There is a simple way to solve this problem. Stop buying them. Or, if you can't do that (or it doesn't work, see Tomb Raider), just start WW3, and in about 100 years, video games will be about that, if we can get over it in that time...bunch of over-sensitive weirdos we have today.

We need more alternate timeline war game ! (No, not "killzone" with their Nazis aliens...) And, yes, I'm well aware of the Nazi Singularity problem...

More like TimeShift, but more open and more subtle (less gimmicky). Lets say:

Imagine a world where the US lost the independence war. Now, in 2010, a complete weird new setting; The Second Independence War. You could put an incredible nice background story given by news reel at the beginning of the game (Watchmen-style), have different vehicles and weaponry with a modern feeling. It could be a intelligent Stealth-FPS (guerrilla) or a pure war game.

That's only one simple idea.

If you want to milk a franchise, use the US invade Canada in 2050 (or something like that) for petrol story that came from the Fallout background.

Easy, simple, different and interesting. I can almost smell the good game aroma mixed with just enough of return investment.

i;ve probably been ninjad in here, but my theroy is this.

most of the big name game companies reside in america, they make games FOR americans, and really.. ww2 was the ONLY war inwhich they really, truely won. where they went in to fight an unambigious, world hated enemy, and came out the victor. its also very easy to make ww2 games, because you know what happens. you pick a small area of, lets say france, find one or 2 units that fought in that area, mov your ingame units around the way those real units moved around, and fill in the rest with actiony gunfights and nazi killing.

ww2 games are safe. everyone has gotten over the emotional turmoil and controversy. you can HAVE a game set in ww2 where your whole platoon gets wiped out by one or two artillery shells, and no one is gunna bat an eye. but you make a game where your one platoon gets wiped out by a road side bomb in iraq, and all of a sudden your game is "tasteless, controversial, and over the top"

and finally. like i said before. ww2 games are just easier. you KNOW the americans are going to gt bogged down in holland, you KNOW they are going to break past normandy, the seigfried line, and march halfway into germany before meeting up with the russians [attention devs, i want to actually SEE some russians in the city in your next ww2 game. perhaps a near firefight before they realize they are allies?] all you have to do is send your unit of godlike supermen to various important battles in europe, fill i nth blanks with explosions, shooting and germans, and presto. instant smash hit.

TL:DR ww2 games are safe and easy, and aimed at an american audience. cuz you know, america is the ONLY country in the world -_-

[on a side note, i want to see some ww2 games take place in north africa and italy. i;ve onyl played like, 1 COD where you were in both places.

Because America would probably ban any WWI games on account of them not involving them saving the Earth or whatever.
