Why Are The Generation 1 Fans the Biggest Complainers About Each New Pokemon Generation?

My opinion is 151 is a good number, they even had the "there is only 150 but mewtwo is a clone (or whatever) of mew, TAH DAH!" surprise reveal.

Sure you can have new "hybrids" such as fire and ghost or something but after 151 it just gets a bit silly, for example: Just how many "god" pokémon are there now?

Another part of my complaint is the ... Anime? Cartoon? Ash ketchum wakes up on his 10th birthday to conquer the pokémon world and "catch 'em all" but leaves Kanto with about 5 pokémon, you're missing about 144 of them (come on, like he is going to catch mew or mewtwo), why the fuck are you leaving in search of new pokémon?

I'm a Gen 1 fan, so I guess that means I need to complain about the new Pokemon Generation now.

Or maybe broad generalizations masquerading as discussion are just stupid and I don't have to do anything of the sort.

Because new pokemon have changes in style/creativity.

I personally love the new ones. Been with this franchise since the beginning but my favorite is tied between the 2nd and 4th for having the best designs as well as the largest impact on the games IMO.

Also they tend to be the most wrong in terms of their arguments. (Let me explain)

You see, for every person that doesn't like the newer pokemon generations, there are about 4 more of them that tend to argue with "Oh they suck! Here is just this one pokemon and this one to, that proves they are all bad!"

The problem here is that they usually ignore the good.

This is why this is considered bad and heard of all the time:

And this is good but often ignored by haters so they can use Vanillish as their weapon for an argument:

The sad thing is that they tend to have one argument and just that they are bad, it doesn't work. These people will do everything in their power to make sure that you are turned off by the game by simply pulling out the bad completely ignoring Mr. Mime and Jynx.

Nostalgia is also a common factor, using memories as a base for what you know instead of going into this and coming out with an actual argument. It's like saying this movie sucks but then not actually seeing it.

if you don't like it fine, but stop ruining it for those that do enjoy it.

Know what? I'm 32 years old. I like the Pokemon franchise very much. It's the kind of RPG that I can happily enjoy while murdering opponents (metaphorically, I mean; though Ghetsis is one that I might not wish to do this thing metaphorically) and raisin' mah teamz. For me, it doesn't matter what generation was considered "best" or which game in the series was the first you played; it's enough when I have fun and enjoy playing the game.

Personally, I like running Steel and Dragon type teams as I play, and that's the way I wish to play my games. I don't care so much about the competitional aspect of Pokemon between other players; though, I'm not vocal about this towards others of the opposite view because this is how I feel, and how I feel shouldn't be treated as the "one-and-only" view of how to play Pokemon.

Somewhere in between all of the meaningless opinions, the mindless bickering and the pointless rage, the point of Pokemon of missed - that what's important is that you have fun, bond with your team, learn from your battles and grow as a person.

Well, that and leveling your Adamant natured Garchomp (or insert favorite Pokemon here) to completely obliterate, Exodia style, everyone that stands in your way.
Dragon Dancing a Haxorus pretty much means you win the game from what I have learned in PVP. Though to be fair he is on my "Fuck everything up in one go" team while my main team consists of "Fuck up my opponents strategy by making my own come on later" team.

I've been playing since Gen 1. Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh.

Personally, I try to choose my team based on form over function, with a heavy preference of bipedal pokemon.

Though every generation has a few pokemon I simply don't find ascetically pleasing, let alone make any sense, it just seems that the newer generations have more of them (Trash, Ice-cream, Gear, etc.)

I didn't make any broad generalizations in my topic though.
I have acknowledged that this isn't everyone who likes Generation 1 only. However a decent majority of the people who come on boards to hate on every new generation to come out happen to be people who claimed they haven't played Pokemon since the original Red/Blue/Gold/Silver.
After repeating this cycle for 13 years I'm just wondering- why continue to complain? Why not just move on?

Those lenses aren't nearly rose-tinted enough.

