Because there is at least a hundred years of tests and studies that say otherwise. The only reason people didn't know smoking was harmful for so long is that the cigarette companies purposely misled people, while with marijuana it's just scientists observing what people that smoke it frequently, with no one paying them millions of dollars to make it biased and change the results.
I'm as sceptical of some stoner appearing on TV saying that weed is safer than moderate drinking as I am of a tobacco industry spokesman. It has been associated with memory problems, psychosis and lung damage in people. Maybe alcoholics have more problems and many people smoking the occasional joint don't have any problems worth mentioning but a white wash is still a white wash no matter what it applies to.
*ahem*
Most recent studies on mostly middle-aged people have shown no more significant damage to the brain that can usually be blamed to the brain atrophying over time. I know lung damage is undeniable, but I still maintain that the same level of damage to your lungs can occur from simply being around smoke often.
A lot of the early studies done on marijuana were done on animals, and the results were messed with. In one study specifically, they tested on monkeys. While testing on monkeys, frequently the monkeys would pass out since they would force gas masks on the monkeys for several minutes at a time, so the damage to the brain was due to lack of oxygen rather that the marijuana.
However, younger people smoking a lot of weed can develop brain damage. But by the same toll, so is excessive exercise, too much time studying, too much time working, and too much time doing a lot of things when you're younger since you're body is still developing and can be easily damaged by over exerting yourself, which happens often in today's society with school and sports not allowing children to get enough sleep.
Marijuana has been looked into to actually limit brain damage sustained by injuries. It causes cancerous cells in the brain to kill themselves too. Plus, it's nature's best painkiller.
THC is used to block brain damage, as it is thought that a few of the enzymes found in marijuana prevents the build up of calcium which occurs after head and brain damage, and blocking the protein plaque build-up in the brain causing Alzheimer's.
People who smoke cigarettes and weed? Well, they have an almost 300% increased chance of lung cancer.
Marijuana does not increase lung cancer or damage by itself. Hell's Bell's, researchers at Harvard said that the same things in THC that prevent brain cancers and tumors from developing do the same thing in the lungs, where it kills cells before they turn malignant.
In my opinion, the white wash is about the beneficial effects of marijuana. Marijuana has been used as a scapegoat since the beginning of anti-drug legislation in the 30's, and was more easily seen as evil just because of the immigrants using it, and helping throw off the attention of the fact they had also made cocaine and heroin illegal, two drugs that many people thought were beneficial back then.
