Trolling, in my experience, is not about attention--it's about control, and it's intoxicating.

The reason people get trolled is because people aren't exactly the rational, reasonable beings for which they mistake themselves. If they were, mathematics would be second nature to everyone, and that's clearly not the case. No, most people, as my friend liked to say, are dumber than an empty box of hair. One doesn't exactly have to look far to find an article explaining that people react first, and think second. Once you understand all of this, exploiting their animal nature isn't all that difficult.

Two big ones:

1) They think the troll is sincere. In discussions, if you say something simple and obviously wrong, you'll get masses of angry responses. They think you actually mean it.

2) They think they can get you. They think there's one clever remark, one trick, or one absolute pwnage which will make the troll upset. It won't. Trolls are wasting your time, and as such, know their time is worthless. Trying to reason with them, insult them, or do anything, doesn't work.
This, a thousand times this. You either say something that evokes an emotional response and batter away at the raw spot for fun and profit, or you let them ensnare themselves with their impetuosity. People are often so eager to put down disagreers like the wrong-minded dogs that they are, that they will happily throw themselves into even the most obvious traps without pause.

I've been watching Trollarch on youtube which is a channel dedicated to trolling Call of Duty players.
My question is.. why do people let themselves get trolled like that?

Why don't they just quit the game, and leave?
There's plenty of videos of 1v1 with headshots only, and the other player doesn't know about it. So the person rages, and calls him a hacker, and continually flips out. There's a lot of other things they do to troll CoD players but the 1v1 thing must be the most funniest thing I ever seen since you could always just quit the game.

I honestly think trollers are in the right if they get a re-action from you. If you don't give them a re-action they don't troll you. Simple as that.

How can anyone be.. that.. I don't wanna be mean here, but.. You know?
The biggest problem here is that you don't really need to troll CoD fans to get those reactions.

I know my playtime is pretty limited (as I don't like FPS in the first place), but it didn't take long to see some hiLARIOUS results.

Keep in mind, also, I'm not that good (in part because, you know, I don't play), so some of the reactions are pretty hilarious in themselves. I've been accused of hacking and cheating and a ton of other things while I had a K/D ratio of like .7. Yeah. I die a lot. I'm a liability to my team. And if I get one or two kills, Cod Fans start screaming at me like I sent them a picture of me personally strangling all their childhood pets.

At this point, I'm not sure there's even any point to trolling the CoD community.

Ah welcome to humanity. There a lot of stupid people in this world, but honestly, would the world be as fun, probably not. True, we could do with less of them but there you go.

I guess I I aimed the conversation too much on the CoD community, It was a suppose to be a general question.
The ending to your paragraph made me laugh so hard..

Rational thought doesn't seem to be something exercised very often on the internet. Even the classic "That Zelda's a cool guy, he swings his sword and doesn't afraid of anything" or "Why is Zelda always saving the princess" will still get rises out of people in WoW. Or "Is Metroid's gun attached to his arm or his suit?" It's funny, really, since they're some of the oldest tricks in the book.

Anyway, it's been answered. A really good troll will make people question whether they're being trolled or not, and sometimes it can just be amusing to see what they have to say or how far they'll take things. Sometimes people just get angry because of one little comment and after that it's all downhill.

Minnasotaburns makes a career out of this on youtube, mostly doing the 1v1 headshot only thing as well as pretending to be XBL enforcement to parents who are ignorant about the internet at larage as well as XBL (he usually does this to kids who are cheating in some way)

I admittedly got distracted by it. I had planned to start with COD and segue into the notion of people as emotional creatures first and rational ones second. Or possibly third. The point being that there is a theory of human behaviour that says just that.

The recent Escapist article about trolls ruining everything is based off a study that goes along with just that sort of thinking. Humans are, by nature, emotionally driven. However, we tend to view our own emotional investments as rational and others as strange. for example, while I don't condemn football fans, I don't get any excitement out of the game. That's fine. I get more invested in RPGs, and what my 9th level half-elf can pull off, or whatever. I'd rather read a book than watch people eat bugs or...Live in Jersey *shudder* (I kid the people of New Jersey).

It's a bias of self interest, really.

CoD does make a decent example, though, because look at how invested people get. They probably shouldn't, but if I can illicit the same reaction as a troll just by playing in an only marginally competent fashion, then they're definitely being emotional first and reasonable...Well, dead last, probably. Not that they're the pinnacle of the human race or anything, but again, have you seen sports fans who scream at the screen like the players can hear them?

Anyway, that;s what I was going to say before my attention span died.

I'm just kinda shocked that since trolling is so popular to the point tried banning (Or succeed? I don't know. I didn't follow it.) it, and making it a state law. There's so many videos/posts/etc of it. That people just do not realize it faster. Lol.
