Why do you play online games?

Because they're constantly updated which increase the chance that they will not become as tedious and repetitive like singleplayer games.
Depends on the game. Modern Warfare 2 I played online because I felt like it actually did a sniper class correctly--one shot to the head or upper body and the person was dead. That's the only time I enjoyed playing competitively. Medal of Honor I played online because I wanted the platinum trophy, and thus had to play. Raccoon City I play online because the game is nigh impossible to play by yourself. There's bad AI, and then there's the AI in Raccoon City. Oh man...
But mostly I play co op games online. I loved jumping into random Resident Evil 5 games and helping out a stranger get passed a certain boss on Professional. Working as a team in the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer in order to make sure everyone makes it. Playing Spec Ops to help someone get that last star on Veteran in Modern Warfare 3. Playing Resistance 2 as a Medic because no one wanted to be the healer class (and I could stop entire enemy armies in their tracks while my team cut them down). Playing Left 4 Dead--no, wait. I don't have any good memories of playing Left 4 Dead. All the strangers I played that game with turned out to be jerks--shoot you in the back, slam doors in your face, vote to kick you, steal your med-pack, leave you to die. I don't know what it was about that game, but no one seemed to want to help anyone out. It was always, "Play it EXACTLY as I'm playing, or I'm going to make your life Hell." Otherwise, I love online co op stuff, so that's why I play online.

I used to play online a lot, (Call of Duty, Halo, Battlefield), but now it's slowed to crawl.
I used to play for these reasons.
1. Leveling up and getting new stuff.
2. Playing with friends.
3. Shenanigans.
Reason #1 provided much of the quantity of time, but reasons 2 and 3 easily blow #1 out of the water for quality time.
I guess I kind of stopped because (reason 0: I'm not competitive) reason 1 got kinda old, 2 became less frequent, and 3, well... 3 is still fun as hell.

They tend to be less predictable then single player games and its also easier to time them, like, you generally know how long a match will last with a multi game and it gives a nice stopping point once your done, single player games tend not to have nice stopping points anymore.
For a whole bunch of different reasons! Challenge and diversity mostly, but there are other reasons I've played online as well. Playing with friends for example is always fun, often regardless of the game in question even.
Recently I've been playing a fair bit of Tribes: Ascend, but in the past I've gotten pretty into a whole array of different online modes. Starcraft 2 (Platinum league, for what little that's worth), Dawn of War 2, Battlefield 2, Left 4 Dead, Bad Company 2, Company of Heroes (Probably my favourite online rts), SWAT 4, and a few others. Playing online in those games just offered an experience the singleplayer couldn't replicate. Left 4 Dead is damned boring without friends yelling over their mic for example, and you'd see people pulling all sorts of clever tricks and strategy in the various rts that the AI would just never know to do.
Then there's MMO. I used to play WOW for the longest time and I've also dabbled in other mmo from Age of Conan to EVE and Guild Wars. Those I largely play for completely different reasons than the games above; I play MMO to explore, to see the vast environments and to interact with both the NPC and players alike inhabiting that world. It's why WOW was so good at the time, the world was massive and incredibly detailed. Helped that a good number of my friends played as well.
Eventually however players quit and I ran out of new things to explore so WOW fell by the side. Just nothing left to do there, I don't care about the competitive pvp aspects nor the raiding. Ah well!

I tend to stick mostly to co-op gaming when it comes to multiplayer. Most of the games I play, I usually get to playing multiplayer after it's been established for a bit so I suck hard when it comes to the competitive modes. And I don't have the patience to stick with it for a while and just get better.

In case there was a grain of seriousness there, it's actually his ult. If he kills an enemy champion while it's active, all of his cool downs refresh, and most of his abilities stack. Add that to a decent build and you have a recipe for rape, although he's weak to stuns, which is why he's not used much at high levels of play.The Wykydtron said:

Not so much the competition, but I enjoy teamwork. Getting to fight alongside other people in games against adversaries is wonderful. Most of the games I play are lonely explorations and about single-handedly saving the world, so having real people alongside you is fantastic.
Ohhh that makes sense. I only thought it was the Phantom Dancers since whenever he uses his epic chase/teleport move to get in close it's literally Crit, Crit, Crit dead. I was playing Lulu at the time though, she's not the healthiest of champions on a good day... Even if her ult is just full of trolltastic potential. Well, the phantom dancers (along with the rest of the item build) are the reason just about every hit is a crit, but the ult is the reason he's so good at taking out entire teams on his own. If it weren't for the way his ult worked, he wouldn't be able to take out more than one or, at the most two champions on his own; he's just too squishy.The Wykydtron said:
