The problem with police is that they are human beings. Human beings have a tendancy to abuse power. This is why husbands beat their wives. This is why mothers beat their children. This is why children abuse animals.

What is a police officer except a human being with a little more power than the average person. It is not unthinkable that certain, very abusive people might be drawn to positions of power.

My own experience with the police has been very negative. My first bad experience was when I was 16. I grew up in a small town where everyone knew each other. I happened to be transgendered. A police officer who greatly dislikes transgendered people saw me taking a walk in the evening and decided that he could not let this opportunity pass by. He pulled up next to me, told me to put my hands on the hood of his car and he got behind me and told me that he knew I was a freak and he could take what he wanted to from me. his exact words were "If I want something, that is what the gun is for. If anyone asks any questions, that is what the badge is for". He did not hurt me. He simply wanted to scare me. He simply wanted to show that he had power over someone he hated and that he could exercise this power at any time with no consequences.

My second bad experience happened at college. I was walking home after a football game. I was not going to the game, but there was a riot on the street where my apartment was housed. The students were acting crazy and the police brought out tear gas. I was completely clear of the fray, but I was standing next to two police officers. One told the other "look at those it makes me aroused to watch them crawl on the ground crying when I spray them". After that he went up to one girl who was crawling away from the riot trying to get out of the chaos. She had been sprayed and could not see. The officer kicked her in the side while she was begging to be let to leave.

This may seem like insane cases, but what happened to me and what I witnesses are not all that uncommon. Just recently, a police commander has been prosecuted for allowing the use of torture to get confesions out of random African American men. This torture included taser shots to genitalia and threats of violence against family members if the known innocent did not confess. I will give a link to the story below.

So, I just want the people who blindly support police to know that while having law and order is important. It is even more important for our law and order to be subject to the law itself. Otherwise it could be you, or your mother or sister who next finds themselves pushed up against a squad car by a man with rape on his mind.

Because they completely give up any sense of personal morality just to enforce 'the law'.

That's my reason anyway. Well, sort of. I wouldn't say 'hate'.

I don't have a problem with the police, granted i find it knid of annoying that they seem to find it very easy to fine me for noise but find it completely impossible to solve any crimes at all that effect me. I say this after (over the past few years) around 6 breakins (not all at the same house), a stolen wallet, my brother getting attacked and im sure there are others

What are all you people doing to attract the attention of the police? I mean seriously, we would set off illegal fireworks in public parks and race down streets and generally just be stupid and illegal in high school, and I never had a bad run in with the cops. For the most part, they seemed to have better things to do. So all of you people with stories of wrongful arrest and all that, you have to have been doing something that made you suspicious. What was it?

And I always thought The Police were pretty popular. I mean, who doesn't like "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic?"

What is it about cops that gets so many people's panties in a bunch? If someone is willing to risk their life everyday to keep me safe, then I'm going to damn well support them, but I seem to be in a shrinking minority, especially with people in my age group and younger (20-30 and under).

Please enlighten me on why you believe (or don' believe) that cops deserve our support.
you seriously think they are trying to save your life they probably eat like a dozen donuts before slowly walking to theyr car turning it up,sitting there for 5 seconds, turning on the radio, then they start driving flegmaticly to the place were they need to go,but maybe im just beeing stereotypical cause i hate cops

It's a love/hate thing for me. Police are nice when they put their life on the line to protect and serve others.

Police are not nice when they've become mandatory tax collector's by handing out... seatbelt tickets. I mean, how is not wearing a seatbelt endangering the lives of others around you? The only person it hurts is the person not wearing their seatbelt. And the other frivolous traffic tickets, like giving someone a ticket for going 5 mph over. Surely there are better things to do then that, and all that says to me is "we need more money, hand out tickets," which is sort of funny, because that's pretty close to what the commander of our police force said when he openly told the police to "hand out as many tickets as possible." What the shit?

And in some of the more extreme cases, police brutality is always fun:

I don't hate the police because they aren't incompetent idiots. It seems that many Americans hate police in this thread though, maybe this says something about the state of things across the pond.
I think a large part of the more positive sentiment towards police in the UK stems from the fact that don't carry firearms.

Because Hobbes was right - humanity IS shit, police enforce rules that make us behave better, and a lot of people resent being forced to be civilized.

I don't hate cops, I just have an issue with their sense of entitlement. there are plenty of really great people that work in the police force(I'm sure most), but there are also types that are all 'alpha males do alpha male things' personality.

I'm sorry, but MAYBE you're being stereotypical? You are being nothing but stereotypical. Hatred is no excuse for generalizing about people

I feel bad for the average police officer, because they belong to a massive label and idiots are incapable of separating individuals from groups. For every crazy cop who tasers someone for no reason there are dozens, probably hundreds, putting their lives on the line to protect you from some honestly bad dudes. They get zero respect from the average chump because said chump has either a) been roughed up by a bad cop before, which is an understandable(ish) reason to begrudge the police as a whole, or more likely b) has watched a news report about a bad cop doing something retarded. And its an escalating problem, the G20 situations proved that. I support our men and women in uniform, and I hope that maybe someday the general populace will stop actively trying to give them reasons to resent the people they CHOOSE to protect. We'd be a LOT worse off if nobody became police officers because of all this, wouldn't you agree?

Fuck da police always gettin me down
something something something something something cause I'm brown!

OT: Cause if the police are around it means something bad has happened, nobody likes it when bad things happen, especially if you are directly involved in said bad thing.

Because:
A) People are stupid
B) The Media likes blast every isolated case of police brutality or anything like it all over the place.
C) Rap music. Rappers are constantly slamming the police. You can't tell me that a few dipshit wannabe gangstas don't pick up on that.
D) People are stupid
Yup this is the reason/
