Why Do So Many People Hate the Police?

People as a whole don't like authority (never have, never will), and these days it is "fashionable" to dislike Law Enforcement.

That being said though, I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for those who work in Law Enforcement. Though I may be a bit biased.

Because the fuzz is trying to keep us down, man. They work for the Man, man. They're only about violence and keeping us down, man. Why can't they learn to love, man?

OT:I certainly don't hate the police. I don't like the corrupt police officers, but I don't anyone in power whose corrupt. The police play a vital role in our society, they keep thing from going into total anarchy and help to protect innocent people.

This is merely my opinion but here in the UK the Police are the public face of a system many people feel has lost its way. We direct our anger and disdain at the most public face we can, normally those wearing a high viz jacket with a badge on.

I've had a mixed bag with my encounters with the police. One night after closing time things got a little heated between the group of people I was with and another, tension was brewing and a fight was about to occur. This had been picked up on CCTV so a couple of cars were sent to the location. Whilst all of us were drunk, we still had some sense about us, which is probably why we hadn't started fighting already. The police arrived, asked us what the problem was. I acted as "spokesman" for my group, explained our problem, but then explained that it wouldn't go any further, we would walk off in one direction if the other group agreed to walk off in the other. The officers at the scene said fair enough, no cautions, warnings or anything like that, they just stayed in place for a few minutes to make sure we kept to our word. In that example they read the situation correctly, everyone involved used common sense and we all went on our merry way. If the police had not turned up, then I'm sure several people would have been in hospital 20 minutes later.

On the other end of the spectrum I saw a guy join the taxi que after another night out. He was wanted for something or other and tried to keep a low profile, in an area where all the police vans park in the town center, very clever. He was caught, and although he struggled a bit he had resigned himself to the fact he was spending a night in the cells. As he was being handcuffed I saw an officer pull out the CS spray and sprayed it right into the guys eyes. There could have been a reason but from where I was standing (about 2 feet away) he was neither resisting or being aggressive.

In the middleground we have this example. At around 4:20 in the morning after another night out (I see a pattern forming here, my town really is a shithole on a Saturday night) myself and one of my friends went to get some food, our other friend saying he'd catch up with us. 10 minutes later he turns up, face bloody after having been jumped (they thought he was someone else.) We immediatly took him up the afforementioned taxi area where the police base themselves, only to find none. We rang the police who said they pack up at 4am and if there was no immediate danger we were told to call another number to report the crime. Because we had been drinking (only a little, none of us were drunk) we had to wait untill the next day before my friend could make a statement. This is more of an example of how dodgy the system can be. The police do their jobs but unless they are there at the time for crimes such as theft or assault, nothing will ever come of it.

I don't dislike the police, the ones I have known socially are all nice enough people. When in uniform however they take on a different role, which means even if you are doing nothing wrong you still feel uneasy, especially when driving. You will never drive as well as you will when a police car is sat behind you travelling down the same single lane 30mph road. There is almost a feeling of relief when they make a turning or you pull off and they keep on going, which is ridiculous as they probably barely registered your existance infront of them, heh.

The Police, at least around campus are all idiots. You see on a college campus 90% of the police force is just really stupid students, trying to get some training and credentials for their resume.

They don't know how to do their job, are generally stupid and highstrung individuals, and they don't really do anything for the community. I just have never seen a campus police officer do anything useful, hell they don't even carry guns.

Some of the YouTube videos people record showing law enforcers doing the opposite of what they're doing. Or doing their job in a harsh and crude way.

I don't see anything wrong with cops. They do one of the toughest jobs - props to them.

However, there are a few bad apples that tend to ruin it for everyone. Some cops let their power get to their head.

I don't hate cops. Their job is difficult enough, and I have never been given reason to hate cops.

Well, if anything, the media's coverage of all those police brutality cases over the years certainly hasn't helped. Not only that, but also all those rappers with songs like ''Fuck The Police'' have contributed to this hatred of the law. Oh, and we can't forget that the police represent authority, and from what I've seen over the years people tend to dislike those who have authority over them. It's the same in high school. I wouldn't be surprised if the students hated the teachers for the same reason.

Then again, I could be wrong. I only got 4 hours of sleep last night, so my brain isn't all here.

The cops deserve our support because whenever I see an officer their usually eiether stoping something stupid like running into speeding traffic or keeping major events safe from vandles that's why we need to treat our police better.

Because I'm in Public Enemy.
FUCK THE POLICE

Nah, the police are ok. Occasionally they're a bit over-agggresive but usually they're pretty friendly.

To put it in DnD terms..

I'm Neutral Good.

Police officers (on the job) are 89% Lawful Neutral, 5% Lawful Evil and 5% Lawful Good, 1% Other.

To me, following the exact letter of the law at all times, while I do see that it is probably necessary, I just don't like it. There are just so many other ways to deal with other kinds of crimes (drugs and peaceful civil disobedience to be specific) that the law won't allow them to do, and yet many officers have no problems with this (cuz' thems the rules), I just can't like that attitude towards justice and fairness.

I respect what they do and the fact they sacrifice a great deal for the rest of us, but I just don't like how so many of them go about doing it.

I would probably get curb stomped a few years back by skinheads for wearing WRONG SHOE LASES.
To be fair, those shoe laces were blatantly liberal-jew looking.
THEY WERE YELLOW...

I didn't even like the colour but I had to use my GF ones because mine were completely torn apart (by her dog btw).

Because kids are stupid, and think alchohol and pot means fun, and since its illegal, it puts them at odds with police.
Awesome generalization.

OT: Anyone who says they love the police obviously hasn't had any run ins with shadier police officers.
Oh shove it. Ok fine, for HERE this is the case. How do I know? Cause I went to highschool where I live. The cops here are fine. To not like all police because some are bad is ALSO generalization.
Ya except I didn't say that having been involved with shadier cops means that all cops can't be trusted. I said that seeing cops as an unrelenting force of goodness is naive and you probably have not had a run in with a shady officer.

Because context seems to mean nothing to our generation.

A video was released not long ago of four police officers pinning down/striking a large male student from the university I attend. People naturally called police brutality and started hating on the police as soon as they could.

What they don't know is that the guy they were pinning down was under the influence, making threats to employees, barricading himself in their office, and resisting arrest. They also didn't know that they were only using tactical strikes to incapacitate their target.

But taken out of context, it looks like a video of police just beating the shit out of a guy.\

Why do you think that people hate the police?

Also, I hear that certain members of the government are corrupt and that therefore I should hate the government. All governments.
