Why do people let themselves get trolled?
I've been watching Trollarch on youtube which is a channel dedicated to trolling Call of Duty players.
My question is.. why do people let themselves get trolled like that?

Why don't they just quit the game, and leave?
There's plenty of videos of 1v1 with headshots only, and the other player doesn't know about it. So the person rages, and calls him a hacker, and continually flips out. There's a lot of other things they do to troll CoD players but the 1v1 thing must be the most funniest thing I ever seen since you could always just quit the game.

I honestly think trollers are in the right if they get a re-action from you. If you don't give them a re-action they don't troll you. Simple as that.

How can anyone be.. that.. I don't wanna be mean here, but.. You know?

Ha, trolling the masses of 12-year olds and manchildren on COD is like shooting fish in a barrel. They are just too socially inept to understand how to control themselves in such a situation. They already scream 'fucking ******' at anyone who so much as kills them too many times, they are just as inclined to react the same when being trolled in this manner.

Some people are just dumb. Best not to dwell on this whole thing too much.

Stupidity and/or emotions. Even a troll baby can make a stupid and emotional person rage. YOu know there are feeding the troll arguments and they are right, as long as you giving him attention he has already succeeded.
also what is this channel you talk about.

Teenagers, the most hormonal and emotional period of a persons life, not much of an improvement from 12 year olds if you ask me!

But it all ties back to self-control and intelligence, the former is obvious enough the latter is so that you actually realize that they're trying to troll you so that you can react appropriately such as muting them or leaving the game.

CoD is popular with a certain set of people.

The not very mature or bright ... not all players are like this but we all know that some of CoD's fans are absolute idiots.

These folk fly into fits of rage when people kill them so it only stands to reason that a troll worth his salt would be able to wind them up.

The same way people get wound up in real life. If you notice somebody dislikes something - you spot the little wound and you dig your thumb. Some people just get wound up way too easily.

The people that YouTubers troll on Call of Duty already take things too seriously, and are mad and aggressive even before the trolling actually begins. All the trolls have to do is make a little push, and the trollees do the rest themselves, which let's the trolls get to sing this wonderful song:

Because the ones that did leave didn't make the video? If you're making a channel about how good a troll you are you're not going to include much footage of the times you didn't get a rise out of people.

That and there are always people who take themselves (and by extension their games) wwaaayyyy too seriously. I spend a fair bit of time playing CoD and in nearly every lobby you're going to get one hyper-competitive player who worships their K/D ratio and reacts to any of their deaths like it was some kind of personal insult. These people are ripe for winding up.

You don't even have to be trying with those people, I've set them off just by playing the game and killing them a couple times.

Admittedly as soon as they get angry with me I focus all of my attention on pissing them off without actually resorting to being an ass myself. (Basically I just kill them in increasingly more humiliating ways)

I suppose it basically comes down to these people simply not being very bright. And who knows? Perhaps they let themselves get suckered in because a small part of them wants to start yelling at another person. Some people out there are just flat out immature and go looking for opportunities to start yelling obscenities about someone else's mom.

I think we've all met these kinds of people before.

While I do believe in not feeding trolls, I would still never say trolling is the fault of those that fall victim to it.

This. Trolling is a numbers game. Not everyone gets tricked into reacting. But those aren't remembered or celebrated. Those are highlights reels. If you're griefing, most people quit. If you're an ass to people, most people don't talk to you.

The reason people "Get Trolled"?

Two big ones:

1) They think the troll is sincere. In discussions, if you say something simple and obviously wrong, you'll get masses of angry responses. They think you actually mean it.

2) They think they can get you. They think there's one clever remark, one trick, or one absolute pwnage which will make the troll upset. It won't. Trolls are wasting your time, and as such, know their time is worthless. Trying to reason with them, insult them, or do anything, doesn't work.

I do find it amusing that some people have taken this annectdote as some sort of indication about the minds of other gamers. The escapist isn't exactly immune to being trolled. In fact, being a well moderated site, full of earnest people who are usually honest about their opinions, it's a prime target.

I like how this has very quickly become a thread of people trolling CoD in general.

People let themselves get trolled because... Most people don't. Seriously. If you are getting trolled, and you know it, most people just leave. Sometimes you don't because it feels pathetic to do so. But most people will.

You get skewed statistics because only the funny stories of trolling get heard. You hear more "And liek, I teabagged him for 32 hours strait and he raged so much that his face fell off into his lap and he shat himself" then "And after I killed him for the 3rd time he left" because the first story is funny, the second is not (Hyperbole. Its awesome.)

I have successfully trolled in an RTS for a strait 6 hours once. 7 different people. At the same time. The reason they stuck around was simple "WE CAN BEAT HIM. THERE ARE 7 OF US AND ONE OF HIM." It went on and on, until I got bored and annihilated them all with nukes. That can play into why people "Let" themselves get trolled. The rage builds up and you don't want to give in, you end up thinking that giving in is worse then getting trolled.

(Above troll story comes from Rise of Nations, for the record. Due to random maps being helpful I ended up alone on an island and everyone else was on the mainland. For the first 2 hours I sat around, watching them dick each other and advancing. I teched up, they didn't. Tech matters. A lot.)

But when I join a game and I get trolled to heaven and back again by players a lot better then me? I just give up and try again later. I won't let myself get trolled any more. Back in the days of WoW if a trollteam was dicking us in a BG I would just /afk and go and farm till the timer disappeared. Beats getting trolled.

Indeed. The more clever and rational, and able, a person thinks they are, the easier they are to troll. So many think they can get the last word in, and that'll ruin the trolls day. "Sure that guys wallhacking, but I can get just one kill, that'll show him." "Sure that guys being an ass, but if I point out that his being an ass doesn't make him a superior being, that'll show him."

Not sure, but i made some guy go mental at me on voice the other day in dota 2 wish i recorded it.

Was screaming down the mic at me you gay ****** homo go die, so i started flirting with him over mic, oooh i love your voice 'insert player name here' i bet your a big strong man that could keep me warm at night', he screams more now getting really angry. I continue 'awww come on honey, are you sure you don't like another man coming on to you?, you have such a beutifal voice, so firm and commanding, makes me hot under the collar if you know what i mean'

The last sentance was the combo breaker all i got was 2 minutes of screaming i mean screaming and death threats, he then d/c from the game.

Me laughing my tits off at him down my mic probably didn't help xD

My wig i think i made him feel uncomfortable and got him angry, maybe he will be a bit more hesitant to call people a ****** on voice :]

Reason he started all this was i kept reporting middle lane missing, you know being helpful to try and help other players getting ganked! 'care succubus mia, etc.'

One of the many reasons I mute everybody on Xbox Live as well as Steam (save for actual friends).

Sweet silence.
