Why are main characters always right handed?

Well, Link in The Legend of Zelda is left handed.
Except for the Wii version of Twilight Princess...
Twilight Princess on the Wii is a mirror version of the Gamecube version.

Anyway, aren't a majority of people right-handed? Of all the people I know (and that's quite a bit) only two of them are left-handed, so that's probably why it's so uncommon in video games.

Well, its not like it effects gameplay or anything. Unless it's like Guitar Hero.

Which is weird, because I'm a lefty, and I can play Guitar Hero normally.

I've noticed that in almost all video games the main charceter is a righty? if yu've played a game with a left handed main character tell me about it.
I haven't even looked yet but... they aren't

Just most of them.

Not many gamers are left handed... and in turn not many game characters are left handed.

I always wondered how lefties coped with how so many games require "aim with right-stick, move with left"

and Samus' arm cannon is on her right arm, so she might be left-handed (or ambidexterous).
I doubt she's left handed, Zero suit Samus holds her pistol with her right hand. So she's either ambidextrous or she enjoys rendering her good hand useless half the time.

i can't remember the game for some reason but a third person shooter i played as of recent lets you switch shoulder views, in which im pretty sure it changes hands for the gun also, so its ambi dextrous in that game

and like someone said, most people are right handed, its just natural to put it that way
Do you mean Gears of War? Because I noticed that they switch hands whenever they turn.

I didn't say that ^^; I said this:

Link in Wind Waker was left-handed, and Samus' arm cannon is on her right arm, so she might be left-handed (or ambidexterous).
I'd call Samus right handed, you don't aim with your bad arm do you?
You somehow mixed up the quote.

I can't say for sure but i think Luigi is left handed. If you play the Mario sports games you will see quite a few left handed people.

It really did bother me that they took the easy way out, and instead of keeping Link left-handed like he has been forever, the port of Twilight Princess had everything mirrored. I suppose from a technical standpoint, since you have to swing the Wiimote to make Link slash and most people are righties, it does make sense. However, I'm left-handed and to be honest it makes absolutely no difference to gameplay which hand you hold the Wiimote with. Bottom line, it was fscking CHEAP to make Link right-handed.

Bleah, sorry for the rant. That issue has bothered me since the game first came out.

I know I've seen left-handed main characters in a few different games, but right now the only one that's coming to mind is Clive Barker's Undying - the first time I played that it felt really weird since guns always go on the right, but I barely noticed after a while.

I think it's because while it's not exclusive, creators tend to make characters that are generally similar to themselves. Hence why people MOSTLY create characters of the same ethnicity, handedness, etc... Chances are the left handed characters people have reported (which are a minority) were created by someone who was left handed, or at least the artist probably was.

One fun fact (which I've mentioned before)

If you ever take pursuit training one thing they teach you is that if your chasing an untrained suspect (or someone your not sure enough) and lose sight of them where there is a choice of directions ALWAYS turn left.

The reason for this is that most people (like 70%) are right handed, and handedness does come from which side of the brain is dominant. People tend to think towards the direction of their dominant side instinctively. However a person wanting to evade pursuit intentionally thinks counter intuitively i.e. the direction that feels sneaky to them is to turn left.

Thus while not guaranteed this increases your odds a bit since your thinking like a person who is running away so to speak.

Now when dealing with someone who understands this it becomes 50-50 of course because of circular logic... you know will the guy turn right because he expects me to go left? or turn left anyway because he thinks I'll think he'll go right so he'll still go left... ad infinium. :p

Veteran video gamers might remember the old "follow the right wall" trick for navigating mazes in RPG games and such. That was by and large popularized by right handed people, and can work just as easily in reverse. While differant it relies on a similar kind of logic. I still remember when that was new and that was the default advice for people lost in like the old SSI "Gold Box" AD&D games. :p

Rambling and off topic, but this topic made me think of this stuff.
