Why does all my effort prove fruitless?

I read a good chunk of Internet Kraken's Dwarf Fortress LP, and decided to make one myself for Daggerfall (what with imitation being the best form of flattery), I put about three and a half hours into the OP, and forty five minutes later, less than ten people have looked at it.

I've put up other topics in the past as well, and after examining their successes, I've come to one conclusion. The less effort I put into my topics, the more successful they will be.

Why is this, Escapist? Why?

Also, because I'm shameless and don't want three hours of my life to just die, the LP of Daggerfall is <link=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.258867-Lets-Play-Daggerfall>here if you're interested.

Attention span. If you can get your idea out in a couple of sentences the internet will actually take time to read all of it.

Don't question the hand of the internet. We don't want well thought-out posts. We don't want effort or insight.

We want lolcats and pr0n. >.<

Well to get fruit you need tree...

OT: Because the escapists can't be bothered reading? I made a really long thread and only got 1 comment, I was kind of sad.
Really the only long threads that get many replies are reviews...

^This. If you make it really long, nobody's going to care about it. If it's short, sweet, and to the point, more people will read it.

I don't know. The only thread I created was something I had actually joined the Escapist to discuss, and ended up with less that 15 posts, I believe. You can never really tell what people want.

You're on the wrong website. I was under the impression that the people liked interesting reads when they're bored.

Nah, I'm just talking about the internet in general. Maybe the Escapist prefers interesting discourse, but it's the exception rather than the rule for this infinite series of tubes we frequent.

Firstly, I think it's because of the subject matter. I only vaguely know of Dwarf Fortress and from what I've heard I'm only mildly interested. Perhaps the subject matter (regardless of how masterful your creation is) isn't very well known by people.

Secondly, an internet forum usually thrives with smaller amounts of text. As said before, people have short attention spans. This is why we rarely have comments delving into the complexities the human mind stretching for pages at a time.

Apart from "people don't like to read massive posts" I don't know.

God save me, I think that 90% of the people on this site are hear to post one or more variations of the following in threads:

a) ^This

b) LOL

c) *insert generic witty comment*

d) Wow, cool..thanks!

e) Tl;dr

f) Any offhand/short comment

in order to get a post count/increase internet exposure.

Not really. Your Justin Beiber hate threads and "Jocks is stupid" threads usually get a lot of replies. My thread on the tax exempt status of churches was surprisingly not met with much enthusiasm.

Actually, I feel that the subject matter is the real issue. Uhh...basically? YOur subject was of no interest to me.

Really? That is shocking. I can't think of anything more invigorating than a deep discussion about court cases involving tax law.

Far more entertaining than the obligatory "MAESTR CHEF VS SAMUSHOTTIE!!" threads. :p

Probably because many people don't have that great a grip on stats and skills etc. It takes someone with Experience in RPGs to fully comprehend all the things of importance in character generation. Explaining it to them will probably just confuse the people without prior character generating experience.

I have to say, just under 10 people within the duration of 45 minutes actually sounds like an impressive rate of visitors to me, as my "most viewed" thread of all time has garnered... 397 total views now (a lot of which are me, revising and updating things), and that one has been live for just over 9 months now. If I got despondent after only 45 minutes I think I'd have probably given up reviewing obscure music by now (which is what all my threads are) - the trick is really to have very low standards.

These days if at least one person posts a reply, I consider that a triumph, and hold a joyous celebration whilst wearing an extremely festive hat.

Unless the central issue you raise is controversial, the thread title itself poses a question that people will respond to without needing to read the original post, or you're talking about something that readers feel a personal investment in, you're probably not going to see massive numbers of viewers and respondents - thoughtful discussion exists here but it does so within a sea of "forum white noise" that all but drowns it out. "Fire and forget" threads are everywhere, thoughtful user-created content without some (typically divisive/inciendiary) gimmick posted in the more discussion oriented sections of the forums tend to get buried under all the chaff.

When posting content like a "Let's Play" or a review, which are arguably not primarily created for their discussion value, the same is still true - you'll either be literally the only one who has ever reviewed something[footnote]Like say... me - a quick search through the User Reviews section of the forums confirms that I am the only one to ever create threads with those band names[footnote]Holding MEANING as band names that is - for example, you'll find a bunch of threads with "Penumbra" in the title but mine is the only one about the obscure French Gothic Metal act, the rest are about the game series.[/footnote] in the title.[/footnote], or one among a veritable sea of other people who have done that, possibly far more eloquently than you. Either way, you're stuck dealing with an audience that either doesn't already care about your chosen topic prior to entering your thread, or forced to compete with all the other people talking about what you've decided to talk about - neither translates into "surefire hit!" as a general rule, not without mitigating factors at play (like existing audience investment due to name recognition).

Hence why I have very low expectations - it's much less depressing when very few people bother to read what I've spent hours writing if I didn't really expect anyone to read it in the first place; it is definitely nice to feel like you're appreciated and you won't see me turning my nose up at what little acclaim my writing garners me amongst the community, but those things are pleasant surprises, not my primary motivation.

Quite simple really; you're not eating enough squash. Don't worry, this is a common problem that many people suffer from; and, thankfully, is easily rectified.
