Why am I never allowed to side with the bad guy?

I was beaten to it.

...but the evil ending sucked unfortunately. There must be other games where you can join the big bad where it doesn't fail at it miserably.

I wouldn't say the evil ending sucked. It was a perfectly logical outcome to the clash between the big bad's ultimate plan and the player character's own power.

That is, to say, it makes sense for Kerghan to turn on you since his plan was to destroy everything and it makes sense for the player character to win the dual since making it through the events of the games shows how powerful they are. I don't see what the problem is with that.

:) this was the ending i got my first run

was a MASSIVE '0.0!!! holy shit!!! they went there!!!' moment to, and it's still one of my favorite endings, in any game cause of how much its not the 'status-quo-restoring-happy-ending'

How about Link for once forget about the whole hero of time business and decide to team up with Ganondorf or play as a evil being who goal is to release Ganondorf before Link killed you?

Being evil at that point was really rubbish though, it wasn't being evil, it was doing what you needed to do to make sure nobody died next year. There's no reason why you couldn't make the Kingdom lovely again when we've fended of the shadow creatures of doom..

The bit where you have the choice to drain the lake to make weapons or leave it as it looks nice really fucked me off; "We're all going to fucking die this time next year if I don't drain that lake for metal for weapons and I'm dubbed evil because I want to leave it there?!"

Kerghan's intent was really clear to me, and it couldn't have been more obvious, which is why I felt it didn't really make too much sense.
I thought your character and Kerghan AGREED to kill EVERYTHING, so why is it that all of the sudden you need to defend yourself, why is it that he "turns on you"? It makes sense for him to try and kill you, but it doesn't make sense to fight back in the first place.

I'd really like to have more options to play evil characters in open world rpgs like The Elder Scrolls games, for example in Skyrim you can play as an assassin and/or thieve and generally be an ass and thats a good experience (well apart from the fact my thieves guild questline broke) but I really want the option to become a bandit and have various goals like raiding farms/settlements comitting highway robbery etc

That's a good point. I guess the player character's sense of self-preservation won out? I got nothing really.

I remember you could become the dark lord again in KOTOR. That was an evil path. Also... there's Fallout New Vegas, which lets you side with basically anybody. :eek:

OT: I actually like for the Dark Side[sup]TM[/sup] to be an option in games where the choice is given. However, I understand not actually being able to make that decision if there is a specific story being told.

Disgaea you're the anti-hero... well... except for 2 and MAYBE 4... i havn't played 4 so IDK... but you spend the entire game being your evil self... but see... evil is all reletive.. the "Evil" side... always does it for their own reasons to try and make things better... well... except for Disgaea 1's Laharl... he's just a brat and a prick
until he sacrifices himself to save the angel Flonne... unless you choose the "bad end" and actually kill the seriph...

and in Disgaea 3 while you're still evil and kinda a tyrant, the "big bad" is actually a hero-turned-villian and is quite despicable... so it's really "evil-Vs-Evil" and while you're still technically evil, you're doing it for all the right reasons... it's complicated... (and once you beat Aurum you leave him alive for gruesome experimentation... evil enough for ya?

See I love playing as an evil character, its so much more interesting, but most games are still made to the story of the hero. Even if there is an option to be evil it usually results in an inferior story or experience. Why cant we have more games that focus on the story of the villain?

When I first played Pokemon back in 1998 and got to the end of Nugget Bridge and they asked if I'd be interested in joining Team Rocket

Yeah no RPGs let you do that.... Also a choice between good and evil is no choice at all. Most games that let you join the "bad guy" his "badness" is questionable.

I do understand that it would be unfeasible in most games to allow you to join the bad guys, due to the constraints of storytelling and development time, but I always get disappointed when so called 'open ended' games don't allow you join the kickass, evil team (with inexplicably British accents), while several of the games that do just result in non-standard game-overs, which I find to be even worse than not giving you the option.

Also, thanks for the examples of games which feature this, I now have some 'evil' games for my list.
