People would pay good money for a "troll killer" program now that is innovation.

To answer the question no I leave them alone with their thumb up their asses.

People gain enjoyment from controversy. That's why racist jokes and Helen Keller jokes exist in the modern day. I know I enjoy a well-produced controversial joke for the irony that we all know it's inappropriate.

Trolling is just a different way to portray that idea. It's purpose is more to be annoying, and probably to see what kinds of reactions people make.

I've only done it out of boredom. Usually I just don't unless someone says something completely ridiculous to me though.

Well, I'm friends with a Troll. He's the kind of douche who has a YouTube account of him screaming "FAGGIT ****** *****" over Xbox Live. Every day, he goes home, joins a party full of "like minded individuals" he has never met, and they all go trolling together, while using third party programs to boot people Xbox Live, all while screaming expletives.

He claims he does it because it's funny. While even I can admit to jumping into a game of Call of Duty and using a funny accent for a while, he goes far past that. He is the kind of person who takes Xbox way to seriously.
I know why he does it. Is it because he wants attention? No. Is it because he is insecure? No. He does it because that's all he has. Everyday, he goes home, trolls, and then repeats the process the next day, and he doesn't even realize how pathetic that really is.

I think most people troll "4 teh lolz", but I think there are a few who troll because that's actually what they believe, and another group do it just to put others down.

There are 2 types of Troll:

The "Fuckwad": The moron that will spam insults without any true purpose for the sake of simply getting attention, he realizes the internet is an audience and he's motivated by the same reason stupid people are motivated to be in reality TV shows, except he knows that the internet will protect his real identity in the case of doing something truly stupid.

The "Subtle" Troll: This is the guy that you probably won't hear about after making his initial début, but that returns to feed on the anger he has created. This is the guy that drops in on a forum, creates a well-written and well-constructed negative review of a popular game (glorifying negative aspects but not by going overboard and revealing that he is a troll) this will then lead to the exposure of the WORST people in the fandom of said game, people that go: "OMFG YOU SUX SO MUCH! U CAN'T SEE THIS GAME IS AWESUM!".

The end results

The "Fuckwad" Troll is a nuisance, something temporary and mildly annoying, but not a threat to any community.

The "Subtle" Troll will make the community ashamed of itself, for it will bring out the very worst within it and expose it, and he'll never get blamed for it.

PS: Personally I'm rather fond of "Subtle" Trolls as they help the community improve itself and notice it's own flaws. Of course, sometimes, they destroy "social lives" as well by exposing the worst side of specifically vulnerable targets, but if a "girl is exposing herself on webcam while under-aged" or "a boy is posting his home address on Facebook", the subtle Troll will merely expose these flaws to the person (sometimes causing emotional trauma)... one might say for the "greater good"

I troll trolls, if I can.
Nothing major, just backhand comments and snark... then I get back to my life.

There is no such thing as trolls.

And if there are, they're a smaller group of people than most tend to think. Others are just argumentative as hell and piss others off so much they label them trolls and walk away from the argument.

But real trolls are 14 year olds whose bed-time is 9:00 PM.

Simple answer: Wait until 9:01.

I've heard it be called "Internet Asperger's Syndrome", the complete and total lack of social manners or politeness over the internet, simply because no-one knows who or where you are. Aside from that, the usual attention or thrill seeking goes with it.

I laugh at them and don't feed them.

Honestly, how could you hate trolls, out of the problems that life throws at you, trolls are the one that you can solve by ignoring them. Loosen up, bro! They are flavor of the internet.

It's often great fun to kick up the ants nest of Internet users, and in combat with trolls, the victims often come off as stuck-up and obnoxious, which just makes getting them involved that much more satisfying.

Of course, you should always pick your targets wisely. I would never troll my beloved Escapist community, for example.

Also, a large portion of the Escapist don't fully understand the art of trolling, or what trolls actually do.
Being rude does not make someone a troll.

Because it's funny as hell. I take part in a lot of counter-trolling GiantBomb and yes, it is fun.

"A Troll is more than the embodiment of the internet hate machine, trolls are the ultimate anti-hero, trolls screw things up. Trolls exist to screw with people, they screw with people on every level, from their deepest held beliefs, to the trivial. They do this for many reasons, from boredom, to making people think, but most do it for the lulz!" - Encyclopedia Dramatica

People troll to get a response or if we were looking deeper into it it may be what they want to do but only feel safe doing it behind a usename online so they themself are not getting blamed. However they are just trolls, leave them alone they will just die eventually.
