I play females because they are more attractive..and kick ass and seem a little more bad and darker than the males. duh!

I play mixed, sometimes male sometimes female. I dunno why people do it. I do it mostly because my female avatar ingame looks hot/beautiful/cute or something similar. But on some occasions I actually choose based on the roleplay, that's why I played both mass effects with a male Shepard. I just can't imagine Shepard being a woman, and no its not because I believe that a woman can't save the universe :p

I am the only girl in my Star Trek Online Fleet, and I posed the same question to the other members. Their answers were pretty much 'they don't like staring at man ass for hours on end', which I can accept.

Me, I play either. In WoW, I'm a female character because the male dimensions resemble triangular slabs of testosterone and are just plain stupid.

On Star Trek Online, it seems most players are men so most characters are females, so I stick to male characters to fly the flag for the opposite genre. I've also discovered there're more clothing options for females, so that could also be a pull factor perhaps.

Usually the female character in an RPG (Mass Effect, for example) has a far superior voice actor than the male character.

I also don't want to play as some big, macho, stereotypical manchild that is in every game ever. Hell, when I play something like...Samurai Warriors, for example, I tend to play as Ranmaru because he isn't a stereotype...well, he is, but a rarer one than someone like, say...Commander Shepherd.

Otherwise, I think it just has to do with the fact that female characters are generally cooler than male ones, with rare exceptions. Auron from FFX would be my example. :3

I don't. I always play as a male character. I am a man, therefor I play as one in a game.

Edit: I'm aware my avatar is a girl :p Doesn't change the fact that I always play as a dude. I just like to look at scene girls :D
Whats the difference between a scene, emo, and goth girl?

I just dont see the differences...

I'll sometimes roll with a female character just for the hell of it. Playing a dude is nice and all, but sometimes a change is in order.

In single player games I usually go for the female characters E.g Fallout, Mass Effect, Pokemon...

I like the idea of my badass female character kicking some butt and killing everyone around them, so my characters are almost always evil if allowed. Muahahaha!

Other than that, unique NPC options, aesthetically better looking, and why the hell not.

A summary of responses by category!

The guy who just doesn't care (or wants to look cool): Because I can!

The philosopher: because the ability to step into the shoes of the opposite gender offers an experience otherwise missed.

The artist: By seeing the world through the eyes of another gender the story of the game can change in many ways, some drastic, others subtle.

The artiste: inflated due to ego, deleted due to length

The psychologist: It's interesting to see how player's actions change depending on the character they are playing. It also results in an interesting view on how closely the player connects with one character or another.
Oh, wait, MOMMY ISSUES!

The guy who does not want to be seen as gay: I don't want to stare at a guy's ass for 40 hours.

The guy: 'Cause I can see her (nekkid/in sexy clothes/scantly clad)!

The fanboy: 'Cause I wanna make a (insert female character name here.)

The Bioware player: Because the dialogue and plot actions (and in some cases available quests) change depending on your character's gender.

The WoW player: Because people treat you differently depending on your gender.

The G.I.R.L.: (Because its funny to see people's faces when they find out!)/(Because I like free stuff!)

The gamer: The stats are different.

Personally, when I play as a girl, I like to do it for the perspective thing, and because it actually does change the way I play.

And off topic: I think it might actually be interesting to see a game where the character's gender really didn't matter and wasn't shown, at least until the very end (I know that's been done with Metroid, but stick with me here...) AND, when the final reveal was done, the actions in game ultimately decide what the character looks like when it is revealed, including the gender. I think it would be interesting to see done, at least once, as well as interesting to see what people most often end up as (provided they don't use an FAQ).

The eye-candy factor certainly plays a role in this, much of the time. That aside, in a single-player game a strongly-written female character is as enjoyable as an equally well-written male character.

As for RPGs that give the male/female option, be it an MMO or otherwise, for those of us who have the little wannabe-writer imp somewhere in our brains we like to think we can also write female characters, instead of the typical male-relatable ones.

Or at least that's what I do.
I'm actually currently writing the script for a game with a female lead and it's very challenging but as I mentioned earlier I tend to to have an easier time relating to female characters than uber-macho muscle-y dudes.

I play as a male first and then female for my second playthrough. Although for Mass Effect 2, I ported over my female Shepard because male Shepard's voice annoys me.

What if you could create a scene chick character? huh, what then? Anyway i will sometimes play as a chick even though I'm a guy cause I'd rather look at that then some dude's butt for however many hours it takes. Especially when it doesn't affect gameplay at all (like Oblivion for instance)

Btw I totally approve of your profile pic in every way

Because humans are capable of making choices. And we like using that ability. That's why we sometimes play as robots.

Why do some women like playing as male characters?
Because it's not about "like". It's about "why the fuck not?"
Basically What He said! :D
