As someone who mildly tolerates SOME of their music and has one or two of their tracks on her gaming playlist they are alright. I don't believe that they deserve as much fame as they've gotten. Most of their songs are the same shite spouted over and over it is coincidentally why I don't listen to the radio anymore. After this weekend I'm finally taking "Rockstar" out of my itunes library(ironically it is only there because I have a friend who wants the track because he likes the song). There is so much better music in the world than the mainstream bullshite that gets shoved down everyone's throats and sadly most people won't get to hear it. Anyone who says that they are the best band in the world I will sit down at my laptop and start playing bands that they've never heard of and blow their mind with my collection of over 8k songs. which barely puts a dent into the amount of cds I have.

This video pretty much sums up what I don't like, plus the fact that every song they've put out in the last 4 years has been either "Lets get drunk/fucked up" or "Lets have tons of sex" and it's really damn tiresome.
Ow, my mind. It has been blown. I never thought they really sounded THAT same-y in their songs but I listened to that video with headphones on and it kinda fucked with my head for a minute.

OT: I don't think that Nickleback is terrible. I would be lying if I said I didn't like some of their songs. But then again I could also be in a ridiculous minority seeing as how I also like Linkin Park a lot more than everyone else seems to on these forums...

I don't hate them, in fact, when I was younger I used to like them. There are a couple of good riffs they had, but by and large they're just a bit average. They're like a heavier, more canadian Coldplay. Musical cardboard. If I wanted to listen to interesting contemporary rock there are bands like Stone Sour or Alter Bridge around.

Okay, this was prompted by the latest episode of Feed Dump, but it's a question I've been wondering for a long time now.

People are entitled to their opinions and some things induce outright hatred, fine. But there seems to be a particularly keen hatred for Nickelback, so I assume there must be a reason or interconnected set of reasons.

I'm approaching this as a fan of them, I don't mind admitting that. They don't need my defence so I'm not here to have an argument with someone. Just curious as to why the have their own strain of visceral dislike...

because they are bland, boring, and have absolutely nothing special to offer music. this would be serviceable if their songwriting was any good, but it's just cheese all the way through. unexciting music coupled with piss poor song writing is why people hate them.

I like them. Mostly the older stuff, but some of the newer music is pretty endearing for some reason. Then again, I don't take them seriously, so I'm more able to accept it for what it is for me personally; Samey, but decent music.

It's a matter of opinion.

I listened to the videos playing their songs on either side...and they're pretty similar. A lot of the ques are the same, timing, and etc, however, I'm still very able to distinguish between songs. That might be due to having listened to them quite a bit, but I digress. I partly think this is intrinsic to most, if not all bands out there now. They develop a particular sound and that sort of becomes their musical identity.

I have an eclectic musical taste ranging from musicals and sonatas to screaming metal, pop, jpop, and industrial/trance...etc, etc, etc.

So, yeah. They're fine with me. Also, Creed is good as is Linkin Park. I have zero problem with the "mainstream" nonsense. I listen to whatever I find enjoyable.

I think it probably has something to do with personal tastes. Maybe, just maybe, a majority of people don't like their music, BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THEIR MUSIC.

Because they're bad.

OT: I don't much like them, and it's true that all (or at least almost all) of their songs follow the same formula, but I get the impression that people mostly hate them because they're popular. I only say this because the people who hate them most don't seem to have ever actually listen to many of their songs. They've heard one or two that they barely recollect, and then feel comfortable making broad statements about their talent overall. Doesn't make sense.

I don't really understand it myself, the "their songs sound the same" just isn't really a valid argument for me, also, no one has ever given me an example of how they sound bad people just say things like "His singing is bad" but don't specify. The worst part in my in my opinion is how the ratio of how bad they are to how much hate they get is so huge compared to most mainstream bands/singers.
I'd say all their songs sound the same is a reasonable argument, to expand on that point the general opinion is once you've listened to two songs (a fast one and a slow one), you've pretty much listened to their whole catalogue, they've never tried to expand their sound or experiment with new stuff, it's all cookie cutter stuff really. There's loads of videos out there with two songs playing and you really can't distinguish between them.

Sounding bad is a rather subjective argument, to me it sounds bad, to you it sounds good because we have different tastes. I could present you with any nickleback song and explain why I think it was bad, wheras you would like the bits I present to you, leading to you not thinking people can show you an example. To them it's an example, to you it's reinforcing your argument. Neither of you is ever going to change your opinions until you either grow bored of them (I've done it with plenty of bands) and stop liking them, or the hater lets their standards slide.

On the singing front, same again, and if I think he sings bad, it would apply across their whole discography, as opposed to a specific section I don't know why I would have to show an example here you don't like his singing, you don't like his singing, not much more too it. Not quite sure what you're going with that to be honest.

I'd say the reason they get more hate is because they're posers, trying extremely hard to be rock n roll, while churning out the same mainstream friendly rubbish. If you're Rock n Roll, you're rock n roll and you don't need to try to be something you're not. Look at Lemmy from Motorhead, to him its just all about the music, nothing more and nothing less, he gets up there to play some rocking tunes and have a great time, he does whatever he wants and doesn't attempt to appeal to certain demographics, to him it's just "if it sounds great to me, great, if other people like it, they'll listen to it"

It's different to actual pop rock and wuss rock in the sense that the "musicians" aren't trying to be rock and roll, granted it's soulless crap but they're not trying to act as if they're in with the actual subculture. Pretty much any subculture will eat posers alive, it's an impossible market to crack with a lab grown band as they just get spotted a mile off. You're never going to see a lab grown band get into a subculture as it's not just something to listen to like mainstream music, which most people are quite happy to just discard next time the next chart topping lab grown single comes along, for a lot of subcultures the music is a big part of who they are and will stay loyal to a band forever. No ones going to remember Justin Bieber a few years from now, heck most people can't even remember "the next big thing" from X factor last year.

Well that wall of text appeared from nowhere, I only meant to make a quick point ><

For the most part I'm happy to just ignore them the same as thousands of other horrible bands - there's a whole world of good music out there and I don't see much point in wasting time on bands like Nickelback.

BUT, since the question has been asked, I think what really brings out the hatred in people though is how Nickelback are such an incredibly bland, uninteresting and mediocre band, in every possible way, and yet they act as though they're god's gift to rock music.

Anywho, a little present for all the haters:

(pretty sure it's not a rock FWIW - almost certainly a plastic bottle)

'This Afternoon' was a refreshing song for them, pulling out of sex, drugs, party ect.

Then again people consider that song country, which is also crap to everyone who isn't apparently a

"Stars and Bars loving, beer drinking, hillbilly"
-Words of many peers and music critics, though not myself.

According to a check of Youtube they sound the same as every rock-country band, so I have no idea why everyone would consider them worse. Could someone post something that is better and the same genre so I can compare?

On a worse note, my old homeroom teacher used to play this before he got fired (sexual harassment charges, never did hear if he was actually guilty or not) and killed himself, so that's what this song reminds me of.

I don't mind them. They are not my favorite band of all time but I grew up with Nickelback so I don't mind their music.

I love Nickelback. I don't know why others don't but it doesn't entirely bother me. It's not like it's gonna stop their music. There's not nearly enough non fans to have a dent there. So I never have to worry about anyone chasing away one of my loved bands.

But speaking of bands people hate, I've recently seen hatred over Coldplay. That surprised me.
