Just because there's no authority figure telling you not to be a dick doesn't mean you should be a dick, they may have a right to be in the university but they certainly don't deserve it.

Furthermore you would never call a guy who exclusively watches Bay films a movie buff, so "Proper gamer" is a perfectly acceptable term. If a person contributes to adding precisely nothing to a medium, then they don't deserve titles associated with it.

Guys, what I meant with Facebook and Modern Warfare, is that its the 'only' game they seem to play.

For me its like going to a Chinese Restaurant, and only eat prawn crackers! There are so many things to try out, but no, they have to be 'popular' so they only play these things. Also, these guys tend to mock you for not playing it or not liking it, again calling you a 'lifeless' nerd.

Also, I am a straight PC gamer, a kind that seems to slowly die off nowadays...
I understand your point but you ARE kind of being an ass and the fact that you are a pure PC gamer is not really helping get rid of the "elitest PC gamer" stereotype. In all honesty they have a perfect right to be there. Some of them may realise that there is more to game making then they normally see. Others will just fail.
If your teacher is a good teacher they will be able to recognize the truly inspired people from the sheep and give you guys more freedom and attention.

Hmmm, this is useful actually. I guess I had a thought over all of this, and I am taking back everything about the 'True Gamer' since I watch Extra Punctuation and you guys just reminded me of that. The speaker of the show would not be proud of me...

Also, you guys are right. I will just ignore the chavs, group along with other like-minded fellows and stay quiet.

I still won't take shit from though, all of that will be reported asap and consequences will be drawn. I will be doing this not basis of the 'True gamer' but on the basis of 'I don't take shit from anyone' and won't let anyone bully me.

And yeah, as someone here said, they will probably drop out or something (Not wishing though) so I will just work hard.

Thanks guys :)

Edit : I forgot to tell you guys that College in UK is not actually College (University). Its one step before that, and its also free.

EDIT 2 : This is going into the main post.

This explains everything.
So just because they like call of duty they aren't allowed near one of your precious pcs? Are you scared they will taint your obscure hipster games?

Proper gamer? Since when is there a definition of "a proper gamer" and who made that definition?
Of course you can argue back but you have no right to say that they don't belong there. They've been accepted so they have the same rights as you do.

If the university accepted them, then they have every right to be there.
I don't think the OP goes to a university- "college" is a form of higher education between high school and university in the UK. Students going to University spend two years at a 6th form college to get the grades for university- alternatively, some students take more vocational courses from college, like what the OP is doing.

It's fairly un-typical to get jerks in a college, my friends have had similar experiences. In university it's an entirely different story, you have to work hard to get the grades for university, something your avarage chav isn't cut-out for.

Wait, do you mean college (sixth form) or uni?

Your fault for choosing IT really. 'specially a vocational course. Go Computing/Computer Science one way, or Economics the other. They at least resemble a real subject.

My Computing course was primarily made up of people who spent the whole time slacking off (probably because the teacher sucked... okay, because the teacher sucked), but they were all nerds.

Most of the real chavs are filtered out by the fact that college is optional. Those that continue have earned their right to continue education simply by showing they have the drive to do so. If they're idiots then education is there to help them.

If the latter:

Your problem is that you consider yourself as belonging to an elite to which you quite evidently don't. If you were, these common ruffians would not have been capable of entering the same course as you. These people are your intellectual peers. Question their priorities, their hobbies, and their demeanour, but not their aptitude for the subject, for in that they have proven themselves your equal.

That probably came off as rude, but you questioned the right to a free education; fuck you.
Firstly, I was talking of the first, as in its Sixth Form.

Secondly, I really do hope that these will be willing to merely 'accept' the help, they have the right to Free education but sometimes these people just don't appreciate it. I would never take away the free education, since I grew up to actually have the priviledge of using it, I will probably never have the power to do so (I also hate politics xD) and it wouldnt be fair for other people too. I just would like these guys to appreciate the chance they were given and respect their fellow class-mates!

LAST NOTE : For all people that play only Modern Warfare type games, Facebook games and dare to call themselves a 'proper gamer'. News flash, you're not!
See this?

This is the reason I'm going to ignore your entire post.
What if I gave you free internet cake and a massive 'take back' on that one statement?

Well as somebody who has gone past college level Computer Science in the UK I know exactly the type of people who are talking about. They are likely going to scrape through the two years just barely and look pretty stupid. Disrupt the class and make you feel like they are wasting your time.
The "good" news is UK computer science courses are pretty shit anyway so your probably not missing much. A lot of the teaching staff don't know much more than databases and you will learn alot more by looking things up in your own time. Learn the words they want you to regurgitate in the exam and work hard to complete all the coursework and you can get yourself an A(They do A*s now too don't they?) easy.
Quite alot of university level Computer Science courses don't require you to do college level CS so take this as an opportunity to really get ahead of your future peers by really getting to grips with programming. I can tell you it really helps.
As far as those guys appearing at university level there are alot less of them and are easy to distance yourself from. Probably dropping out after the first year too.
So my overall advice is to grit your teeth through their stupidity and make the most of your time in those lessons after you have done the assigned work. Maybe you will get lucky and they drop the course after the first year.

What if I carried around a SEGA Nomad with me and that was my only way of playing games?
Would you call me out for that?
That would be so awesome! I want to do that, but everybody would call me a hipster, who cares, I have Gunstar Heroes ready, now I just need a Nomad...

Oh yeah, the topic, um, douchebags are just that, don't worry about them...

There is the issue of having to carry around so many batteries...
It'd be easier to get a Dingoo (portable emulation device)
Not that I'm supporting that, mind you...

Yes, pedantic. That's what I would be if I were nitpicking, which I was not.

You completely right off a segment of your class as 'chavs' before even getting to know them, and then proceed to right off people who play games you don't like as non-gamers.

Not exactly pedantic is it.
Hey! Give OP a chance, he did said that it was his first day at the univ, so he is entitled to be elitist :D

I remember my bottom being tight and closed as republicans to rise taxes; now its much more open... wow, that sounded way better in my thoughts :p

Nerd rage, much? [http://www.comedycentral.com/videos/index.jhtml?title=brian-posehn-nerd-rage&videoId=75737]

Yes I read the update, but this is the first thing that came to mind while i was reading your little "tirade". Hope it works out for the best. Also:

Brahs? Jokeys? What?

Chill man. If they don't know what they're doing, they won't be there long. Or they'll fail for not taking it seriously. The ones that do get it, you shouldn't be acting like a jerk to them just because they're not like you. C'mon man, don't tell me you've never been on the receiving end of that.

I was gonna say something along the lines that you were being a little to judgmental... but someone beat me to it and you seem to have updated your opinion as well as your post. Which is really cool.

But this thing reminded my a lot of my own situation. I just started studying psychology at a university level and my classes are the largest in the history of the nation. Not just in psychology but in any field at any school at university level. Every lecture I attend has over 300 people. And despite the passing grade being a 5 somewhere around 70% of the class fails each year. So I really can't help but feel that sometimes people that "should" not be here are getting in the way of the rest off us.

Had similar issues in both College and University at the start, experience has taught me that the poorly motivated and generally stupid people tend to get left behind as you move into more advanced classes. You're probably going to have to deal with them through College but they will start to drop like flies in Uni.

To everyone saying the OP is an elitist... Whats wrong with a little elitism now and again. I'm all for people getting an education and yes I think it should be free but the people there actually have to deserve it/work for it and more importantly actually want to be there. Most of the mouthbreathers I've met in school were only there because they had been pushed there by a parent, not because they actually had any intellectual curiosity or motivation to advance themselves.
