Why Are So Many Manga Characters Drawn to Look Like White People?

Short answer: They DON'T look like white people.

Pretty much this.

The Japanese learned the art of animation from us Americans during the 1950s, the height of Disney as world animation leader. Disney characters have huge eyes - thus the large eyes in anime. That is changing over time, but eyes will always be proportionally larger than normal in animation because we look to eyes to understand expression. As the video notes, the profiles of anime characters are identical to the profiles of actual Japanese faces. This is the case even in the mangas you mentioned.

Actually most anime characters look asian, mainly in the fact that most of them, especially the women characters, have faces with not that much definition but more with large cheekbones and a sharp chin. Just like an asian.

Their eyes also have a large seperation which is obviously exaggerated however, asian people do in fact have a larger seperation of the eyes than white people due to the fact that their noses are generlly wider, but also smaller in terms of depth. (lack of cartalige) This make their noses seem smaller by comparison. Also, anime eyes tend to just stick out, this also is an asian trait since asian people don't have depth to their eyes, their eyes, pertrude from the face more whereas, white people have eyes that are more "sunken in".

Obviously not all anime characters have these traits, for example, I personally believe most Final Fantasy characters have a mixture of caucasian and asian in them, and it is different for each character. For example, : Yuna FFX = 70% asian, 30% caucasion. Lightning FFXIII = 75% caucasian 25% asian. These are just my own opinions and examples but you get the picture. In fact FF artist Tetsuya Nomura even explained when talking about characters like Cloud FFVII, that he was designed to look like white guy. So like I said not all of them are asian, some have a caucasion mix.

I was always under the impression that since early Manga was heavily influenced by american comics of the time that they combined several aspects of the comics (The realistic features of the pulp series combined with the large eyes and subdued facial features of the more cartoony comics) and you ended up with very white-looking characters. it was just the style of the time and the style didn't really branch off much from the original template which may explain why several characters of different ethnicity often share similarities with the rather offensive portrayals of non-white cultures seen in the comics from around the same time Manga first started printing.
but again, this is mostly speculation on my part.

Well, alot of an animated character's expressions are done through the eyes, so that sort of rules out making the characters look Asian because...well...you know...

In all seriousness, from what little anime/manga I've seen I'd say that very few characters are drawn as any particular race (excluding the fucking Boondock saints). Oh sure the average character's skin is white, but their eyes are angled (and unnervingly big), their noses are teeny-tiny and their hair is beyond the comprehension of any mortal.

Such features are pretty standard in any animation actually. If you learn how to draw faces one of the first things you will learn is to use fewer and softer lines with a female face as too many lines and angles will make them look more male. Typical standards of beauty for females also tends toward larger eyes, higher/fuller cheek bones, and smaller mouths (which also happen to be typical features associated with youth). Now especially when you are drawing in a cartoon fashion you are supposed to exaggerate characteristics to invoke the particular "feel" that you are going for. Most any cartoon drawing of a female is going to have the same sort of features you describe to denote "beauty" "youth" "innocence" ect. As far as I can remember nearly all of the older "wiser" characters I have seen in anime tend to have the "eye's closed" look (unless they are surprised of course) which is an exaggeration of the general "sleepy" eye lids that a lot of older asian people have.

I'm tired of seeing this question.

"Hey, they don't look like Japanese people, what with the big eyes, not being tanned, and different hair colours. Ofcourse, they look like US! We're the people with naturally growing pink hair!"

Ugh, I hate this question.

No, the Japanese don't look up to western people as some sort of idols. When they portray western people in anime and manga, they draw them as caricatures with big noses and square jaws. Often even the women.
Unless they're a main character, that is.

There's a reason the stereotype of a Japanese person is a xenophobe.

The Japanese traditionally believe they were descended from gods, and have been known to commit genocide because they believed themselves to be the superior race. Do you really think their characters look white to you because they look up to your kind?
You aren't some sort of superior person. Even in their eyes.

They look white to you because they're designed as blank slates. If they need to make a point out of the fact that a character is white, they will normally draw the character with some slightly whiter racial traits.
The video explaining this has already been posted.

The tradition of large eyes started because
1. Large eyes are a sign of beauty.
2. Early anime creators got the idea of giving their characters larger eyes to better express emotions from watching Disney animations.

Well, then how is a Japanese character in an anime supposed to look? Black hair and squinty eyes?

I never really understood this reasoning. Because they have big eyes they don't look Japanese? 99% of all cartoon characters have big eyes. They are afterall the windows to the soul, so you might as well make 'm big.

You can usually tell when there's an actual caucasian/westerner in an anime. They're the big burly ones with the huge noses and lips.

Whats wrong with hating something that inspired something you love? I don't think a deep love for Betty Boop and even older manga series such as Tezuka would be prerequisites for a love of moe anime series.

I always thought they were drawn to be the opposite of what the japanese look like or at most what they want to look like. Big eyes, big boobs, multi-colored hair, etc

what I ment was..Ive "heard about" (never actually encounted, only heard about) the sterotypical otaku/weaboo who is like "japanise animation/culure is SUPERIOR to western animation/culture" I imagine the kind of person who would hate Avatar the last air bender because it isnt japanise

when in reality Anime was insprired by western cartoons/animation..sure thease days it doesnt matter...but its still funny in a way

Here's your answer, by the way.

That was far more in-depth than I thought it would be, thank you (I already knew it, but now I have material to convince others).

Well to be fair if you ignore facial structure, skin colour and hair colour is there any difference at all between any races?
