so, i've been trying to figure htis out for a while about why people think the mass effect trilogy and dragon age 1 were such great games. whennever i think about them i think they have bad locations that don't feel as epic as they're trying to be made out, an impenetrable story with many, many plot holes, bad writing where alot of the background is in the pause menu rather than weaved into the story, akward conversation options and bland, boring gameplay.

i understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if you enjoyed all of biowares games then good for you, but it seems EVERYONE thinks bioware is one of the greatest game makers of all time

Likeable characters. Challenge and passable or better gameplay. Interesting stories. Interactive and makes you think.

As you said, it is just opinion, but I found the Mass Effect games to have a great balance between story and game play, which is something that is rare today. To me the story is just great in those games, the best I've seen.

For the record, I'm not commenting on the Dragon Age games, I don't play fantasy games so I know nothing about it.

It's because they're good. As you say everyone deserves there own opinion but lots of people like them because they're good games set in a rich universe with great characters.

see, i'm seeing alot of people claim interesting stories, but the mass effect games have rather flawed stories, since the entire of mass effect 2 is just being rail roaded, where you work with cerberus because you can't work with the alliance, you can't work with the alliance because you're working with cerberus. and is filled with plot holes, the first is about 10 minutes into the game where a terrorist organization manages to make a better ship than the entire allience could.

and hta characters aren't really that great, overlooking the fact that two of them (miranda and hte justicar) are shamelessly there for sex appeal, alot of them don't actually come in use in the big mission. why did you need 2 biotics experts if you only need one? why not bring more weapon experts?

This doesnt really sound anything like a Bioware game. I am not a big Bioware guy, but writting, epicness feelings, conversations, gameplay, writting and story is what bioware games are most known for. It is alright if you don't like Bioware, but I think much of what your saying is biast.

Its like saying Crysis 2 looks ugly. I may not like the game, but the game looks amazing, and it has very good and intense gameplay

Congratulations on making a thread guaranteed to piss people off.

As for why I like Bioware games so much... well, because I find the experience of playing them enjoyable in a variety of ways. Simple as that. And yes, I think they are easily among the best developers in the business.

I suppose I could give you the blow-by-blow fan-wank version, but I don't see why I should go to that effort to justify my preferences. It would probably make for rather cringe-inducing reading anyway.

I personally really enjoyed the story of Mass Effect 2 I thought it was a nice contrast to being backed by the council and the military and there was the extra plotline of what Cerberus' motives were.

It does have interesting characters in the form of Jack, Joker, Grunt, Garrus, Mordin. They outweighth the blandness of Jacob and Miranda in my eyes. Especially Joker I find him one of my favourite games characters of all time and I think he should get his own SHMUP game.

Dragon Age Origins was an amazing game and the characters actually elicited an emotional response from most players. The environments were exciting and rich like the werewolf temple and the Temple of Sacred Ashes. Hell even the opening area of Ostogar felt epic.

You are also forgetting about games such as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale which by their own admission heavily influenced Blizzard to make WOW. There is also KOTOR and Jade Empire which are aged but still excellent games.

They are really good games developers and although I was let down by DA2 I will excuse them one average game out of many excellent ones.

This is going to sound really stupidly simple, but I find their games are just really fun to play. For me, with Mass Effect it was largely due to the really deep universe they constructed for it and for KOTOR, it was that they created a a whole other side to the Star Wars universe which the 21st century George Lucas couldn't have done; both games had really enjoyable storylines, interesting characters and settings. Bioware creates games I enjoy; that's about all I can say really.

Bioware is solid. Their writing is above-average, their gameplay is above-average, and their production values are very good. You know what you're getting with a Bioware game* and what you're getting is pretty good.

*DA2 was a fluke, IMO.

Well they are serving an unserved market. I mean really, who else in the ENG market makes dating sims?

I really don't see how the stories are flawed or where the plot holes are. You're working with Cerberus because they're doing something about the abductions. You aren't working with the Alliance because they're not. Also the Normandy SR-2 isn't really better. It just has more already available technology tacked onto the original design. Also the alliance has to worry about an entire species whereas cerberus are free to sink all their money into making one ship.

Story mainly. They are not the best at game play mechanics but when it comes down to story and characters they are great.

They are good with atmosphere. Gosh how awesome was the beginning of KOTOR II? It had that mysterious, alone feeling about it. I just replayed that part too.

Mass Effect one didn't have such problems, and I for one preferred the gameplay in the first game... but I played it on PC. I couldn't even fathom trying to control that with thumbsticks.

...when people talk about the characterization being great, they're not talking about combat roles or sex appeal. Verisimilitude in backstories and emotional content in dialog are what they refer to.

Also, Baldur's Gate. All arguments against that statement are automatically invalid.
