It's quite simple really.
To find our own meaning in it. No one can tell you the meaning of life, you must find it yourself.

It's one of life's great mysteries, isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God, watching everything, you know, with a plan for us and stuff? I don't know man, but it keeps me up at night.

...People assume that life is a progression of Cause to Effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big BALL of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey...random occurances!

Also, the ACTUAL question is '6 x 9 = 42'

I've always thought there was something fundamentally wrong with the universe

Why do we need a reason? Random chance is how we are here. Do you need a purpose in life? This is why I game, I read, I generally "waste" time. Because it's fun. I don't have anything better to do. Enjoy life, who cares about a reason.

My purpose in life is to gobble up as much knowledge as possible (with occasionally breaks for cookies) before I run out of time - not for any greater purpose, not because its a virtuous task, not because of the false promise some mythical after-life. I don't care what the knowledge concerns (hard science, literature, history, religious mythology, sex, popular culture, etc.), I just hunger for the act of learning.

Incidentally, that's why I'm here (and on a dozen other sites) - the internet is just one big steaming pile of empty intellectual calories. Of course, this is also why I avoid the internet assiduously when I'm not at work and can read books without being fired.

Unless you believe in a religion, none of those questions have an answer. There is no reason, no purpose, no goal.
Life just is. Do what you want.
Absolute winanswer

To find the ultimate question to the answer 42
I've said this several times on this site, I might make a thread dedicated to observational skills.

The question to the answer 42 is
[HEADING=1]"THINK OF A NUMBER ANY NUMBER?"[/HEADING]

Its repeated several times in the books but no one seems to take notice.
Marvin the paranoid Android tells the group on the rockstars starship and he tells Zem the talking matress on the planet Squornshellus Zeta.
Actually, the question is "What is 6 by 9", figure THAT out.

OT: To propagate the species, DUH.

I'm not going to answer this seriously because it ends in a flame war.

The ultimate purpose of our lives is to wait for Half life 2: Episode 3.

Everyone knows that isn't it, even though its in line with base thirteen Douglas Adams actually swatted that one done.

But he's never swatted "think of a number, any number"

I am here to live my life, to achieve my goals, to leave my mark on this planet no matter how big or small it is.

I think the meaning of life in a way is to simply.....die. If god is real then you won't really be alive until you die that is if you go to heaven. But if there is no god then whats the point of going through all this? in the end there is no true meaning to all life it is whatever that person makes of it and wishes for their meaning to be.

That's the joke

It's a bit from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

You know how the computer was designed to find THE ANSWER (Which was 42) and then designed Earth to find THE QUESTION? Well, early in Earth's 'execution', a spaceship full of the 'useless third of civilisation' (the middlemen of an alien galaxy were tricked into boarding shuttles to escape a (fake) apocalypse, so that the civilisation could prosper without useless things like phone cleaners and joggers) crashed on the surface and accidently wiped out the REAL humans (modern humans are descended from the useless third). This corrupted the algorithms of Earth, which is why the Question is wrong, hence:

"Six times Nine. Forty-two. That's all there is"
"I've always thought there was something fundamentally wrong with the universe"

Ahhh I see, that's what I get for never finishing the book...