I think it's probably due to there being more of them- a lot of people stopped playing after the first gen (I stopped after the second, on account of never having a GBA or DS) and have fond memories of it. People who have followed the series all along tend to be a bit more forgiving on newer generations (but everyone agrees that Vanillish is stupid).

People are afraid of change, no matter how slight. And I myself can attest to that. But not only has every generation brought new Pokemon that I like, they also have provided new content. I'm psyched for every new Pokemon game that comes out (little less for B/W2 because still the same region but w/e) People have to find at least one Pokemon they like in each gen.

I've been playing since Blue, since I got my first Squirtle, and I've always been a fan of the games. The anime kinda went downhill after Jhoto, but I digress.

Also, since this is discussing generations of Pokemon, I posit that Darmanitan is the most powerful Pokemon of Gen V. I love it to death and miss it when I play the older ones.

One. Arceus. The rest are either incredibly rare (Zapdos and other trio Pokemon) or unique (in personality and power).
Isn't there like deoxis or something, then there is the ulitmate regi dude, the ones on the front of the black and white games, what about oh ho or something ... first seen in the first series of pokémon.

Like I said/implied I'm not up to date with all the names and such but it seems with every new gen there is a god tier.

Because nobody talks about it... I feel sorry for the obsessive completest kids who have yet to touch a Pokemon game, and want to get the X/Y versions. Think about it - X/Y is supposed to have somewhere around 700-750 Pokemon? We had it real easy back then, back when the series was able to let us live our lives...

When presented with this question I've often replied "Once it got to the point where I couldn't name them all anymore I was done".

The gameplay is as solid as it ever was, the problem is that nobody stands out except starters and legendary pokemon. I see hundreds of pokemon and they're all just a blur of primary colors. I can clearly visualize 150 pokemon. I can't pick out 500+. I can still tell you what my strategy was for pokemon blue. Butterfree to defeat Brock, buy magikarp because I'm never going to be short on money and I can start leveling him up in Mt. Moon. Pikachu to defeat Misty, catch an Abra and destroy the rest of the game with Kadabra. From then on my team consists of Kadabra, Zapdos, Blastoise, Dugtrio (to defeat Lt. Surge), Gyarados, and whatever pokemon needs experience points to level up and evolve. Plant/bug pokemon can suck it once I've beaten Brock.

None of the protagonists make any impact either.(the tv show went a long way towards helping the original games in this aspect).

It all just became too much after 150. I did play several of the other games, I just couldn't get into them. I still play pokemon blue/fire red to this day though, so it's not the gameplay that's the problem. It's the fact that none of the pokemon or characters in the new games make an impression.

I know that there are people who say "Gen I is the only good one!" but I'd really appreciate not stereotyping the entire lot. I'm a fan of Gen I. But my favorite is the Gen IV remake of Gen II. I also liked Gen III. Maybe you'd think that distinction is enough, but I'm still one of the people complaining about the modern Gens. Though I may just be one of the people who grew out of it. I'll probably eventually find out whenever X/Y releases.

I started playing Pokemon with Gen I. I still have my original Red cartridge, and for the time being it still works. I played Gen II, Gen III, the remakes of Gen I, and Gen IV was where I started feeling something was off. Now, I didn't mind Gen IV. I put over 60 hours into it. But you know what the problem is? I can't remember practically anything that happened during those 60+ hours of game time. I can still remember Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn. But the remakes of Gen II struck me right in the nostalgia and made me forget all of those reservations. Then Black/White came.

I couldn't even finish them.

And it's not because "the designs are uninspired" (though there were only a handful I actually liked). It's not because the gameplay is crap or anything (on the contrary, it's probably the best it's ever been; Though it could do with speeding up). It's not even because I was "bored of the same old story" (though the story factors into it).

