I've said this several times on this site, I might make a thread dedicated to observational skills.

The question to the answer 42 is

Its repeated several times in the books but no one seems to take notice.
Marvin the paranoid Android tells the group on the rockstars starship and he tells Zem the talking matress on the planet Squornshellus Zeta.

But then why are we here? Again? The universe would have collapsed on itself and reformed...unless that was the question, but now that both were discovered within the universe, after it collapsed and created a new universe, the question must have changed...

It happens when someone figures it out, Marvin never figured it out, he read it in Arthur Dents mind.

Because Arthur Dent is too thick to figure out the question the universe survives, although Marvin is somehow 7 times older than the universe, so it has been figured out 7 times in the book, we just weren't privy to how it was figured it out and who figured it out.

Yeah.

That only explains the 'how' which is something else than the 'why'. People are rather keen on finding that why, even though there is no natural law that states that there has to be an answer to that in the first place.

It does explain why. Because it happened, that is why. No greater meaning or anything, just that.
