Why DO people hate Nickelback?

It's because they are Canadian, people have an irrational fear of Canadians. They are too quiet and generally don't cause a lot of trouble.

Worse than freakin' Linkin Park, and that's something.
Got it in one, but no, nothing is worse than Linkin Park.

I personally like Nickelback, but that has nothing to do with why I don't get all the hate. My question is, why do people hate Nickelback so much when the Black Eyed Peas still insist on existing?

Let's say you're at a big dinner party, and the host asks you what you thought of dessert. "The lemon bars? They were pretty good," you reply. To tell the truth the lemon bars were okay, but nothing special. However you want to at least be nice.
"Oh, I'm so glad you liked them! I'll give you the recie!" Your host is over the moon with happiness.
The next day, they stop by your house before you leave for work.
"Hi! I just had some of those lemon bars left over from the party, and since you liked them so much I thought you'd want some more."
They stop by during your lunch break.
"I bet you brought some of those lemon bars with you, huh? Aren't they the BEST?"
Pretty soon you realize this isn't going to stop. Every chance they get they're dropping off another batch, or calling you and asking you if you'd tried to make your own yet. They want you to come over and help make some for another party. It never stops until you finally snap, and tell them you're sick of the lemon bars.
"But you love them! They were your favorite part of the dinner party!"

That's the way television and radio treat music. 24 hour force-feeding of whatever they want you to buy.
"This band is the greatest! You love them! You've got to listen to their single seventeen times a day! Watch their videos! Buy their posters! T-shirts! They're in commercials and movies! Love them! LOVE THEM!"

Nickelback probably don't deserve as much hate as they receive. On the other hand, they probably don't deserve as much fame either. So they're really just paying the price for the deal they made with the devil.

I haven't listened to a lot of Nickelback; but the impression I'm getting is that of douchey fratboy rock. And all their songs appear to be extremely similar from what I hear.

This in itself isn't that bad, but when they are as popular as they are, that's pretty enraging.

Because they are popular.

As far as rock bands go, they aren't even bad. The people telling you "blah blah blah mediocrity." are just saying that so that they can hate on them while not sounding AS stupid as the people with no reason.

Bottom line is that they are NOT bad, and they are NOT (overly) mediocre. People just like to feel superior by defacing something that is popular.

This video pretty much sums up what I don't like, plus the fact that every song they've put out in the last 4 years has been either "Lets get drunk/fucked up" or "Lets have tons of sex" and it's really damn tiresome.

So their sound is completely indistinguishable yet all their songs sound the same. That's like saying you see the invisible man everywhere.

OT: I don't think they're that horrible. Personally I prefer to get my hate on for pop music.

Eveything you've just stated is an opinion, along with slating other people's opinions.

Good job.

Isn't Nickelback pretty much the only rock band left that actually gets any mainstream attention? And by "rock band" I mean "group of four or five people who both sing and play guitars." 99% of what's on the radio nowadays is either pop, R&B, or some form of rap or hip-hop. Naturally if you've somehow managed to outlast the entire rest of your genre, you're pretty much expected to be the best thing that genre has ever produced. And Nickelback is not. If it weren't for that, most people probably wouldn't even notice them and keep on listening to the good bands that would actually exist in such a scenario.

I should write to Todd in the Shadows and ask him to review something of theirs sometime. I don't listen to the radio anymore and I'm not in the mood to hunt down some random song from some random band I'm told I won't even like just to find out whether they're right or not. Todd's videos have allowed me to observe popular music from a safe distance through a thick screen of cynicism.

Not quite.

Their music sounds no different to all the other generic rock crap out there, and their songs are so similiar to each other, that it's hard to tell where one track ends and the other begins.

Because they are good honest trashy pop. There not some trash masquerading under the cover of being a half-hearted rock band?

Why listen to Nickelback when you could just listen to the infinitely better 3 Doors Down?

Oh yes I did

People hate mainstream man.

I for one don't hate Nickelback, I just preferred them when they were more of a grunge band.

Their album "The State" is the main one I refer to, that and "Curb". Here are some links!

"nickleback" is actually a canadian word; it translates directly into "talentless hack".

i can't say anything that hasn't already been said, but i can reiterate all the important things.

-all they're songs are the same. they don't sound they same, they are the same. it has been proven.

-they're music sucks.

-the fact that they are popular in the main stream just adds insult to injury. not only does the world really like a band, they really like a terrible band. and the rest of us have to associate with that population by proxy, which makes us look terrible as well. nickleback is making everyone look bad; some by choice, some by association. that's not fair to anyone.

-nickelback is like that kid in high school who has a strong, edgy, outer appearance. the problem is that it's literally not fooling anyone (well, any reasonable individual at least). you know that if kicked in the shins, said individual would keel over and give us his best pro soccer impersonation, make all sort of empty threats, crying, and possibly messing himself just to really sell it. many of the nickleback songs i have been forced to listen to are exactly this: a facade. "rock star" is the only one i can think of off the top of my head.

-to top it off, legitimately good music will get passed up by millions because they are so engrossed with this (and other) meritocracy; i think that's a pain we can all share.

The only one of their songs I've heard is Rockstar, which I quite like actually (love the vocals). And it wasn't overplayed over here. So... I guess I don't hate them?
