Really, that's the reason. It's generally amusing to annoy, anger, or otherwise watch others get hurt, physically, emotionally, or otherwise to a certain extent.
It's made worse by the fact that the line that sperates laughing at someone getting hurt and being disturbed by it is often very blurry, and shifting position.

Trolls are people who cause frustration and anger in anyone who is not a troll themselves.

Trolling is a lack of sophistication. They exist because they're incapable of raising themselves to a higher standard, like not being irritating. However, this is their only weapon. Without the anger reaction, they're helpless.
