Why Do YOU Buy Used?

Because I tend to buy older, out-of-production games you can't find any other way. Very rarely do I buy a new game for full price, because getting the game the day it's released has never actually mattered to me. Even if I know I'll love the game, I'd rather wait and buy overstock later (still a new copy... just for much less money). I'll only shell out the day-one $60 if I really want to show support for the developer.

Also, as far as I'm concerned, buying a used copy of a recent game for $55 is just stupid. If $5 makes a big difference in your finances, wait for the fucking price to drop.

I generally don't. The only times I do is when there is a game I'm only mildly interested in and I happen to see it in a used games bin (Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Armored Core 4 (Grrrreat success!), to name a few).

It's games like Fallout 3 that ain't NEAR worth the 60USD they're asking for.

Definitely disagree with this - 150+ hours is definitely worth that. But hey. Subjective.

OT: I don't want to pay that much for a bad game. There are quite a few games that I know I'll love that I will buy new (recently being stuff like Mass Effect, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed etc) but then there are a lot of games that I just want to try that aren't worth that...many of which I rent from places like Blockbuster. I've rented stuff like Sonic Generations, Operation Raccoon City, Force Unleashed 2 etc...all of which I would not pay the asking price, because, for me, there is not enough content, and...they're not that great. I don't want to spend £40 on a game that I will complete in a couple of days, unless it's providing me with an epic experience like Portal 2 did. But there are still a lot of games I'll buy second hand. Additionally, games that are difficult to buy first hand - I recently bought Bioshock 2 for a fiver.

Abolishing pre-played games is just... ridiculous.

Pretty much this. I don't buy used from places like Gamestop. I don't have any problem with the idea of buying/selling used games, and I don't think highly of the critical reasoning skills of those who do. On the other hand, though, a $2-5 discount isn't enough to warrant getting a used game.

On the other hand, 25-50% off direct from the owner IS a good deal, and it's better for both. The seller doesn't get boned by a middle man buying for 15% and selling for 90%, and I don't pay 90%.

In college, I used Amazon for most of my textbooks for exactly the same reason.

I don't buy used, as I'm only a PC gamer. (edit) To clarify, now that I think about it, I don't really buy new here, either. I primarily use Steam and wait for things to go on sale. Only very, very rarely do I buy things at launch or pre-order.

I do, however, buy used music when it's out of print / not available anywhere in lossless quality, (so places like Amazon don't cut it). Otherwise, I still buy new, as I like to support the artists I enjoy listening to.

Well that's a silly question, isn't it?
I don't think many people have that "stick it to the man! fuck large business!" mentality when they buy used games, they're just cheaper and are usually an identical product (sometimes damaged, but usually fine).

Right now I'm working construction, but I might be out of a job in a week or two.

Even now, I'm only making 100 to 200 dollars a week, if I get called out, so paying more than half or 1/4th of a paycheck for one game is kind of ludicrous.

I buy used when a game can't be found new anymore.

Which is extremely rare, and usually happens on eBay or some equivalent. Recently it was Day of the Tentacle and a replacement copy of The Curse of Monkey Island (of which I was missing CD1).

At all other times, I try to just shop smart. Which usually means not giving my money to GameStop and browsing my favorite online retailers or brick and mortar electronics stores.

Also, Steam sales and GOG.com.

I buy used because it's (usually) a price I think the game is actually worth. There's really no other reason.

sometimes i do it to hurt the publishers/developers when they pull "Extra edition" 3 months after release (SSFIV:AE and UMVC3 are good examples of this) after i bought the original. or if its for a older generation of console or the game is rare to find, like last week i bought DMC: HD Collection 2nd hand because i could not find it anywhere else. the same with MGS HD collection that my sister wanted.

but most games i really do want to invest in I buy new, otherwise games i'm not that interested in i buy 2nd hand (last one being MW3).

Because it's better to get two or three games for the same price as a new release.

Because I'll pay full price for a game I'm sure I will like, while the rest aren't worth the gamble.

The goddamn price tags on games nowadays. I rarely buy used (No GameStop or such within 150 kilometers), but if I'm popping down to a big city or I otherwise run into a steal, I'll preferably grab old titles for less.

I mean c'mon, 69,95 for a brand new game? There better be a solid gold game disc inside for that kind of dosh.
