Why Do YOU Buy Used?

I don't, since in New Zealand, pre-owned games are about five bucks (If that. Sometimes they even cost more, ffs) less than new ones. The only time I buy pre-owned games is when I can't find a new copy.

Although a couple of months ago, I bought a pre-owned copy of Hitman: Blood Money. Inside, the case had a crack that split into three cracks further on. The inside of the case also had a cock drawn on in permanent marker. The manual was also worn on one specific corner. "Holy shit! This is the exact same copy I traded in five fucking years ago! BLACK MAGIC ABOUND!"

I'll never understand why people think this is true of anything but new releases and first party Nintendo games (which just don't drop in price until about a year before the death of the system they're on.)
Also, handhelds (at least Nintendo ones) tend to retain value (first party or not).

But I didn't come to nitpick so much as to explain. People are arguing the most convenient examples, the ones that make people look like idiots. Considering how fast titles depreciate, even new ones, it's not hard to see how used games can be worth it.

Because I'm poor, because I can return them if I absolutely abhor them (I'm looking at you, [Prototype 2]), and, by and large, I don't need the games that come out on launch day. Also, it usually happens that within a week or two of a game's release, some idiot with more free money than brain cells will have traded in a copy of whatever I'm looking for. I scoop it up then. Sometimes. Maybe.

Sixty bucks is a fucking lot of money, and I don't have any way to really rent before I buy. No way I'm risking that much money if I haven't played a game unless it's a series I'm a fan of.

But seriously, fuck the current price of games.

I tend to buy a few games from time to time at full price (specifically those made by publishers/franchises that I enjoy and want to support) and I occasionally take advantage of some deals that occur for buying multiple used games. If it is a game that was only released a couple of months, I would buy it new.

If a game has been out for longer than that, I would probably wait to buy it used.

Cheaper. It's that simple.

I can buy a brand new high-profile PS3 game for $110. (Australia. Shut up.)

Or I can wait a few months and buy it for $70. (Seriously, stop laughing.)

Or I can wait a few months, trade in some old games and get it for $30.

I make no apologies for saving money. Fuck the developers and publishers. If they want my day-one new game money they can either lower prices or make games that are really worth those ridiculous prices.
I recommend to you this beauty. Buy all my games from it.

I don't. Not so poor that I will buy a used game for 54.99 instead of 59.99, especially when they probably paid the person less than half that.
I'll never understand why people think this is true of anything but new releases and first party Nintendo games (which just don't drop in price until about a year before the death of the system they're on.) I picked up a used copy of Ragdoll Kung Fu for $2 yesterday[footnote]The standard price is $10, it's a budget title for the PC[/footnote], proving that not only is the markdown usually pretty significant if it's not brand freakin' new, but also that PC games can still be bought used if you know where to look. Not that I would recommend it with this one; I got extremely lucky because the previous owner hadn't registered it with steam, opting for the stripped down multiplayer options you get without having to download Valve's software. Still, I buy used PC games all the time, and that's the first one I've bought that had a one time use code on it. Everything else I've bought in recent memory has either a disc check only, or a CD key that can be used on as many computers and by as many accounts as the owner wants.

Oh, I also pick up used console games on the cheap, it's just that the most recent console I own and still actually play is my DS Lite, which I do occasionally pick up used games for for quite a bit less than the new price. I've never been into a Gamestop that didn't have used Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 games for under $20, though. They may not have been released the day before, but they were significantly cheaper than $5 off a new copy.
I live in Australia.

It's true, a lot of our pre-owned games are cents off our new ones.

It just isn't worth it.

I could maybe see that with Australian prices, but it's almost always stated to be $55 vs. $60, not $115 vs. $120 or $90 VS. $85, which means we're talking US, not Australia.

Because they're cheaper... why else? When you've got two ways to purchase exactly the same thing (and this statement only applies when they are exactly the same), and one is cheaper than the other, you'd pretty much have to be an idiot to do it the more expensive way. I'm both amazed and appalled at the success companies have had convincing us that buying used is somehow evil.
I have only one disclaimer I feel should be added to this - when the price is literally merely shaved rather than cut, like it's $5 off or something ridiculously small. In that situation, I feel it's wrong to leap at the "saving" rather than supporting the publisher and developer. It's really on stores to make sure it doesn't happen - and GameStop often puts used and new on the same shelf, right next to each other, because they know people who don't know better will take the minimal saving and thus they'll pocket all the cash for themselves - but when you have the knowledge, it seems trivial to leap at a relatively low discount at the cost of shafting the people who actually made the game.

It's a mystical place that was everywhere back in the 90's and early 2000's, but in modern times only comes into existence when a system is being phased out. I got a brand new DS copy of Civ Rev for $4 in one of those a week ago.

Oh no, I know what, say, a bargain bin is, or a bargain shelf. But a bucket? A BUCKET??! ...y'see you say "bargain bucket" and I picture this:

If I think it will be meh, I'll buy it used, if I think it will be crap I'll skip it altogether, if I think it will be good I'll wait for some reviews and feedback.

This is why new IP's are so unheard of, this is why we get so many frickin' sequels.

Hey, people wouldn't be so unwilling to take a chance on a new title if publishers didn't charge so much for them. It's a vicious cycle, entirely caused by publishers who would rather whine about the current state of the market (you know, competition from pirates and used games -- from an economic standpoint both are a clear signal that consumers consider the price of a new game to be too high, regardless of what the legality may be) than adapt to it.

I don't. I have a bad obsession with having to buy brand new games etc, I can't stand buying preowned books even. I'm a bit of a neat freak in that aspect. Of course, buying used is completely rational, being cheaper.
