Why don't people like anime?

The hardcore fanbase can be annoying as fuck and when you are standing next to them at the mall you cant just mute them like a 12 year old on live.

You might as well ask me the question: why don't I like techno? I'll still give you the same answer as pretty much every other question. 'Because I just don't get it.'

My main issue is repetition. Western animation is diverse whereas anime, regardless of tone is very similar if not outright the same in drawing style.

The voices, art style, tone of story (in general), music, and the fact it is animated.
I may be able to get over a few of those for a great story, but the voices are deadly. The high-pitched Japanese voice actors kill my ears, and the English ones either suck or try to imitate the Japanese ones.

To start off, I love it... But some people don't like it probably because its too different from western animation...

The art style can throw off people... like the hair colors, which ties into the whole manga being in black and white deal... or the exaggerated expressions, fully forgetting that western animation has been using exaggerated expressions since the beginning of animation...

Also, all those stereotypes that exist... people think its all porn... or everything involves collecting... or all the females having such large breasts that they have their own orbit, (which theres just as much or more anime featuring females with normal to flat breast sizes)... Plus theres the whole teen angst thing that alot of people hate...

Probably been done, but...

I have heard this a lot on forums and irl, but I find it hard to understand. I can see older adults not liking it because they think its a kids' cartoon, but I know teenagers who understand the subject matter and still don't like anime. Disregarding hentai, what are your reasons for not liking anime?
Why don't people like science fiction? Why don't people like drama? Why don't people like opera? Why don't people like onions?

Anyway, I can see the artistic styles turning people off. I love it. I love the art more than I love the actual genre, myself. There's a lot of anime where I don't like the story, but love the style.

I can see that. I mean, I tend not to hate any medium carte blanche. Anime's just a container. I have trouble hating the overarching packaging. I'm watching Bleach right now through Netflix, just finished Fullmetal Alchemist, love Tekkaman Blade, enjoyed Claymore, and have a few more udner my belt, but I'm hardly a anime fan per se.

Or they're just responding to stereotypes about spky haired kids and underaged girls.

Anime is rather simplistic and does usally follow the steryotypes. Even if they're Asian they look Caucasian. EVERY Anime will have porn in it eventually. Usually anyone who deems themselves a Weaboo is into the really creepy stuff such as Loli(in fact, every Weaboo I know is.), and as my final statement, Anime fans are usually like you, OP, because they think it is wonderful and perfect and should be "enjoyed" by everyone.

Because I'm not familiar enough with the various genres and the culture from which it emerges, so I cannot appreciate it as much as I should? What other reason is there?

I imagine it is the same for why Japanese people don't watch Family Guy or whatever. Unless they do. Which would be strange.

I just don't like the medium, with the exception being Cowboy Bebop, and perhaps other animes that are like Cowboy Bebop (which I haven't seen.)

As I've said before Cowboy Bebop is probably as far from "typical" anime you can get without calling it western animation.

I personally like anime, but I can easily understand why others don't. Frankly, it's weird and there's always the stigma that all animation has of just being kid's stuff. We've grown used to the absurdities of the Japanese, but it's confusing to newcomers.

I find anime riddle with cliches. Maybe I've just watched too much of it and out grown it. I need a really compelling story with great characters. Most of the recommend anime I hear are from 5 or 10 years ago.

If any body knows of anything recent that's really good or original. I'd appreciate the recommendation. Preferably without high school kids as main characters.

I love animation hence I love Japanese animation (Unless it's Haruhi Suzumiya, I hate that *****).

Honestly, some of my favourite anime shows are the ones I grew up with, when I was too young to realize they where from Japan in the first place.

I'm currently watching old Wizard of Oz episodes.

Honestly, what's not to like about this picture!?

I just dont like new anime. The rise of the whiney hero archetype drove me away and there's too much focus on younger characters. Give me characters like Ken, Fist of the North Star or Golgo 13.

People also tend to generalize all anime as being the same. So they see something like DragonBall or Sailor Moon and think that they can apply their opinion to all anime. Then take the fact that most anime dubs are pretty terrible and that most people who don't watch anime (or foreign films) habitually are not very likely to seek out a sub instead.

This is sort of a problem when the genre "anime" really refers to the fact that is Animated and from Japan (or at least done in a Japanese animation/art style).

Take, say, Gurren Lagann and Grave of the Fireflies. Both fall under the category: anime.

...

The only thing binding these works together in a genre is their place of origin and the fact that they are animated.

Both are really good, don't get me wrong. But they heartily disprove the conception that all anime is pretty much the same (without going into opinions of lack of quality is certain works).

People tend not to like anime because they either haven't seen a good dub (which is hard since you have to look for those outside of the TV scheduale (usually)) or they see the hardcore otaku crowd and want nothing to do with it or think we're all devil worshiping sadists.

For the record i love it <3
