Why are VS threads looked down upon?

Let's see if I can, just at random, remember some of the biggest VS wars I've seen in the last 10 or so years...

Halo vs Metroid
Cloud vs Squall
Master Chief vs Cryptosporidium
Kefka vs Sephiroth

Notice there's an underlying common factor in these? Most of the VS threads I have seen involve Final Fantasy vs (either itself or something else) or Halo vs (something else). Then there's the generic ones like Robot vs Ninja and stuff, where it's less about the character/series and more about the concept/coolness factor. But it's essentially the same deal.

Sometimes you get people who switch it up and try to please others by saying things like "What if Master Chief and Samus hooked up and had a kid?" and "Wouldn't it be cool if Gordon Freeman was really Master Chief and in the next game they team up with Krytos?" Kinda silly, but thankfully those are either utter failure or lolz moments.

Oh and Haloid. That was awesome because it turned out they were both women. I don't think a lot of Halo fans expected that, and for that I not only lol'd but applauded the guy who made it. Because "Master Chick" as I heard her called, was a great looking girl who would have logially made all the various Halo fans "jism in their pants" if they'd stop raging.

Well yeah there's the flamewar thing, but also, how the hell do you discuss something like that? If I said to you "Apples vs Oranges", all you can really say to that is which you prefer and why. There's no potential for further discussion except just stating the same things over and over.

There are innumerable philosophical themes about apples and oranges, and their superiorities over each other to discuss, what are you talking about?

Good point. I pretty sure no vs threads are somewhere in the forum guidelines for posting, so it is pretty hypocritical of them to do the Question of the Day in a similar manner.

Because they offer little basis for discussion, and usually result in people posting one word then leaving. They also delve into flame wars.

If versus posts were more like this:

"Out of these two things, I find myself liking this one more than the other. I like it more because *insert reasons here*. I'm curious to see what you all think. Which one do you like more, and why do you like them?"

If they were more like that, then people may be fine with them. However all they mostly are now is "Which is better, "x" or "y"?

It offers no jumping point for discussion, encourages low content posts, and it usually goes into a flame war.

They tend to provide little or no discussion and are based on faulty ideas in the first place.

No, you can't fucking compare a space marine from fictional world X with a mage from a fictional world B when everything including the basic physical laws of these two worlds differ. So all you get is 2 groups of fanboys, one rooting for the space marine and the other for the mage. And the people who call both groups fucking retards for a very good reason.

VS threads are bad, mkay. You don't compare apples and oranges.

Edit: Of course, considering that there are plenty of threads and responses that have no discussion value and aren't in any way related to VS threads... Yeah, it's depressing.

You got it. They usually end up in a bunch of people bickering about this or that; and in the end, the thread is so pathetically generic that you can copy-paste your reply from an identical thread into the new one.

Coincidentally; I usually end up making about one of these threads a month. Sometimes by accident.

As for the topic... not much more I can say really. I like 'em because they start to show a general opinion but eventually, a war of flame.

I don't mind them. They may not have much discussion value but they are nice to get a general poll of what people on the Escapist think. I rarely see too many in a short timeframe but I'm also not really looking for them.

Because it usually results in a very ugly fanboy clash, especially since both sides rarely have knowledge of the other side's universe. For example: Master Chief vs. Samus Aran, most Halo fanboys will just stick with Master Chief even though they've never played a Metroid game, and if they did they would know how ridiculously durable and well armed Samus is in comparison.

They're also quite devoid of dicussion value for this reason. People who actually know a lot about both Universes could come up with a interesting discussion, but everyone else won't.

Very little worthwhile discussion comes from them, they require no thought to make and they generally end in a flame war. How's that for a reason?
