Why does Nickelback warrant such hate?

I constantly see comments where people think Nickelback is crap. Why is that? I've listened to a fair number of their songs and I don't mind them at all; I'd even go so far as to say I like the band a fair deal. Don't get me wrong, they're no "Rhapsody of Fire", but still... why the hate?

All the songs sound the same to me. Also, they're... okay. The musical equivalent of vanilla. Tasty? I guess. Normal? Hell yeah. All the good flavors are weird-sounding and risky. Iced Earth Strawberry and Judas Priest Pecan are out of the question to some.

I think it just has to do with how "same-y" their music is.

Also, I think it's a vocal minority that hates them. The majority of the population must like them, as they are quite successful.

Its not a bad thing when you can recognise what band is singing a song, but when you can't tell if its a new song or just an old one they are playing, that's a worry.

They're a good example of sell-outs.

Their first two albums weren't that bad. Nothing special, but good for the pseudo-post-grunge it tried to be. After their third album was a smash hit, they just decided to go for radio friendly unit shifters.

I like them. Although I do admit, some of their song are basically the same music with different lyrics.

So it seems. They haven't been particularly praised critically, with common criticisms being their blandness and predictability often being major points of criticism. Also, I think Kreuger's voice simply grates a lot of people, like Fran Drescher.

I dislike Nickleback because I think their music is shit. Other people love them because they think their music is the shit. Its a matter of opinion. Your opinion is different from that of most of the people here, judging by the comments I've seen about them (everywhere but on this thread of course due to the OP Effect*), but its just as valid as anyone else's opinion.

*No matter what the topic, the majority (or at least a large minority in cases where the OP's view is incredibly unpopular) of responses will be in agreement with the OP. I'm not sure why, but its something I've noticed

For the same reason that people hate Kings of Leon. Average bands that got more than they deserved. While other people work hard and get very little trying to be original, these guys coast in on boring fumes and get ludicrous amounts of money for it.
I don't hate Nickleback, I hate that they are world famous and others aren't.

It isn't about the music, its about the situation. Are you gonna bark like a dog, or are you gonna bite?

I don't have a problem with music sounding similar, mostly because I listen to Breaking Benjamin, but the reason I don't like Nikelback is because they try to market the songs that I don't like. It seems that for every Burn it to the Ground there are five If Everyone Cared style songs that I imagen soccer moms listen to while driving around in their mini vans.

They aren't interesting at all. Generic alt-pop-rock. At least their vocalist isn't a whiny emo kid, I'll say that in their support.

They're not bad, just average but incredibly overrated. I just don't get what's so interesting about them, they sound like every other generic hard rock band from recent years.

The only song I like is "Far Away"

It's a matter of two things really. Historically you look at the Rock bands that became popular, like the Beatles, Zeppelin, The Who, Elvis Presley, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Journey, Judas Priest, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, Scorpions and hell since they're from the same country -- Rush. You listen to the aforementioned, and you know their influences when listening to them, but yet at the same time they were very revolutionary and fresh in their time. They may have had some simple or basic songs on the radio, but they weren't afraid to go all out and take chances, like The Who's Quadrophenia or Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Especially Rush.

However you look at Nickelback and see they're our generation's definitive Rock band so to speak, and their songs are so terribly generic. I very much doubt there will be a "Quadrophenia" or "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" for them.

And the second reason is, since they are so bland and vanilla, you have many music aficionados that would rather listen to something fresh and unique. There are much more better contemporary bands out there, sadly most of them aren't on the radio and are usually from Europe. Let alone the fact you may never see them in the top 40 for more than a week. That's the problem with Nickelback, it's a band that I don't think will inspire this generation or future generations to really take anything from their musicianship.

And that is why they are disliked, they're just a successful band that is much more mediocre and plain than it's predecessors.

Were they trying to be artists? If not I don't believe they would be sell-outs, they'd be people who did what they were trying to do.

Maybe it's only me, but I only hate Chad Kroger. He is a douche of a vocalist. And they sound same-y. So there's that. But I don't mind an instrumental Burn It To The Ground.
