Because a noob is someone who doesn't try to play the game and they just annoy people.

Newbies on the other hand are those that are willing to learn and play properly, trying to not annoy the others.
This. In any given game, pretty much everyone was a newb at some point. Not everyone has ever been a noob. The willingness to learn and in particular trying to get yourself to learn the simplest things without having to ask silly questions are a good sign. Asking questions in chat like "how do i stab monster?" in any MMO qualifies you for the second.

What we have is a term misunderstanding.
I always figured it like this:
n00b: An annoying person within a game.
Newb (Or Newbie): Someone new to a game.

n00bs are bad.
Newbs are fine.

That's the way I always thought it was, anyways.

thanks for pointing out my mistake i will learn form it!
And that makes you slightly less of a Newb. If you refused to learn fromit you would have been a n00b.

You are describing a newb. Newbs or newbies are players who have not had time to learn how to play the game with the skill of an experienced player. I help newbs. I teach them basic skills and if it's an MMO or online game, give them stuff. (Example, in Garry's Mod I often assist less skilled players in making their contraptions work).

However, n00bs...
N00bs are people who usually claim to have been playing the game much longer than they actually have, boast about their "great" skills and they also may accuse anyone who kills them of hacking. They might also reject any attempt to help them, because they are all so awesome and don't need your help. If they are low level (on games with levels) they will claim to have high level a "main account/character."
They also frequently join servers intended for advanced or experienced players.

Like a guy in a game of Halo. We were on Val, and the other team had just got the Banshee. My immediate reaction was to get that weird rocket thingy that would fire rockets at the banshee, and hopefully stop it from making us dead.

Some ass betrays me, grabs it and fires the whole stock of ammo at literally nothing, before quitting the match. THAT is a n00b.
Actually that's a griefer.
A noob would have grabbed the launcher and proceeded to run off (ignoring the banshee) waste half the ammo and then get headshotted by an enemy sniper who then covers the launcher to prevent anyone else from getting it. Probably while screaming into his mic how awesome he was for getting such a l33t weapon.

You are mixing up noobs and newbies.
A noob is someone who actually sucks at the game and blames everyone for everything.
While a newbie is someone who is new to the game and is not afraid to admit his own faults. And he can sometime take other peoples falls.
Newbie=/=Noob.

I think you mean newbie
newbie: somebody who started playing knows he isnt great and WANTS to learn
noob: a 5 year old idiot that thinks he is awesome but sucks at it and DOESNT WAT TO learn
I think you get the point

Well, this classification system is new to me. But yeah, noobs are irritating. It's that simple. Everyone has to start from something so newb are welcome plus they're easy to kill :D

I get the noob/newbie thing, I actually get a little annoyed about people not being patient enough to find out which one they're playing with. I recently let my sister use my live account to play left 4 dead 2 online since she only has silver. It was her first time on versus, and she got really confused with spawn mode. Within a minute the other players voted her off... Now, she's pretty good on campaign so I think it was awfully unfair to kick her before she settled in. Noobs= bad, but make sure it is one before launching the attack?
In fact, L4D people have no mercy at all towards people they find lacking in any way- Just playing two people on the same console is enough to earn a vote.

I can't count the number of times I have been screaming in frustration at the idiots who keeps putting up votes, when I have a friend over and we feel like going for a bit of L4D Versus fun. It doesn't matter how well we are doing. At times we have had far the highest scores, and executed timed attacks that took out two or more survivors while the rest were doing fuck all, and yet, they still think it's the most important thing in the world that they don't have two on the same console on their team.

God I hate it.

It's not that we hate noobs, it's just that they can get...so...ANNOYING.
Mind you we were ALL noobs once upon a time, so maybe we see a little bit of our stupid childhood in them, when we couldn't figure out the now obvious puzzles, or we used Game Genie for a certain game because our noobish minds couldn't think outside the box

I've stopped playing online now, only go on when I really have to. I resent the power complex people get from voting off the "weaker" members, or console sharers. Ugh.

Yep. Our OP is semantically confused. No one hates Newbs. Everyone hates n00bs.

I don't hate n00bs.... I PWN them! Hehe sorry, couldn't resist. (for me this only applies to Left 4 Dead)I don't mind new players, I do find myself, unfortunatley, grumbling under my breath when someone isn't as good as me. Mainly though when they keep making the same dopey mistakes or won't listen to advice I get cheesed.

That's why, when new to a game I (and I recommend this) play through singleplayer to understand the controls and basics, learn tips and tricks online to increase that base knowledge, and stay rather quiet until comfortable enough with the material to not look like a moron. I think it's a good approach to gaming and really any other subject for that matter.

When I join a Borderlands server and some guy starts shooting me asking for guns, how can I not hate him?

I love bashing noobs, but I don't want them standing in my way of victory, if your team sucks you won't be able to win on your own. It's not fun playing when the rest of your team acts like headless chickens...

I feel that there is a difference between new players and noobs.

I don't expect new players to know everything. A noob is a person who is NOT new to the game, and yet continues to make dumb/annoying mistakes among other things.

Because they are a part of the rebel alliance and a traitor! Take them away!

OT: Because they annoy people who are actually skilled at the game they're playing.

I think you may have it wrong. What you are describing is a "newbie", someone who is new to a game's multiplayer section, who people generally don't have too much of a problem with.

The term "noob" is a name given to people who either use methods designed for new players (ie using the grenade launcher in MW2) despite being experienced player, or are generally unlikeable because of anger issues, excessive swearing/gay jokes, or the like.
Grenade launchers aren't designed for new players. It's part of the game. The people who get pissed at being hit by grenade launcher are noobs for being sore losers.

"Noobs" are the dickwads of the internet.
"Newbs" or "Newbies" are the new ones. No-one really hates them, just finds them annoying sometimes. It really pays off to get some basic single player practice before going into multiplayer.

Especially in games with aircraft.