No, I didn't like Black/White because in their attempts to recapture the magic of Gen I, GameFreak appeared to have forgotten what made the Pokemon games so compelling in the first place: The world. And everything packaged with it. Unova was such an, ironically, flat region. Its layout was nonsense, its Pokemon distribution was insane (seriously, no Water Pokemon in the wild aside from some shitty duck until five badges in?), and its pacing was abysmal due in no small part to the fact that GameFreak, or whomever does the writing of Pokemon, are about on the same level as Capcom and Sonic Team in writing skills.

If you really want me to touch on the Pokemon designs themselves, then I will. I didn't like the majority of them. Not because they were just ugly, but because they didn't make sense. If you look at Geodude or Onix, you immediately know what Type they're going to be. Dewgong, Articuno, Machamp, Gastly, Arbok, Golbat, Butterfree, Tauros, Rhyhorn, Dratini, Aerodactyl, hell, even Gyarados. Their designs and coloring immediately convey what types they correspond with. Even Gen II and III did it. Umbreon, Steelix, Ampharos, Poochyena, Ralts, Slugma, Camerupt, Skarmory, Electrike, Lotad, Makuhita, Sableye, Sneasel, Aron, Tyranitar, Meditite, Trapinch... sure, there were a few that make no sense, like Spoink, or Shiftry's half-Dark, or Altaria being half-Dragon, but they weren't the norm.

Purrloin is a Dark Type? I never would've guessed that. Roggenrola, Woobat, and Timburr my problems are two-fold with. Roggenrola and Timburr because they're uglier reskins of Geodude and Machop. Woobat because it's an uglier reskin of Zubat, and because it's part-Psychic for some reason. Why is Scraggy part-Dark? Archen and Archeops look ridiculous for being a two-stage version of Aerodactyl. Emolga is part-Flying? Oh, I get it, flying squirrel, great.

Admittedly it does have ones that do convey their typing, but they're spread out weirdly in the actual in-game world.

And then there's the evolution requirements... you know, I get wanting to have more to strive for past leveling Pokemon to 40 or so. I do. It's cool that more can still happen to them after they've hit the original 'peak' of 36 set by the Gen I starters. But the sheer number of Pokemon in Gen V that didn't evolve until after level 45? No. Just no. Especially for ones that only evolved once. Especially when you get them at relatively low levels in the wild. Dratini, Larvitar, Bagon, you found them at low levels and they took a while to grow into their final forms for a reason. I fail to see the reason for most of the Unova Pokemon.

For me i played the red blue and yellow, the original, as i think they got released or under a different name. Sorry side tracked, i got all 151 traded with my friends that was months of my life, but after that i felt i was done, Silver and gold came out and i wasn't interested i gave up around that point.

I didn't know hating Pokemon after the original gen was a thing. I mean, I've seen people joke about there only being 151 and the rest being wrong or fake or whatever, but... I didn't know people actually hated it. I'm a gen 1 player and I always enjoyed the following gens, right before I kinda stopped playing, due to having to buy a 3DS (fuck that, Pokemon would be the only game I'd play so it's not worth it). Actually, I think I missed Black and White, too.

Point is, I don't get it, either!

Yeah, what happened to all the serious designs?

Real Pokemon are slime, balls and magnets.

Poor Trubbish gets no respect; fuck that ice cream cone though.

OT: I played Red and Blue, and about half of Yellow; then I didn't touch another one until B&W. It was partly because in the intervening years I had found better games to occupy my time, and also that there was little reason to keep expanding the roster to absurdly bloated numbers. I did, however, pick up B&W a few months after it came out and was quite blown away how far the game had come since I was 8. The roster was just a refreshing return to that healthy mix of natural and absurd monster designs that Gen 1 & 2 had; especially considering how gaudy and ugly most of the Gen 4 designs were.

That being said, now that I am done with B&W and it's sequels I don't feel much of a need to continue buying into the franchise for another 15 years or so. The game has changed over the years but not very fast or too drastically to warrant buying every iteration.

Call me when they finally put a generation on a console; now that will be worth checking out.
