I personally do not play these games but one of my friends is obsessed with one of them (care to guess which one) and I don't see the attractiveness of the game. I asked him why he plays and he couldn't give me an answer so now I just want to know what it is that makes people want to play these games. (I am not making fun of or picking on people who do enjoy these games in anyway)

Some people love the utterly repetitive gear grinding and raiding.
Some people love using their higher levels to make their low levels over powered and then pwn newbies (Evil sons of b****es..).
Some people are simply lifeless. Some people Role Play, tho good role playing in MMO's has kinda died now unless you do it in very cut-off areas and/or groups.

Because theres always more to do. You can beat the game, but youll still have hours and hours more of content, plus is fun to just talk with random strangers, and sometimes they can help you alot.

Whenever I have played an MMO, it's usually because I have had massive amounts of time to waste. So the short and simple answer is that I play it for the same reason I play any other game; I'm bored and have nothing to do.

It's because I have real friends I play with. It's loads of fun when you stay roughly the same level as them, we do loads of dungeons and stuff.

I play them because I can do other things at the same time, like MSN or web surfing.
I play them when I'm hungover or something, when my strategy and aim has completely left me for abit.

To have fun, Sherlock.
Haha, this as well, I can't stand people who say they get addicted to WoW and blame the game. If you're not having fun, grow a spine and quit.

I stopped playing WoW for my exams, and I had no motivation to start playing again.

The main reason I feel keeps people playing is Daily quests, these are quests you can only do once a day, with a relatively substantial reward. I don't know about everyone, but I know that many people, including myself, only logged on to do those quests as part of a routine. Add to that raiding, is incredibly social compered to most games, and once you complete a dungeon you have to wait a week for it to reset, effectively drawing out the content.

And with the issue of the pricing; I playing nothing but WoW (with other hobbies) for around 6 months before the exam season. That's around £45-60 for the gametime. I don't know many other games that give me 6 months of enjoyment for that price. Plus the expansions give an amazing amount of content for the price. So MMOs are cheap.

My friend, who never stopped playing during the exams (as I fear his results will show) just expected me to come back, since my "Guild needed me." Yes, I made friends on WoW that I happily talk to through other means.

Edit: And I'm not even touching on the reward/self improvment aspect.

TD:LR: Social aspects and drawn out, addictive, 'routine' content.

Various reasons, the social aspect is often very attractive. But for me its mainly PvP.

more or less what about the game do you find fun Watson?
Well think of all the things that make up an MMO. For example, repetitive grind. You may find that to be incredibly boring, but some people think that is fun. The reason you can't see why people have fun with MMO's is because you m don't like them, and that's not really something you can change.

MMO's can be great fun, as long as they dont become your lifestyle. Finding a party and going hunting/ pvp'in/ RP'ing or just dicking around can be great fun. If you get bored, just logout, dont force yourself to play, because you "need" to get 10 more levels or whatever.

If you play mmos like this, they can be very fun. Sometimes even more fun then regular games.

I don't play anymore, but I'll give you my reasons why I started and kept playing.

For me originally, I was curious about WoW, that grew into meeting people then that grew into just the fun of raiding.

With WOTLK though, the fun dried up, raiding was boring compared with TBC and Vanilla raiding, I waited for Ulduar.

Ulduar, is boring and unoriginal, having been in a guild that cleared all of it, (Less Algalon) and a few hard modes, it wasn't fun in the least. So I quit following suite of quite a few friends who had seen the fun drain out of the game as well.

That's the story I give anyone who asks me about WoW, if you're still having fun, more power too you, if not why even play it?

I like the whole building your character up from scratch thing. Along the way you meet people, make friends, collect shit, kill shit, gain new shit, shoot shit at people and eventually become a shit head that picks on noobs. In games like MMO's, you become really powerful at some stage and it's a lotta fun to show off all your awesome skills, also you feel a sense of accomplishment once you get to that high stage believe it or not.

I didn't like WOW because but I played it since all my friends from school jumped on at one time. I didn't find it that challenging, however loved Lineage 2 since of it's harsh rules a cruel reality in the game. Well thats all changed now, they made a lot like WOW! :p

the social aspect. i only starting playing because i had RL friends that did, and i mainly stuck around for the raid game friends i made on my server. i also didn't mind the grinding that much, since wow made it easy to break it up into fairly quick subgoals.

once my guild collapsed, though, i couldn't really justify spending $15 a month just to shoot the shit on the forums, especially when i was looking for a job. i may still go back, but frankly i'm not bored enough yet.

In my personal experience, it has kept me in touch with old friends. I started playing WoW while living in Texas when Washington state was my home. MMOs offer a way to not just stay in touch, but hang-out, with friends over great distances. I lived in Texas for three and a half years. Due to WoW, I was able to hang-out with my little brother for the first time in three years. I grant you that we were both orcs at the time. As time moved on and I moved back home, I continued to play for that reason: to be with my friends despite the distance. Now that my wife plays, we play together, and it has helped give us something enjoyable to do as a couple.

In short, I am not in it for the society which currently dominates the game (I could not imagine why anybody would be); I am in it for the society formed long before the game. I am greatfull to Blizzard for giving me the vehicle.

I admit that this is just me, and experience has shown that I am an anomaly here.
