just slowly was stretched to thin over time. I stopped watching after the Naruto/Sasuke (thats spelled wrong probably, I know) battle at the waterfall before sasuke basically goes all darkside on the ninjas. Why? Because like a couple people said above:

Naruto in anime's COD.

the vast majority watch it, and are exposed to almost no other classic or new up and coming shows, or just skim the surface of the wealth of material available. Its a second rate title that all the more devoted fans of anime see favored by people who are hardly anime fans at all, but have etched their way into the anime community because of naruto. And naruto is a cliche of sooooo much of anime and japanese culture, to the point that its almost a parody. Ninjas, ninjas, ninjas! and not even an interesting portrayal! these guys aren't ninjas. not once to they do any subtle sneaking, assassination work, or infiltration and stealth, but instead have face to face battles with flashy powers that drag on for multiple episodes longer than necessary with needless amounts of backstory that begs us to give a shit about every character we meet, and its just not that interesting after a while when the pacing is so stretched over a continually tense moment! (dbz suffered from the prolonged battle and poor pacing, also.)
It just not. that. good. If you like it, fine, I don't judge, but it has the COD stigma of being a shallow experience representative of a broad and deep area of entertainment. also, from what I hear, recent manga developments have been shit, according to my friends who read. Leaf village gone? they kill over done Pain villain yet?

Theres a thousand other titles that deserve naruto's level of attention to detail in the anime or popularity. like Berserk or Gantz perhaps.

I don't hate Naruto. Well sort of... >>

I hate parts of it. :p. It's very inconsistent... I loved the Chunin exams. I loved the battle with the sound 4. Just about every Akatsuki fight kicked ass as well. However, the series has many more bad story bits as well. Like when they find Tsunade, The Genin training bit, filler arch, and finding that stupid turtle... as some examples.

Also, I hate Sasuke and Naruto. Most of the other characters are pretty interesting though.

Just watching somebody play the PS2 game, and it's sort of..faggy. Not in the homophobic sense, more the medical, as Seanbaby would say.

okay, just have to say, like hell are the first 3 star wars "master pieces on cinema". bull. the empire was defeated by fucking teddy bears. episode 6 was a god awful thing in the second half. 4 was great for a quirky space opera, 5 pretty damn good too. after that, wheres the war in star wars? it became all about Anakin and Padmae's woefully uninteresting romance and the jedi.

yeah, george lucas doesn't so much write as he does vomit from a pen. had to let it be known.

the way you take it it would be like taking a child from its parents because the general public doesn't believe they'll do a good enough job as parents - think about it, if you created something, something you thought could be spectacular, wouldn't you want your hands doing the direction instead of someone who couldn't possibly understand things from your point of view?
Every creator wants to see his or her work completed by their own hands no matter how long it might take and taking that freedom and joy from them would be inhumane
sure, but only in things i know how to do. you wouldn't ask a hydraulics specialist to fix your corroborator, nor would you ask a gastroenterologist to perform brain surgery. like wise, a sequential arts expert probably shouldn't be directing motion pictures. sure, they're related, but that doesn't make them the same thing.

though someone else insisted that Kishmoto has no influence on the anime, so at the very least that frees him of any responsibility for the poor state of the anime.

Problem with Naruto fillers is that they can range from "fucking perfect" to "I killed myself by 24 minutes". Most of the fillers that were inbetween the timeskip were great for the most part, but stuff like the fillers that are coming out right now are just garbage. They are just oneshot episodes instead of maybe some 3-4 episode story or something.

Problem with the flashbacks is that like the fillers the quality and reason to have them fell off a cliff. The flashbacks are just tedious and most of them stopped having any character develop or important information that the audience wants to know. We don't need a 5th instance of Naruto noticing that Sasuke has always been an evil douchebag. And monologues are basically the same way, pretty forced and poorly timed. Hell in recent anime, the Danzo fight. The whole issue with that fight is Danzo has a limited time and stamina for his magical-eye-bullshit no jutsu yet he keeps stopping the fight for 10 minute stretches of monologue.

Also on a unmentioned note the artwork is all over the fucking place in anime and manga. We all probably seen the "my pain is greater" faces. Yet even in the manga recent chapters have entire pages that are just rough-draft drawings or are just lazy as all hell (no shading and the like).

Naruto really needs to just pace itself better and have some quality control.

Edit: Damn I forgot to mention all the worthless characters that are introduced and never mentioned or used properly. Ya aspiring writers don't bring up named characters who you don't introduce to the audience and when every other character knows who they are and hope we like them without knowing who in the fuck they are. Also Kishimoto needs to actually show off the long term characters who still haven't had anything to do.

Lets see almost all the character are over used shoenen stereotypes. the story is startingto run on way longer than it should the endless fight scenes are reptative is starting to follow the formulay of (enemy strong, enemy has obscure weakness, dedicate at least 4-15 minutes describing that weakness,6-10 minutes of preparing to attack, continue next episode) and when u have alot of strong enemies the fun begins

I can agree. George Lucas is a hack, and should be kept away from pen and paper. But its the third highest grossing film series of all time. He had to do something right for it to be there.

And yes, the Prequel was bad. I wont argue that. But the original trilogy was an amazing series, ruined by the prequel made there after.

I think I've replied to this once before. Naruto is just very bland shonen in my opinion. I liked a couple characters and it was okay but got boring very fast. It's not utter shit but as I dig deeper and find more interesting and better done manga or anime, stuff like Naruto and Bleach just don't hold up.

Especially anime-wise. 26 episodes of concentrated awesome is just infinitely better than 220 episodes of sloppily animated, filler... filled patience excercises.

Everything Naruto, and by extension Bleach, does is done better by One Piece. So I watch that instead.
Also, this. Just this. I only read the manga but even then it's the one thing that made me stop buying Naruto and makes me wonder why I'm still reading Bleach.
