Why do some consider Morrowind a better game than Oblivion?

As a person who originally played Oblivion before Morrowind, I would much rather play Oblivion than Morrowind. I loved Oblivion, and as soon as I first started playing Morrowind, finding my first mudcrab, and killing it, the game just lost it's appeal as the prequel to my favorite game of all time. In Oblivion, the sound and music is better, the combat is better, you don't have to read as much to understand what the quests are or what people are saying, and the menu and upgrade system was much less complex (complex meaning spending hours thinking about what to level up in).

Morrowind is one of those games that makes me ashamed to say "I just couldn't get into it"
I know its a fantastic game and the next time its on sale on steam im gonna get it to just give it another shot of trying to get into it.

The main thing that stopped me getting into it was the horrible combat and the fact that the whole game overall just didnt feel very user friendly.

It's deeper, the athmosphere is better, it doesn't have that too easy to use quicktravel system.

It's just the whole 'being in another world' aspect is much stronger in my opinion. I'm not sure if enemies level with you, but that really pissed me off in Oblivion.
Alright I know this thread it two years old but I can't take it any more! Where is your avatar from? I've seen it! I know I have! AAAHHH o_O

...sorry

Movie from the 60s called The Producers. Don't worry I get that a lot :D.
OMG! YES! I remember that! I saw that years ago! wow! Thanks ^^

Morrowind had a great story, but its terrible game mechanics kept me from getting really into it. Oblivion had a slightly less immersive main campaign and creepy A.I conversations, but I'll be damned if that gorgeous world didn't melt my icy skeptical heart.
I think my heart skipped a beat when i saw those green hills and found I could actually go into them and explore.
gltiches be damned.
EDIT: Also, music in oblivion makes up for everything it lacks in my opinion.

Morrowind is a great game but its combat system sucked some serious ass.

Not to say Oblivions combat system is great of course.

I've always sort of wondered about this, so I'm glad someone did this thread. Oblivion really disappointed me with its leveling system. This makes me want to get Morrowind pretty badly, but I think I'm going to wait until I have a fast computer that can run it with all the graphics improving mods.

I prefer Morrowind to Cyrodiil plain and simple. I enjoyed wandering around the bitter coast, finding smuggler caves and stealing their lewt much more than I did the equivalent in oblivion. I prefer Morrowind's soundtrack (soundtrack is a big thing as it is like #1 determinant of immersion for me). Morrowind just has this vibe to it that I adore and that oblivion lacks.

I've never played Morrowind and I don't really intend to. So I don't have anything to compare Oblivion too.

That aside, I loved Oblivion. It was one of the first XBOX 360 games I've played and I clocked at least 200 or so hours into it. Sure, the main story wasn't that thrilling, but the fact that you have the ability to do the main quest on your own leisure and do lots of other things is what made me fall in love with it. I also didn't mind the leveling system too much unlike some people. Sure I guess there wasn't too much challenge due to it, but the thing I look for games is fun. And my god was that game fun.

I had a hard time getting past the visual style of Morrowind and it's environment. Was way too swampy and wasteland-like for my tastes. Oblivion was definitely gorgeous looking, obviously being newer, but even if those rolling hills and grassy fiends were done in Morrowind's engine, I'd still find it more welcoming. I think like everyone else, it comes down to whatever sets off a red flag in the back of your mind about initial presentation.

Having not played morrowind in a long time I cant judge this on story becuase I cant really remember it, what I do remember is that for me morrowind just looked better, obviously not in terms of graphics but all the locations were much more varied and had more of that fantasy feel about them (I really liked the look of Vivec for example).

Plus the huge variety of weapons (more games need spears)was more fun to play with than different sizes of swords and axes that you got in Oblivion

No quest markers, no tally whackers, no chubby faces, but boxed heads, but many things I still loved!
One thing to note, if you can get into games like baldurs gate, then you can get into morrowind.
