Why do some consider Morrowind a better game than Oblivion?

I had a hard time getting past the visual style of Morrowind and it's environment. Was way too swampy and wasteland-like for my tastes. Oblivion was definitely gorgeous looking, obviously being newer, but even if those rolling hills and grassy fiends were done in Morrowind's engine, I'd still find it more welcoming. I think like everyone else, it comes down to whatever sets off a red flag in the back of your mind about initial presentation.

Having not played morrowind in a long time I cant judge this on story becuase I cant really remember it, what I do remember is that for me morrowind just looked better, obviously not in terms of graphics but all the locations were much more varied and had more of that fantasy feel about them (I really liked the look of Vivec for example).

Plus the huge variety of weapons (more games need spears)was more fun to play with than different sizes of swords and axes that you got in Oblivion

No quest markers, no tally whackers, no chubby faces, but boxed heads, but many things I still loved!
One thing to note, if you can get into games like baldurs gate, then you can get into morrowind.
