I'm not complaining, but I was wondering if there is some innate response in humans to finding striped patterns alluring. What is it that makes stripes so damn hot?

Black and white in particular seem to be very popular, but is there a reason?

EDIT.
Sorry, I should clarify. I am referring mainly to clothing fashions, or tatoo designs. Strictly human. Apologies

Hey?

Do you mean, like, zebras are teh sexiest of horses and white tigers the sexiest of large cats?

Or do you mean why humans use strips to mark things? Black and white for pedestrian crossings, yellow and black for danger, etc?

Please establish some context here. Are we talking about bestiality with zebras? Snake-bites on unfortunate body parts? Cars? Fantasy species? Tattoos? What kind of sexy stripes do you mean?

I can't say that I've ever found striped patterns particularly alluring myself, but I suppose that they can cause visual distortions which some might find appealing. Vertical stripes tend to have a slimming affect on anyone who wears them, so you look a little skinnier if you've got vertical stripes on. The thickness or thinness of stripes could also lead to other psychological distortions which might serve, if nothing else, to give the wearer a strange quality which might make them seem more interesting if you didn't realize that it was actually just the stripes making them stand out from the crowd a bit.

it's never the stripes themselves that do it, it's what they're on. i figure it's kind of like being attracted to freckles.

that and things like tiger stripes are supposed to be "wild" and "exotic".

Yes.

High-contrast horizontal stripes direct the eye horizontally, undulating with the contours in the human body and give the illusion of more width, thus they tend to make people who wear them look more curvy. So basically, you just like curves.

I'm with this, though for most who do find them sexy, I'd imagine it would more be about the optical implication of different kinds. Like, on a guy, horizontal stripes would 'accentuate' a broad chest, and on women would exaggerate the bustiness. And with vertical strpies it could be the 'slimming' effect.

But then again, I'm a spaz, so this is just blind dark-stabbing.

Freaking awesome. Thank you, that was one of the few internet comments I've ever seen that has made me actively laugh.

It is because Tigers have stripes and Tigers are awesome.
