Why can't my computer run Fallout:New Vegas on high settings?

Even though system requirements lab says I can?

When I tested it it said that my computer was at top speed to run this game, but when I put New Vegas on High or Very High I get a terribly choppy frame rate.

Here's a screeny of the results. http://uploadpad.com/files/dfsdfdf.jpg

Can anyone help?

Does your computer run 64 bit? If it doesn't, MAKE SURE IT DOES.
That was my exact problem and now I run it at the highest settings, with slim to no problems.

Yeah it's Windows 7 64 bit. I have a custom launcher that makes it use all 4 gigs of RAM while playing, but I didn't really notice a difference.

I don't believe 4 gigs is enough IIRC, correct me if I'm wrong.

Enough for what? If for New Vegas, the minimum requirement is 2gb.

Apparently the game simply guesses your graphics card specs after simply taking down the model and number, and frequently gets the actual details wrong.

The engine itself is apparently rather unstable too, and to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if it suffers memory leaks. I'd say the problem is more likely to be at their end than yours.

On a side-note: Can you run it? doesn't mean anythign really. The listed minimum specs on a game rarely let you run it smoothly on minimum settings, and just because it says you pass everything doesn't indicate how it will run.

Is there any way to fix this?

But On 7 it needs four I think. Or thats vista either way your a little low on memory. The video card looks good, but the rest of its specs may be eh...off.

yeah... I'd guess you either have a somewhat weak video card (is it an NVIDIA card with 'GS' at the end of the designation?) or you've got a whole bunch of crap loaded in windows startup slowing you down... but those are rather uneducated guesses, due to the limited information you've given us.

My best guess would be the software issue.

1)Try updating directx
2)Get rid of any backgroud memory leeches
3)Update your graphic driver
4)Their engine is a buggy, leaky ball of crap

If none of that helps try overclocking your machine. If that doesn't help you can use it as a foot warmer. :p

Or, just drop the detail level, sucks but, hey.

Is it only laggy at certain locations? If it's laggy when there are a number of NPCs nearby it might be from a directx glitch. Try downloading this and putting it in the installation folder. http://www.mediafire.com/?5ubmvumlv4z4rtc

Even if it doesn't work, it's worth a try.

Source is here, comments confirm not a virus.

lol.. maybe your system 'should' be able to run the game on high UNDER PEREFCT CONDITION... but the engine is FAR from perfect.

I would also clean my registry and cache with CCleaner. [http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner]

There were leftovers in my registry that gave me problems running games before.

it only covers the minimum there. Is it possible that your computer is nowhere near the recommended?

Are you using this mod: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778 ?

If not, you should give it a try. It fixes most people's frame rate problems with the game.

4 gigs should be plenty - I run it on high settings with 3 gigs on windows 7. It's very likely bethesda's buggy creation. (which I'm in love with, flaws and all)
