Why are people buying Skyrim?

It's just impatience. Still, early buyers will end up spending a lot more than just 60 dollars on the game since Bethesda is bound to release DLC packs. I'll probably end up getting it in a year or two when the GOTY edition comes out but it's not really a priority at the moment.

Yeah, impatience mostly. I am lucky enough to have enough money stashed away to be able to buy both the game and any eventual DLC/expansions on release.

I never understood why people complained about the leveling system in oblivion, if it gets to hard just turn down the difficulty, that should work unless you made a character without putting any thought into their combat capability

I waited for the oblivion GOTY edition to be on sale before I picked it up and I regret the decision. I felt like I missed out on the community that sprang up around the game. The game had (has?) one of the most amazing mod communities I've ever seen and I regret not being a part of it.

So yeah, I'm going to be buying skyrim on release, so I don't miss it this time.

What the dear King wrote in this post... also goes for me... im a sucker for these kinda games, also i like "the golden age" in my little messed up world i like axes,swords, bows and arrows more than guns... its just cooler combat

These games and especially the Elder Scrolls are really popular right now. People buy these early because they like the games, plus with stuff like Steam and XBL, getting the expansion packs when they come out has gotten really easy too.

Personally, I have the game pre-ordered (have for months) and will be going to the midnight release at our town mall if at all possible. I want to play this game NOW, and not wait a year or two for another version that, lets face it, may not even come out. With my hard drive situation right now (I have less than 1G of space left on my drive) I won't be buying the DLC as it comes out anyways. If a GOTY edition does indeed come out later on, I'll sell my original copy and buy the GOTY version.

Now before anyone gets mad or assumes this is some sort of anti-Skyrim thread, it's not. I'm not bashing the game, the developer or anyone who is interested in it.

But let's look at Oblivion and Fallout 3. Both of those games were eventually given expansion packs, and then re-released as a game that contained the original game plus all of the expansion packs. Sometimes these were cheaper than the original game.

So assuming that's going to happen with Skyrim, why buy it now? Is it just a matter of impatience? Do people want to support Bethesda by possibly buying the game twice?

Is there anyone reading this who does just plan on buying it once the Game of the Year edition comes out?

Just curious.

That sounds more financially practical and I regret buying a few games that got a GOTY or updated version not that much later. But, with a game like Skyrim I can't wait to play it. This could hold true for waiting for just a general price drop. A lot of games that I want but can wait I'll try to get the better deal.

I personally love to support companies I think are making games worth buying by paying full price. I think Rocksteady and Bethesda both deserve my money this month but I can only afford one so unfortunately I gotta go with Bethesda and their ability to make me THIS hyped for a game.

I do this with things. If I like it or think that the developers/directors/crew/author/whatever deserves supporting and deserves my money then I am more than happy to give it to them. I am more than happy to pay to see Scott Pilgrim at the cinema and then buy it on DVD just as I am more than happy to buy Skyrim or Misfits on DVD.

I will not however support things I don't see are worth supporting. If I want to play MW3 at somepoint I will borrow, rent or buy pre-owned or when it's not £50.

Because the amount of money I'd save by waiting a year is not enough to warrant waiting a damn year for Skyrim. I think I can only barely make it through the next 5 days.

what the OP describes, is exactly the reason why I usually wait 6 month or more before buying a new game.

With Skyrim, I might make an exception though, partly because I predict I won't be "done" with the game within a week or two, like usual (I still replay games that take a week or two to complete, It's simply unusual for a game to have this much re-playability withut having to atart a new game).

The Map is huge...there are 300 odd dungeons...and god knows how many towns and city's...

Does it really NEED expansions? i doubt anyone will complete EVERY SINGE QUEST in the game in the first few months, there are a shit ton, main and side quest.

Because a guy came into my office the other day with a pretty crazed glint to his eye and a Bowie knife, and he said that if I don't pre-order Skyrim by the end of this weekend he'll slice me up and down until I look like salami.

I tried calling the police, but they told me he's been going to a lot of places doing this, and what with all the budget cuts, they can't take on new cases. So now I need to buy Skyrim or look like food.

Well, you could say it's because if no one buys it, then they won't make DLC for it because it didn't sell, and then we won't have the GotY/Ultimate edition

I have been waiting since 2004 its now the nearing the end of 2011 i think i have waited enought plus i would have to add another year to that time if i was to wait for GOTY edition so no imma buy it right now.

Yeah, impatience I guess. But that's a rather derogatory way of looking at it - I've been bloody patient all this time.

I guess it's just being a true fan that does it, because I want the game SO DAMN MUCH at this point that waiting for another year or so for a non-existent (for me) financial reason would be silly.

This. We've been waiting years for this to be made, we don't want to wait another year just so all the DLC will be compiled into a single package.
Also: Steam sales on DLC. So it won't be THAT expensive to buy it all individually, if we time our purchases right.
