I think it's something to do with how successful they are despite their (in my opinion) phenomenal mediocrity.
Couldn't agree more, they're trying to create something that looks new by combining aspects of already well established genres such as grunge, post-grunge, and modern hard rock. Its a simple formula for bands that want to make as much money as possible while performing at the level of a high school jam band. It's ridiculous

Because people like to hate on something that is popular.

See Call of Duty, Halo, etc.

They're - contraction of they are
Their - possessive adjective
There - adverb of place

You're - contraction of you are
Your - possessive adjective

What the hell people!? Are you all in third grade? 'Cause people under 13 aren't supposed to be on these forums.

I will stay maintain that the Santana crossover is awesome though.
Santana actually recorded that songs twice - once with Alex Band (The Calling), once with Chad Kroeger. We always speculated it was because Alex Band is a prettier man which was helpful for the music video. Apparently though:

When Arista wanted to release the single in the summer of 2003, Roadrunner Records, the record label for Nickelback, refused permission citing concerns that Kroeger appearing on a "high-profile single" would compromise the excitement over Nickelback's fall 2003 release The Long Road and hurt the Nickelback album sales. Kroeger recommended Band, another BMG artist, to re-record the song's vocals for single release. The Alex Band version omits the guitar instrumental bridge, and was also included on Ultimate Santana.

I beleive this to be a condradction
In what way do you find my statement contradictory?
You essentially said 'Well, I think that most people who think Nickelback sucks are Jealous. But I think they suck'

Well, I didn't mean it that way. I meant I think their their musical-quality/success ratio defies logic.

According to a check of Youtube they sound the same as every rock-country band, so I have no idea why everyone would consider them worse. Could someone post something that is better and the same genre so I can compare?
As discussed above, for me (and I expect quite a lot of others) it's not just their sound because you're right, their sound is bland modern rock that in its own right isn't really any better or worse than any number of other bland rock bands.

What I think separates Nickelback from the others and fuels the hatred is their attitude. Videos like the Portugal one above clearly show that they've bought their own PR hook, line and sinker: in their minds, if you don't like Nickelback then you don't like rock music, period. It's "rockstar" egotism of the worst kind from a band that's mediocre in pretty much every sense.

I personally like Nickelback, but that has nothing to do with why I don't get all the hate. My question is, why do people hate Nickelback so much when the Black Eyed Peas still insist on existing?
Because they are 2000 and late.

This video pretty much sums up what I don't like, plus the fact that every song they've put out in the last 4 years has been either "Lets get drunk/fucked up" or "Lets have tons of sex" and it's really damn tiresome.
I was going to post this but you very much so beat me to it.

Psh, Creed was bland and wildly successful way before Nickleback made it cool. Creed paved the way for Nickleback.

You know why I hate them? Because they're trying to cram the "we're rock stars" thing down everyone's throats. Kinda like the "we're pirates" on the south park episode whale whores.

They're making music (or rather producing the same song over and over) not because they want to make music but so that they can call themselves "rock stars". Or at least that's how it comes off to me. Other pop/R&B/country acts may suck as hard as nickelback but at least they're not trying to be rock stars or going round saying we're rock stars. On the other side of the coin Gene Simmons and others like him can go round stating they're a rock star without drawing too much hate because they legitimately are.

I feel the same level of hatred towards any middle of the road pop or other popular music genre acts start claiming to be rock or that they're rock stars.

Y'know, I just watched an episode of The Big Picture that put something into words that I've felt for awhile - a lot of people on the internet are essentially extremists of opinion. There's no room for moderate opinions because others seem to translate leaning slightly towards one way or the other as 'THIS IS THE BEST THING EVAR' or 'THIS SUX OMG MY EARS BLEED'. I don't think most people really HATE Nickelback. Not like them, sure, maybe even be annoyed by them, but I really don't hear anything about them that's worthy of genuine hate.

But no, this is the internet, where agreeing with one side makes you wish death upon the other and where moderate, measured opinions don't count. Bah.

I don't hate them, in fact, I rather enjoyed Far Away. To me they're just like any other band that gets popular.
I just hope the ItaloBrothers will eventually reach their moment of well deserved fame.

I can understand why; they're an acquired taste, the songs are SIMILAR (not the exact same), and they're successful. I like them quite a bit myself. However, here are some things I need to address;

- There songs ARE NOT ALL THE F***ING SAME! It makes me wonder if anybody actually sat down for longer than 10 minutes and listened to more than 2 of their songs in a row. I don't particularly like Heavy Metal yet even I can come to logical conclusion that not every Metallica song is exactly the same. If anybody listens to 2 different songs from Nickelback in a row and can't tell ANY difference, they're not paying attention or they have brain damage. I'm sorry, but that's the only reasons I can come up with.

- Lyrics could definitely use some work, I won't deny that, but they have their moments. Some of the lyrics in Saving Me, Someday, and How You Remind Me, and Side of a Bullet are actually quite well thought-out.

- The jealousy has to end. Seriously, we know it's unfortunate that a potentially 'meh' band is doing better than a band you think is great. Get over it. I rarely hear people complain about Tom Cruise's undeserved popularity or how "Insert Generic TV drama here" is taking attention away from "Insert under-appreciated show here". Nickelback isn't going to raise their hands up and transfer their funds to your fav band, and you're not going to "convert" NB fans to "the light" by blabbering on about your fav band. If you keeping being bitter like that than progress in life will fail indeed. Just like what you like and be done with it.

/end rant

Also, one of the main attractions in Nickelback for me are the general rhythm/flow of the songs and the solos. Just my two cents.

They're the stereotypical whiny rock band with no real talent that surprisingly sells millions of records.

It's like Creed...everyone hates them and nobody knows why their so popular

Because they are popular.

As far as rock bands go, they aren't even bad. The people telling you "blah blah blah mediocrity." are just saying that so that they can hate on them while not sounding AS stupid as the people with no reason.

Bottom line is that they are NOT bad, and they are NOT (overly) mediocre. People just like to feel superior by defacing something that is popular.

Eveything you've just stated is an opinion, along with slating other people's opinions.

Good job.
I don't have the patience to argue with people who go around saying that the things I state are my opinion. Of course they are. You come up with a good reason as to why Nickleback is a BAD band (as if it is actually possible for a band to be bad) and THEN we can have a conversation about this topic.

(also before you go pointing out that Im arguing with you right now, I shall not be returning to this thread. I don't even know why I came here in the first place. Obvious flame war is obvious.)

Good job. (Was this last part really necessary?)

Well apparently, people aren't allowed to hate on something because they generally believe it to be mediocre and not deserving of the attention it recieves.

It has nothing to do with feeling superior.

Some people will, of course, but to generalise all people who hate something as people with a superiority complex?

Please.

I ushered for one of their concerts once and was pretty close to the front row. I saw a fan hand something to Chad Cro-howeveryouspellhislastname and he took the object, lit it, and started smoking it. I could tell from the shape of it and the fact that it was completely white that it was a roll of mary jane.

Thing is, I do find some of their songs to actually be pretty good. But the bandmates themselves? They're kinda jerkasses.

There music is incredibly mediocre, there lyrics deal with sex and drinking that's all. how many times can you repeat the same two themes in a CD? and sadly every party i have gone to repeats the same couple of songs "Rockstar" and "Animals" etc and the lead singer declared Nickleback to be a metal band WTF!
